Cincinnati Reds interested in Garrett Atkins

Troy Renck of the Denver Post is reporting that the Reds are talking to the Rockies about Garrett Atkins.

Atkins has clearly floundered with the Rockies this season, and may bring back relief help for the Rockies' ragtag bullpen.

A potential target coming back for the Rockies would be Nick Masset, and acquiring him would likely force the Rockies to eat some of Atkins' $3.4M remaining contract. David Weathers may also be a match.

Boston's interest in Atkins as an insurance policy for Mike Lowell is waning, Renck reports, as the Rockies would demand someone of the caliber of Manny Delcarmen in return.

The Seattle Mariners and St. Louis Cardinals may remain a match for Atkins as well, with Renck suggesting Miguel Batista as a salary match for Colorado.

Miguel Batista is somewhat terrible, however, and I do not see how assuming his salary would help the club with anything.

Props to wolf213 for catching this before I did. Like minutes before, seriously.

--UPDATE--

John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Rockies called the Reds to see if they were interested.

They were not.

Delcarmen--is that Renck or the Rockies?

Either way, they might as well ask for a pony while they’re at it.

Masset is much more interesting, even if the Rockies kick in money for Atkins salary

He appears to be a groundballer, right up the Rockies’ alley, and with a good K rate to boot.

Will Masset fall short of a super-2? That would make him even more interesting, even if he’s not as good as his 2009 numbers, as he’d have value moving forward.

Masset please

Atkins for Masset…. Hell yeah! I’m assuming we’d be eating the entire salary or adding a very good prospect. If Atkins is moved for much needed relief pitching, it kind of makes you wonder if our interest in Sanchez is as a 3B? Very interesting rumors.

We've got to be prepared to eat part/most of GA's salary. Atkins for Masset would be an enticing deal for us.

Please DOD get it done.

Prospect

I’m really thinking a prospect goes to Cincy as well.

So we throw in $2m and a middling prospect

Like $2m and Chaz Roe, or something, definitely not a top prospect, or we eat nothing. And then spend the rest of Atkins’ $$$ towards future extensions or on maybe another quality BP arm.

Yes

but look at it the other way…the Rockies are already eating Atkins salary for this year as he rides the pine, and pinch hits……With a trade we get at least something the Rockies need out Atkins salary, and that is a reliever.

No argument here!

Just saying I think it’ll take a prospect as well (why else would Cincy be interested really) to get it done. I’m all for it if that is what it takes and depending of course upon the prospect.

Masset 'recently' came off the DL with the dreaded oblique injury

and apparently has some stamina issues. But he looks like the kind of relief pitcher we need. Do we still bite?

David Weathers do not want.

We still bite

He’s young and cost-controllable enough, and clearly talented. If we don’t have to eat too many Outkinsbucks, it’s worth the shot.

Weathers and Batista are possibly worse than Kip Wells. Possibly.

As long as there was no shoulder/elbow issues, I say let's do it.

I have to say that 2009 has been the 'Year Of Renck' when it comes to Rockies reporting...

…he seems to have made some great in-roads & established some leads into the Rockies thinking this year. I may be wrong here, but his insider knowledge has significantly setpped-up from last year. With the closing of the RMN, he has become the forerunner of all things Rockies as Ringolsby seems to be scrounging for mortgage money with blogging, freelancing, and ill-suited TV broadcasting. Kreiger and the hot heads (i.e. Kiz & Paige) have barely taken notice of the team this year; likely too busy following the Cutler drama. Keep it up Troy!

by TulsaDriller on Jul 9, 2009 4:28 PM MDT reply actions

+100

I’d have added a zero but for the Ringolsby comment. I still think he’s gold, even if TV’s not his bag. the hotheads couldn’t carry Ringolsby’s jockstrap, much less his hat.

by Mondogarage on Jul 9, 2009 4:31 PM MDT up reply actions

LOL! That would be one hell of a huge jockstrap

I probably shoulda worded that differently – I’m actually a big fan of The Cowboy, but just find him a bit out of place on FSN. More than anything, I’m sad he’s not writing for the papers – the only reason I’d ever pick up a RMN is to read his articles. Definitely agree with IowaRockie that he’s a solid baseball man .

by TulsaDriller on Jul 9, 2009 4:44 PM MDT up reply actions

Agree on all counts

He is absolutely a real baseball man. Actually, I don’t mind him on TV at all, I just don’t think he’s particularly suited for it. But I’m a big Ringolsby fan.

Which reminds me, if we do the trade with the Reds (or even the Pirates), can we throw in Frazier?

They picked up w/ a suspended game, 10 – 10, in the bottom of the 11th vs. the Astros.

Josh Bard hit a perfect DP ball to end the inning, but “All Star” SS Miguel Tejada
threw the ball into the dugout to donate the game to the Nats.
