Pirates 7, Rockies 3: Walks + Errors = Losses, even against the Bucs
Well, chalk this one up to "just one of those games." It was probably evident in the first inning, when the Pirates scored a questionable run on a wild pitch.
Jhoulys Chacin lasted just 2.2 innings and despite only allowing one hit, gave up four runs as a result of issuing six free passes in his first career MLB start. That, combined with the Rockies catching some tough breaks offensively and failing to execute defensively (three errors), resulted in a rough loss to the Pirates, who came into this game losers of 8 straight.
Josh Fogg pitched 4.2 innings of pretty effective long relief, as he allowed two runs on six hits (and three more walks) and struck out four. At the very least, he gave the Rockies' offense a chance to get back into it, but they were ultimately unable to do so. At a couple of points the Rox cut four run deficits to three runs, but that's as close as they would get. Fogg allowed a run after the lead was cut to 5-2, then Joe Beimel, who allowed a run on three hits in an inning pitched, allowed a run after the Rockies made it 6-3. For what it's worth, Matt Daley came in and pitched a scoreless ninth, while notching two strikeouts.
Seth Smith, Todd Helton, and Chris Iannetta each had two hits in the ballgame. Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez each went yard, but none of it was enough to overcome all of the issues the Rockies had in this one.
Check out the graph, RowCall, and tomorrow's starters after the jump.

GO ROCKIES!

Sometimes you get the bear...
and sometimes your stud rook gets lit up by a crappy team. I was very upset that I forgot to tivo this one, now I don’t feel so bad.
Gotta come to play if you expect to win. Tons of walks are always a recipe for disaster at Coors, worse when you add poor defense. Shake it off, back at it tomorrow.
our stud rook did not get lit io

*up
The casper ghosts could have probably managed one hit off him and beaten him tonight. Its hard to lose when the starter walks a third of the batters he faces

Odd plays worth mentioning
1) The 1st Pirates run:
With a runner on 3rd, Delwyn Young swung at a pitch and missed, and it hit him in the leg. The runner broke from 3rd, Iannetta was late to react, and the runner scored.
Runners are not allowed to advance on such a play according to rules folks dug up in thread. In the post-game interview, Tracy said the ump said the batter swung (and did not foul the pitch), but “did not mention” the ball hitting the batter. Not sure why Tracy didn’t press the ump on the runner advancing.
2) Ball stuck in Helton’s webbing
With a runner on 3rd, Helton caught a foul ball just inside the stands. After pulling the ball back, he started running the ball back to the field, which seemed odd. Turned out the ball was stuck in the webbing of his mitt.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
Apparently that first run shouldn't have been one
they showed the rulebook in the postgame report that says it should’ve been a dead ball. Not that we would of game, but it would’ve affected the dismal tone from the outset. And I hate when umpires screw up and this one’s due to incompetence, not poor judgment
CarGon's HR
It’s also worth mentioning it was a frozen rope. He smoked it on a line to RF, just left of the scoreboard.

Oh well. First MLB career start for Chacin.
Besides, both Giants and Cubs lost, so the Wild Card standings are not looking much different. Hope for a Giants and Rockies win tomorrow to put LA down a bit.
We better not sleep on the Marlins...
Those fish are up to something. With them playing in a weaker division, it’s conceivable that they could catch us pretty easily.

Thanks for the explanation...
I was at the game and, of course, there was no explanation on the message board. It’s galled me for years that people who pay good money to attend a game NEVER get told anything about injuries, controversial rulings like this one, why a player leaves a game, etc nor are fans at the game shown most replays. But sit at home and watch on TV and you get countless replays and explanations.
So I still haven’t seen great catch Milledge made on Gonzalez or Carlos might have had two homers and the game would have been a lot closer. In all, just a really bad performance and Rockiers got no breaks, either. Fortunately this kind of effort has been very rare under Tracy.
face it rockies fans, we have been spoiled
Since morales went down in the season’s second week, we only used five starting pitchers. I would be surprised if another team can make that claim. Every team has to deal with a subpar replacement at some point, whether it is a supremely inferior talent or a debut. Nervous debuts happen to 21 year old pitchers. While chacin will be better than hammel soon, we have just been lucky we haven’t had to go outside our starting five until now

Went to the game.
I am with Moose. They don’t show replays except watching the guy run to first base. That drives me nuts. It was just one of those game. Chacin looked nervous and I watched him warm up and still didn’t hit his spot then. Then the fans… A very late coming crowd that got into it in the 7th but after that half the crowd left. I stayed of course. Also soooo many people that don’t know what they are talking about. They were saying Chacin was a 32 vet we picked up on waivers!!! That one got me. Hopefully a bounce back game tomorrow. Maybe this time they will be ready to play.
ignorance happens
Though I don’t understand why people confidently say something when they obviously have no clue. No one even fits that description, except maybe mike timlin, who could only wish he were 32. Still not the worst gaffe. Someone this may wanted to know who this Fowler guy was and why we weren’t starting willy taveras

Maybe they thought he was Gustavo Chacin.

Yeah, but try telling that to people who don't even know that Willy Taveras isn't on the team anymore.

Ergh
As long as we win the next two, it’s okay. At least the Giants and Cubs had the decency to lose too.
I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.
Look on the bright side
Friedrich pitched awesome again…8 k’s 1 ER 4 Hits in 6 2/3

Out of curiosity
How does Tulowitzki get a triple on Monday, but Millidge gets a double last night?
