The Rockies went a long way toward solidifying the bridge to Huston Street by trading for Joe Beimel.

Beimel excited to join contender - The Denver Post
Newly-acquired Joe Beimel is set to join the Rockies in Cincinnati tonight. Beimel seems extremely excited to latch on to a contending team and start participating in meaningful games again. The article mentions that a corresponding roster move will be made today, with Juan Rincon being the likely victim.

Beimel could be key in Rockies' playoff effort - The Denver Post
In a very much related piece by Troy Renck, some Rockies players and staff commented on the Beimel acquisition. Players were gathered around laptops and/or constantly asking staff members for updates, so it's clear that they wanted the club to address a need, and feel they did just that. Here are some of the aforementioned quotes:

"He's going to help us," shortstop Troy Tulowitzki said. "He's hard to hit as a right-hander, so I can only imagine how tough he is on lefties."

"It gives us another veteran guy who has pitched in big games," closer Huston Street said. "And it frees up other guys to be used in different ways."
"He's a guy who can take the ball a lot and do the job," general manager Dan O'Dowd said. "He's got a pretty good track record."

In case you haven't checked, the Phillies beat the Giants last night, meaning the Rox are back to a tie for first in the NL Wildcard.

"The Bridge to Huston Street"

You totally did that on purpose, didn’t you, mister?

It feels super good to be a Rockies fan today. I think the Beimel trade was an awesome move. Both in terms of who we gave up and who we are getting.

So you photoshopped the picture to include a Rockies uni?

Good work. What I don’t understand about the DP article this morning is that he couldn’t get a flight until today. It sounds like he was in Pittsburgh. Maybe the deal wasn’t consumated until the deadline and by then he couldn’t get a flight in time to be in the dugout last night.

I’ve been out of touch much of this week. Who did we send down and take off the 40 man roster to make room for him?

I think this is a great move for our ’pen. Now we just need to get the bats working.

Saw that about the flight...also puzzled

and according to my Trip Planner, he could make the drive from Pittsburg to Cincy in 4 1/2 hours. Anything drive, less then 5 hours, and it’s easier to just drive it for me.

Beimel was not activated before the game.

Even if he had had time to join the organization, too much official business hadf to be completed before activating him. He will be activated today.

No 40 man roster move was necessary because Ryan Mattheus was involved in the trade. They simply switched places. On the 25 man roster, no move has yet been announced, but Juan Rincon seems likely to be designated for assignment.

Good win last night

Bats showed life late….but too many free walks went to waste, in need of an actual hit. I’m hoping the Reds pitching will help get some guys going.

And the Rockies won again, in a game where CarGo started. I think it’s just coincidence….but it’s getting to be hard to ignore, so I say he gets more starts, and spread some off days around that OF.

This time though

CarGo actually contributed offensively to the win. In fact, he contributed more than anyone else offensively. This one wasn’t a coincidence (though he did almost cause an error in right-center when he stole the ball from Hawpe).

Should CarGo be an everyday starter?

and if so where? LF or CF?

Personally I think CarGo will be better if challenged. He strikes me as a guy that will always do better if he’s having to look over his shoulder a little bit. But I’m seeing him break out of his earlier funk…while Fowler and Smith cool down. I think CarGo and Fowler will ultimately have higher production ceiling potential over Seth Smith as well (which isn’t a slam against Smith, who I think is solid player)

Also I had a random question/thought……just because Helton’s contract expires in 2011 would he want to come back for one more year (or 2 or 3?). He strikes me as a guy that’s not going to retire easily. Would he re-sign with Colorado? Would that affect what happens to Hawpe (which could affect what happens to CarGo)

On Helton

Realistically I’m not sure how many more years that back will hold up, but I sure hope he can keep this pace up and get to 3000 hits (I know that’s a stretch). I also hope he finds a way to stay with the Rockies the way Tony Gwynn stayed with the Padres. Towards the end I think they went year to year with contracts that were basically based off the last year’s production and very little haggling took place between Gwynn and the Padres. More than anything I just want to see Helton retire as a Rockie whether it’s as a full-time 1st baseman or a patient old bat off the bench. I’m pretty sure he’ll be able to foul off a dozen pitches and take a walk when he’s 65.

Helton's contract

According to Cots there’s a team option for 2012 (for $23 million) and more importantly, a hefty $4.6 M buyout.

Pretty hard to say if he’ll be any good by the time his age 38 season rolls around, but that’s a big buyout and I’d guess it will unfortunately complicate the picture a bit. They could renegotiate and incorporate it into an extension but then you’re either spending more, or banking on him granting a hometown discount (since he could let the team decline the option year and have the $4.6 in his pocket as he searches for other jobs). He might agree to a discount or incentive-laden extension, of course, he’s been here a long time. I guess it will all depend on how productive he is at that stage. It would be pretty sweet if things worked out.

Crazy, huh?

And what does that say about where teams thought salaries might have gone, with the annual amount going up to $19M and then the option at 23…

Who negotiated that deal for the Rockies? Gebhardt?

I really really like Todd but that contract was so massively in his favor that it’s beyond comprehension. I guess whoever put that deal together must have thought 19 mil was going to be a bargain.

It was signed in 2001

so the GM would have been DOD. The way he was hitting in 2000-2001 19 million was a bargain, but then he had back problems starting in 2005-2006. He should be good until his contract expires.

That is a classic photo of Beimel.

You will enjoy Beimel, Rockies fans. He seems like he has fun out there, and has a pretty good sense of humor. Plus he seemed to always have a knack for inducing comeback grounders, especially in clutch situations.

Last year in the playoffs, Beimel was sporting a Dodger robe, with looked just like the Dodger uniform, but was a robe. It was quite awesome.

Best Part of Beimel being a Rockie

is he won’t be pitching against the Rockies. He was one of those Rockies killers who’s number against us was better then it was against everyone else.

I’m hoping he likes Denver, and Rockies and will actually re-sign this off season, instead of the Rockies having to chase down the rotation of mediocre to crappy lefties that are out there every year.

What would you think of a man in a purple robe with his name on the back?

Its not just that it was a Dodger robe! :)

I am a fan of a player with a sense of humor making a uniform/robe, no matter the team. Well, OK, not the Giants (he would probably be nude under the robe anyway, being such a depraved person).

Good call

I think you misunderstood my question with the first part of your answer. Let me phrase it this way:

Supposing you had a male friend, and said male friend had a purple robe with his name on the back, not supporting a team or organization, just a purple robe. Would this diminish his manhood in your eyes? I’m trying to gauge outside reactions, just so I’m prepared for what will be said if he does go for the same look here.

Spot on with the SF assessment. I LOL’d when I read that.

Not a big robe guy in general…unless you have a Playmate on each arm or something like that. Even then, though, its kind of creepy.

In context, however, the uniform robe is awesome. Wear it in the clubhouse, or during celebrations, etc. I don’t know if I personally would wear one to a game, but maybe around the house.

Today's a good Rockies day.

It’s a good day to be in the hunt, in the chase, in the mood. Good day to have traded for two quality relievers and not emptied the farm. Good day to win the Reds series. Good Rockies day today.
