thoughts on Sept Callups?
I was thinking today of who the rockies might callup when rosters get expanded. I feel EYJ is a given along with Matt Murton, but really who else. Maybe Matt Miller, Mike McCoy. Esmil Rogers is a possibility along with Chacin being called back up again. But all these guys are at Colorado Springs. could there be some Double A prospects called up too. Strange thought but maybe just maybe rocks have playoff spot rapped up and they bring up Friedrich for a start? just a thought
Eat. Drink. Be Merry. But the above FanPost does not necessarily reflect the attitudes, opinions, or views of Purple Row's staff (unless, of course, it's written by the staff [and even then, it still might not]).

McCoy and MIller are not on the 40-man
so they’re not likely to come up. And given that the team will probably be in the thick of it for all September, are probably not needed anyway if Murton and EY2 are up (which seems likely).

Some guys to think about
Deduno, Chacin, and Lindsay can also be called up. I also would love to see looks taken upon Hynick, McHenry, Holcomb, and Matt Reynolds. We have space to put them on the 40 man due to season ending injuries to some of our players/propsects on the 40 man roster.

Who would you bump?
Corpas and Rincon are the only ones on the 40-man who could be bumped to the 60-man, and I think Corpas is trying to make it back for September. I don’t know if someone like Reynolds can be put on the 60-man.
If the wild card race is still close, I don’t see much time for Deduno, Lindsay, Hynick et al., much less the need to make roster moves for those who need it.

Hynick will need at least one start this year, and we know it
He should competing for a rotation spot next year, he’s earned it, and needs to get a feel for the majors. We can afford to give him one of Hammel’s starts or something like that. Deduno should be a BP arm this Sept., and we can always outright Bellorin for McHenry.
Wildcard or not, we still build the team from the farm, and the propsects IMO have earned some playing time when the rosters expand.

Agreed that we still build from the farm, but...
Hynick does not get a start if we’re still in a dogfight (e.g. three games up or three games back).
Also, I dunno if Hynick is on the 40 man or not, but if he isn’t, the Rockies are not making a move to add him to the 40 man roster, because that would start his options clock at the end of the season, if I’m not mistaken.
He deserves a start, but not at the expense of unnecessary roster moves combined with the heat of a playoff race. If he were on the 40 man already, that would increase the chance he gets called, but teams right in the middle of a real race aren’t going to give spot games to 1st time callups just to give them a taste. They’re more likely to get called up and sit on the bench to get a taste of MLB life, but not see game action.
Now, if we’re six games up in the WC by September 1st, that can certainly change things.

I think we all can make a case to
rid Flores and Rincon off the 40 man roster.
Since Reynolds, Nelson, and Smith are injured, could we put them on the 60 day DL to open up a spot on the 40 man roster? I don’t know considering they aren’t on an active roster right now, but that could change in September.

EY2, Murton, and Chacin if he hasn't been called up again by then are all very likely.
Juan Rincon will also probably be coming back from injury during that time.

I wouldn't doubt we see Rincon
Flores, Peralta, etc, just because they are MLB pitchers (albeit terrible ones) and you can use them just for mopup duty.

Only non 40-man possibility would be McKenry
Reasons:
1) The Rockies don’t need to reward anyone with a start, etc. Just because Hynick may compete for the rotation next year doesn’t mean he’s deserved anything this year. As has been stated, the Rockies must first be concerned about their playoff race, so that should rule out any reward outings or “look-see’s.”
2) McKenry plays a position of “weakness.” We all know what Iannetta is capable of when he’s right at the plate, but this slump is growing longer and isn’t trending very well either. Iannetta’s managed only one walk coming into today this month, while K’ing almost a quarter of the time in his plate appearances. Teams may be challenging him more and he’s not pulling through. As Ron Shandler would say, if a player has exhibited a skill at soome point in his career, he’s capable of repeating it, and obviously, Iannetta could be a top five catcher. Let me cut myself off here on Iannetta and save more for later down. Obviously, we know Torrealba’s skill set, it hasn’t changed since he’s been here, so moving on…
3) McKenry is timing his hot streak nicely. Michael’s August line of .364/.462/.515 is still climbing, and these numbers mark his best month to date this year.
4) McKenry also brings a unique skill to the table. In his case, it has been erasing base runners. Michael’s numbers are down from last year, but at 34% CS, he’s a plus, and watching him play, the tools are there to be a plus defensive catcher. Iannetta’s no slouch at 26%, which is up slightly from his career numbers, but from a physical standpoint, McKenry’s arm is stronger, and his overall defensive game is pretty mature.
5) McKenry is ready. .931/.827/.831 Those are McKenry’s OPS numbers from all three of his seasons in full season ball. He’s essentially been the same player at every level (especially when you adjust for park and age level at Low A.) McKenry’s not making major strides, he’s simply holding serve at each level, which is itself is a positive step and signifies his polish as a prospect.
So what does this suggest? I would think McKenry could provide Iannetta insurance. The Rockies have to be concerned at this point with Iannetta. August has been almost no better than July, and at some point, bad luck gives way to mechanical flaws. Iannetta wouldn’t be the first player to underperform his statistical expectations. While Zips still potentially sees a .257/.361/.485 line the rest of the way, Iannetta’s showing little to suggest a turnaround of even that measure.
Can McKenry replace him? Probably not. His peak translation for his AA numbers (according to BP) suggest he could be a .239/.315/.416 hitter. I use his peak numbers because they suggest a reasonable line given his talents; that would make him marginally better than current Iannetta, but worse than Zips Iannetta. Add in the usual caveats of rookies cutting their teeth…
The point of calling up McKenry would be two-fold. He would add one more talent to a position of need, and he’s a chance to catch lighting in a bottle. What happens if Iannetta continues to struggle and McKenry, as he’s done at every level, maintains an above .800 OPS level of play? McKenry can keep the team afloat and possibly give them multiple options to balance out a playoff roster. I would like to see him up before 9-1, as to give them the option of keeping him on the playoff roster if he excels. Perhaps the team can carry three catchers for the last game or two August, just to give them the option.

I would agree with this
Most teams usually have a 3rd Catcher. Bellorin is the only catcher on the 40 man currently, but McKenry has a greater upside, and will need to be added to the 40 man after the season to protect from rule 5 draft (I think)

Other Rule 5 Potentials
Who else will need to be protected against being drafted this winter?

Pitchers
I kind of scratch my head with everyone’s love affair with Lindsey. He’s pitched 12 innings this year, and has spent more time in single A than anyone in minor league history I think. Maybe he still has potential, but I don’t see rationale for a call up. Let him prove himself for an entire season. I wish Rogers well, but wonder if he’s ready mentally.

I don't understand it either
But in his playing time, his strikeout rates have been astronomical.

Lindsey
is only at single-a now because he’s rehabbing.
He’s an enigma because he’s very talented, but he can’t seem to stay healthy. Obviously this doesn’t bode well for the future, but if he somehow stays healthy, he has a tremendous arm. With a guy like that you, you give him a lot of opportunities. You don’t want to be the team that discarded a very usable arm for no real reason.

Lindsay is now back at Tulsa
He pitched there a couple nights ago and looked fine.
