Jhoulys Chacin demoted, Adam Eaton called up

Jhoulys Chacin was sent down to the Springs and Adam Eaton was called up. Alan Embree was placed on the 60-day DL to make room for Eaton on the 40-man roster.

Hat tip to FooMan for his FanShot on this.

Oh that's not good...

Cook’s okay, right? I mean, this feels like something’s wrong with Cookie, because outside of this I’m confused.

It does seem an odd choice, unless they're concerned about starting pitching health

as many teams don’t carry a long man at all. So perhaps they are worried about Cook and perhaps Marquis. Otherwise, you’d think Herges would be a better choice.

Good point on Herges

I’m am a bit worried about Cookie.

by IowaRockie on Aug 12, 2009 5:52 PM MDT up reply actions

They could still call up Herges

if Cookie ends up on the DL. Fogg can move into the starting rotation if need be.

by SDcat09 on Aug 12, 2009 5:53 PM MDT up reply actions

I think it's strictly long-man related

Especially with Fogg basically down for rest as well. With no one to take bullets in the event of an implosion, Eaton can spare Morales and Daley from the three inning outing.

by David OhNo on Aug 12, 2009 5:54 PM MDT via mobile up reply actions

I'm okay with this...

According to the DP, they needed another BP arm through the next few days, because of Chacin having pitched several innings and Fogg as well. I’m willing to wait and see before judging.

by SDcat09 on Aug 12, 2009 5:32 PM MDT reply actions

I'm not.

I want no part ever for infinity of Adam Eaton.

Well, like I said..you never know...

Oakland thought Street was done, Marquis has had a bit of a resurrection here. Maybe Eaton will turn out okay.

by SDcat09 on Aug 12, 2009 5:38 PM MDT up reply actions

The difference

Marquis was a league avg starter, and I’m not sure Oakland though Street was done so much as replaceable/worth trading, which is how Beane has treated closers for a while.

Whereas Adam Eaton aspires to go crazy and reach league average performance.

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

by FooMan on Aug 12, 2009 5:42 PM MDT up reply actions

Watch your analogies

Street-Eaton is nowhere close.

I’d be surprised if Eaton ever pitches or Chacin ever takes that bus ride. He’s a 3 day emergency long reliever.

by David OhNo on Aug 12, 2009 5:46 PM MDT via mobile up reply actions

The point I was trying to make

was that some pitchers that other teams have thought were either expendable or not as valuable to their team, have worked out for us this season. I was not trying to say that Eaton was as a good as Street by any means. Hope that clarifies..:)

by SDcat09 on Aug 12, 2009 5:49 PM MDT up reply actions

Chacin might as well report and pitch

If optioned, you have to stay down 10 days unless recalled for an injured player at the same position, right?

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

by FooMan on Aug 12, 2009 5:50 PM MDT up reply actions

Breath in deep, breath out slowly....

It’s going to be okay. This is why we have a guy like Eaton staying around. He’s not real good, but apparently we need his services. I’m guessing that perhaps Cookie is a bit more questionable than we thought, and the temporary bullpen arm makes sense as well. It is a shame to see Chacin have to go down though. We were all pretty excited about him getting that first start, but in hindsight (and I don’t recall anybody having foresight on this one) I sure do wish he’d have stayed in the pen while he adjusted to the majors.

Cook gets the weirdest damn injuries

And chacin was performing quite well from the pen. I was apprehensive about starting him, pirates or no.

I called for a Fogg start on Tuesday

…and I know a few others did as well. They had very little to gain. Not a great time for an experiment.

We're not gonna get much better times to experiment with him though.

I respect the move; just to get the kid a taste of the bigs. Unfortunately, walks a defense were huge letdowns so it didn’t work out. I doubt he’ll be making another start this season.

Makes sense to me.

If they needed a long relief guy for a few days, Eaton seems like a good option.

Since I got a lovely warning, I’ll censor myself.

Adam Eaton is (redacted).

If you look at the context of the move, it's a good one

Chacin is being moved down to get regular rotation time in the minors, and Fogg is unavailable for a good 3 days because he threw a lot yesterday. We are still unsure of Cook’s position in the rotation with that toe injury. (he’s still slated to start Saturday, but anything can happen with injuries). He’s not playing a gigantic role on this team, he’s going to get mop-up duty just like Chacin or long reliever duty like Fogg. It’s not like we’re bringing him up and expecting him to take over the 8th inning role: our bullpen has become too good for that. Now would you rather screw with our prospects like Rogers, Hynick, or Chacin (I liked the idea of getting his feet wet, but not for too long) and put them in a worthless relief role, or have a replacement level pitcher like Eaton take over a worthless role in the BP and let the the major league ready prospects stay on their normal schedule in the minors and get their feet wet in the majors with a September callup? We still have Herges available just in case he screws up anyways.

by bballrox4717 on Aug 12, 2009 7:55 PM MDT reply actions

The move makes sense on one level

I just wonder how Chacin will take it. His first major league start, he totally sucked and then got sent down the next day. Kind of a bummer.

I watched the video of his start. It seemed like a lot of his ball fours were in the same spot -up and in to righties. I feel like that’s better than him just being all over the place.

Was he wild in a controlled way or was he just a loose cannon out there?

The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.

by Resolution on Aug 12, 2009 9:47 PM MDT reply actions

This has nothing to do with Cook

They won’t know his status until he pitches a session later today. It’s just a short-term solution for not having Chacin and Fogg available. If we’re lucky he goes on the shelf like Fogg did last month. Chacin will get stretched out at Colorado Springs and be back to raise hell in September. And I’m sure his ego is fine, because Tracy does a good job of explaining his moves to players. +1 on taking a deep breath.
