Rockies continue dominance over NL Central, beat Pirates 10-1
Let's just take a look at some of the numbers today: 7 for 9 with runners in scoring position. Eight extra base hits (including three doubles by lead-off hitter Dexter Fowler and home runs by Troy Tulowitzki and Clint Barmes) and fifteen hits overall, the Rockie just put an old fashioned Coors Field beat down on Pirates starter Paul Maholm, and lit up Matt Capps for good measure. Keep in mind that these are supposed to be the Pirates good pitchers.
Meanwhile, Rockies starter Jason Marquis wasn't always pretty, but thanks to some quality defensive work (particularly in left field by Carlos Gonzalez) he was effective and got through seven innings allowing just the one run to pick up his thirteenth win. The team improves to 64-51 overall, just five games behind the Dodgers for first place in the NL West. The Rockies have gained four games on Los Angeles in the last three weeks after being nine back on July 24th.
While they haven't been perfect while at Coors, make no mistake that the Rockies are getting on a serious roll. The Rockies went 5-2 over the seven game homestand, outscoring the Cubs and Pirates by a combined score of 54-26. A win is a win, but when teams that aren't really playing each other that often are nonetheless competing for the same playoff spots, blowout wins like today's for the Rockies help show that the team is more likely to continue winning in the future.
The team's 23-12 record in games decided by six runs or more is a big reason that Baseball Prospectus' playoff odds are generally a couple percentage points more favorable to the Rockies compared to other sites that just consider the win percentage and the remaining schedule. At the same time, it's why the Braves are considered such a dangerous threat coming up on our tail. The good news with that situation is that the Rockies are in a position since the Braves are playing the Phillies this weekend,

And now another East Coast trip...
Let’s get ’em! Knock the fish out of the running!
And…wow, glad Dex is back unhurt – bigtime!
Jason Marquis 2nd Half Collapse Watch
1st Half: 11-6, 3.65 ERA, 6.85 IP/GS, 2.91 BB/9, 4.2 SO/9, 0.66 HR/9
2nd Half: 2-2, 3.18 ERA, 6.8 IP/GS, 2.91 BB/9, 5.3 SO/9, 0.53 HR/9
Though as I noted in the game thread, he has tailed off with the bat in the 2nd half: .250 in the 1st vs. .100 in the 2nd. Maybe he should rub Barmes’s head before his next at-bat.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
marquis is notorious for pitching well to begin the season
And then collapse after the asb. I can’t copy them with my phone, but check his career splits. They are noteworthy. Our enthusiasm towards marquia’ all star first half was always tempered by that fact. Foo man is showing we might not have to worry…

Yup, and I am hoping the joke's not on me/us/the Rockies
His career splits:
1st half: 60-39, 4.16 ERA
2nd half: 31-39, 4.88 ERA
I think it was in one of the stories linked in a rockpile that some writer already tried to pull the collapse watch, cherry-picking out Marquis’s excellent 1st start after the break and writing something along the lines of “and in his 3 starts after that, he has a 4.74 ERA…” Of course, that’s 3.80 now.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
I guess I just take issue with the whole "watch" thing.
It seems like most “watches” in the media are predicated by “watchers” premise that the said “watch” (“watchee”) outcome is really a forgone conclusion. And the “watcher” is just waiting for “watchee” to fulfill the expectation.
It just seems kind of mean…like you believe he will “collapse” and are just waiting to pounce on that….
I apologize if it was meant as joke…I didn’t take it that way.
I’m just a little tired of all the Marquis bashing. I’ve he
i think youve taken it as having the wrong intentions
The watch here is in response to the “bashing” from cards fans, cubs fans and other media. The watch here has been a counterargument to the idea of a collapse, not a statement of inevitable failure. I actually don’t know of any marquis bashing here.

a lot of opposing fans from Chicago and St. Louis have written "just you wait" sort of posts
because of this. So far, we’ve had the last laugh.
Didn't you see all the threads before the break?
Where people worried about Marquis’s tendency to have 2nd half dropoffs?
So the “watch” is a bit of a joke in response.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

hm. allow me to rephrase
Many users tend to NOT read posts and articles and comments and then when somebody makes a crack about something like a Marquis 2nd half collapse watch, they’ve missed the inside joke and get into a huff. Sdcat09 didn’t happen to get into a huff, just went all mother-hen for a minute, but it’s not out of the lines of plausibility to see this happening with other posters.
It’s not so much “how dare you!” but more along the lines of “….you post all the time, how are you missing this joke?”

CarGon magic pixie dust
It’s still there. Team is now 30-6 in his starts.
By month:
June: 14-2
July 10-2
August 6-2
If the trend in the win pct. continues, he’ll be out of pixie dust by October.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
haha, you know, because August is over. :P

It's not going to be 15-5 or something at the end of the month?
Dang.

This stat
really is interesting. A few and it’s coincidence…..but now? It’s getting harder to write off as just pure coincidence.
His past many starts have definitely been legit
But I’m p sure it was just pixie dust before he actually started swinging.

Damn
if we had just had CarGo on the roster since day 1, we’d be looking at a 135 win season.
Oh well, there’s always next season.
The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.
Is it just me, or
does it look like the “bat boy” in the AP photo is wearing a Carlos Gonzales jersey and look like Carlos Gonzales?

Nope, it's the batboy

Yep, that's what I thought, too.
Just happens to have a last name that at least appears to start the same as CarGos.
Pretty sure it's the bay boy
The bat boy, Domagata, wears number 09…
by Two low rocks on Aug 13, 2009 8:34 PM MDT up reply actions
hmmm i believe the bay boy's number has always been the last two digits of the year
That’s going to start becoming problematic next season. So few players wear numbers in the 90s and no one does that starts with a zero. But a bat boy won’t be number 10 and he sure won’t be 11 if the number is still taken…
