Troy Tulowitzki hits for the cycle in victory over Cubs

Tulo! Tulo! Tulo! Two-run homer in the first, two-run single in the second (after hitting a long ball that went to replay and confirmed the ump's call of a foul ball), an RBI double in the fourth, a leadoff triple in the seventh, and a two-run single in the bottom of the eighth. Yep, that's a cycle and more for Troy Tulowitzki--the first by a Rockie since Mike Lansing did it on 18 June 2000. And he's only the second player to hit for the cycle and record an unassisted triple play in his career. The other is John Valentin. (Note: There were two George Burns who played around the same time, each doing half of this feat, which lead to a mix-up.)

His first home run was an absolute bomb and the ball that was called foul was also a monster shot. Man, I love Troy Tulowitzki.

And let's not forget about Jorge De La Rosa, or as we should correctly call him, Jorge K La Rosa. He struck out 11 in this game, his second highest this season after having struck out 12 Marlins back in May.

Dexter Fowler made an amazing catch in the top of the ninth, but he slammed into the outfield war. He was able to get up and walk off the field on his own.

With the win the Rockies took three of four from the Cubs.

Happy days!

cubbies are awful

but the cubbies are supposed to be good.

the nats would probably pound them right now..

I want to do a long post but

the Cubs are. Fundementally…they are not good. Besides Derrick Lee….they don’t have anyone that seems to be hitting…..their pitching isn’t great (I know they have had injuries)…and their Defense is terrible.

Really i have no idea, how they have the record that they do after watching this 4 game series.

This Rockies team is special….the good kind

by Redhawk on Aug 10, 2009 10:23 PM MDT up reply actions

long post on the cubbies

would be a waste – you summed it up nicely in one word – fundamentals – they have none.

derrick lee – yes. soto and ramirez – yes, but they’ve been hurt..

by RockyMtnCat on Aug 11, 2009 8:20 AM MDT up reply actions

this is just the way to look at it

That they really do lack the fundamentals.

Rockies fans will forgive a double because the relay from CF to SS to 2B will be sharply executed, and the play might even be close. Tulo’s double – and triple – were both made possible thanks to terrible, terrible relay throws, and viewers like you.

Chacin starting

Tracy answered a question about the choice by saying if both he and Fogg were to get knocked around, he’d rather have Chacin in there first b/c he thinks Fogg would handle the “taking one for the pen” better.

The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.

before you hang your hat on that too much

We still haven’t figured out what kind of player Tulo is… is he a high average-good runner who bats 2nd like we were hoping in 2008? Is he a lower average, high discipline, high slugging crusher like he looks right now?

He’s on pace for 25-30 dingers, 35-40 XBH (not counting dingers), 20 steals….I don’t know what to make of this guy anymore, slugger or slapper!

Point is he’s pretty awesome, and the advanced numbers confirm this.

Chacin, Street, and DLR

First off, Tracy said about 75 pitches tommorow for Chacin. That gives him a chance of getting 5 innings if he keeps it at 15 pitches an inning. The key is to have Fogg and Chacin together get us through 6 and hand off to the bullpen wiht a chance to still win.

Don’t worry about Street. He was rusty and in a low-intensity situation. He got dinged around but as we said by others, ever closer has these from time to time adn to have it out of his system when it could not hurt us while not good is nothing to panic about.

DLR continues to show that the head and gifts are coming together. He was not great tonight but he still kept the Cubs to 1 run over 7.2. We now have 3 10 game winners with Ubaldo having a chance to join the club on Wednesday.

Our rotation is a bit banged up, Hammel is struggling, but we are in as good as shape as the Dogers and after 1 and 2, we can match up well with the Giants. Going to be a touch next three weeks, between road trips and games with teh Dodgers and Giants, but it all starts with Chacin showing the team he is ready to be an asset in 2009 and part of the core in 2010.

by Doctor Christopher on Aug 10, 2009 11:16 PM MDT reply actions

I dunno man

DLR handled traffic really well, he struck out 10 and only walked 4. And only gave up 1 run. So yeah, I guess not his BESSSSST outing but this was a pretty awesome way to close out a series. Oh, and he did it in Coors.

I thought he struck out 11 (if you want to be super picky.)

What is so great about our starting pitching this year is the ability to limit damage. Ubaldo still walks a lot, and Marquis and Cook both get some traffic. It’s cool to finally see JDLR among the ranks of pitchers not allowing these runs to score. Really cool, actually.

by realmenwearpurple on Aug 11, 2009 9:22 AM MDT up reply actions

and I won't argue with your stance on it

Because there still isn’t a definitive right-or-wrong on it. I find Gonzalez to be more mechanical and efficient, he looks more like a fielding machine, while Dex lopes to balls – and still gets them – and he just seems like he could be doing so much more or something along those lines.

I’m not standing too firmly on this opinion, mind you. It’s nothing more than an untrained eye test.

I remember hearing that mentioned before

That coaches would get on Dex because they thought he was being lazy getting to balls. But he was really just so quick and smooth, that it doesn’t look like he’s trying hard.

by ShadowPenguin on Aug 11, 2009 10:16 AM MDT up reply actions

To put it in football terms..

Dex has closing speed, like a defensive back making up ground on a deep pass. Dex can get to balls in the corners of Coors Field where it looks like extra base hell for the batter.

CarGo is a glider, where it looks like he’s barely moving and then out of nowhere gets to the ball. Both players are wall crashers with good arms. It’s hard to say one player is better than the other, the best solution is to have both of them in the outfield and CarGo’s arm belongs in a corner position.
