Game #117: Aaron Cook vs. Rick VandenHurk
Colorado Rockies at Miami Marlins, Aug 15, 2009 4:10 PM MDT
Atlanta, San Francisco and Los Angeles all did the Rockies a favor by losing yesterday. Let's not leave it up to them today.
If Cook's toe is okay, we definitely have the pitching advantage here. If it's not, Josh Fogg will be the longman, as Adam Eaton will be unavailable.

If cookie pitches well tonight
i’ll feel a lot better.
I was convinced Marquis still had a blister problem, but his last outing was much better.
If both of them are OK, it will be a good thing.
Let's go ROCKIES!!!
Clap Clap Clap Clap Clap!
"What I speak out of my mouth is the truth. It burns like fire."
Grrrrr
Not looking good for DirecTV either. Game doesn’t look like it’s on the $150 baseball extra innings package or the $12 a month sports package I buy every year so that I can watch the Rockies here in Iowa. They do make it hard to be a baseball fan some days. I think I’ll watch an NFL game just to spite MLB. Grumble, grumble, grumble……
Dumb
Why couldn’t they blackout one of the pirates games. Oh well, at least the Radio will still have it.
If the Marlins had just pushed the start time back an hour, it wouldn't be blacked out.
I don’t understand why the home team doesn’t do that.
With a day game tomorrow, they want the game to be done earlier.
We do the same thing before day games.
by Greg Stanwood on Aug 15, 2009 3:59 PM MDT up reply actions
Yeah, but it's only one hour.
I guess they don’t care about people being able to actually see the game.
The MLB schedulers probably don't work together with the executives who sell TV deals.
by Greg Stanwood on Aug 15, 2009 4:05 PM MDT up reply actions
I've seen schedule changes happen before as a result of things that happen to change the game itself...
… so a rescheduling probably isn’t out of the question, but I just know from experience how little communication there is about these kinds of things. I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if the people in charge of those decisions pay absolutely no attention to the television schedules. That said, FSN or some other power might have the option of making them aware of this. Maybe the did, maybe they didn’t. Either way, I don’t feel comfortable saying that they would reschedule a game because of a television schedule. That could cause a lot of confusion.
by Greg Stanwood on Aug 15, 2009 4:15 PM MDT up reply actions
highly doubt
that teams have the ability to change around start times. otherwise, they could move games to 10 a.m. when a team comes in at 2 a.m. the night before.
by Narcoleptico on Aug 15, 2009 4:16 PM MDT up reply actions
Yeah, but that's entirely different than changing a time so that fans of both teams actually have the ability to watch the game.
I guess it just seems really stupid to me that any game would start an hour before the blackout ends. It’s not like this is a weekday game in April or something. It’s a Saturday game during the last couple months of a playoff race. I just don’t get why the teams or MLB would allow it to happen. But I freely acknowledge that I don’t know all that goes into the tv contracts or scheduling.
yea, but the problem is that it's a slippery slope
you start to let teams change around start times for one reason and it could get weird quickly. better to have rigid schedules, even if the occasional game gets blacked out as a result. anyways, i’m pretty sure FSN only pays for the rights to 150 games, so if this one wasn’t blacked out, another one would be.
by Narcoleptico on Aug 15, 2009 4:32 PM MDT up reply actions
If I'm reading the Rockies official website right, the game will be on MLB.tv now, because of the rain delay
And this is a general question.
I don’t get MLB.tv, so I’m sure it happens now and again when neither team is broadcasting the game. In those cases, what’s on MLB.tv?
MLB broadcasters?
Or one of the teams just sends someone random? I would assume the main announcers wouldn’t bother.
its still the main annoucers.. they get paid for 162 games + playoffs and theyre broadcasting everyone of them
lets go cookie
show em you can take a no-hitter into the 9th! :)
if you're reading this, it means my undying support for your team will result in its failure.
Crap
Giants just scored 3 runs off Santana and are up 3-1.
Cain also beaned David Wright. Yet another Mets injury…

Scary. Edgar Gonzalez is still out, I think
Looks like Rolen’s still out as well.

Blackout
Yeah, On Saturdays they blackout any game that starts between 4 and 7 eastern time. Something to do with Fox’s deal with MLB. I have no idea why it’s a 6pm start time. Games are almost always 7 or 730 starts.
by TheRockHead on Aug 15, 2009 3:58 PM MDT via mobile reply actions
the same reason saturday games start at 6 here
it’s a league wide thing. and yea, fox doesn’t allow any games to be shown at the same time as their broadcasts.
by Narcoleptico on Aug 15, 2009 4:00 PM MDT up reply actions
No
It’s not a league wide thing. Maybe it is common for teams in mountain or pacific time zones since those games don’t get affected by the Fox blackout, but it is not common otherwise. Just look at tonights schedule: this game is the only 6pm game and almost all of these teams have day games tomorrow.
by TheRockHead on Aug 15, 2009 4:39 PM MDT via mobile up reply actions
huh?
almost every game played tonight starts at 6 local time. are you sure you’re not looking at eastern time zone start times for teams in the central time zone?
by Narcoleptico on Aug 15, 2009 4:43 PM MDT up reply actions
Did you read?
I said it may be typical for those games in other time zones but not the east coast. Out of 4 east coast games, this is the only 6pm starts. Elsewhere 6pm makes sense since it is not affected by Fox, but not in the east.
by TheRockHead on Aug 15, 2009 4:53 PM MDT via mobile up reply actions
yea, i did read
you didn’t mention the central time zone, and between the three time zones not named the eastern time zone, i’m pretty sure a majority of MLB teams are represented. so if it’s not a league wide thing, it’s a most of the league wide thing and I don’t really pay much attention to east coast teams, so you’ll have to forgive me saying it was a league wide thing.

Rain delay in Miami...what a surprise...
…and hey, Marlins, there goes the whole excuse for playing a game that couldn’t be televised…
Giants-Mets
Just saw Santana through behind P. Sandoval then two pitches later HR… All this supposedly in retaliation for Wright getting plunked in the head. Interesting few minutes… Unfortunately, giants look in control today.
why do you think it was in retaliation?
Wright was hit in the 4th. Sandoval singled in the 6th,then homered in the 7th.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
Cain removed in the 8th
and tipped his cap to the booing crowd. What a jerk.

I'm Confused (this happens easily!)
What are options for watching this game living in Denver market?
not much
1) Pay for 1 month or year of mlb.tv and watch it online
2) “watch” it on ESPN gamecast, or one of the other streaming shows
3) LIsten to it on AM850 or one of the other radio network stations
Isn't MLB.tv blacked out in the Denver market?

by Andrew T. Fisher on Aug 15, 2009 5:09 PM MDT up reply actions
That's pretty stupid
considering it’s “exclusively theirs”.
It might be possible to locate a proxy server outside the Denver area and use that to get to MLB.TV. A lot of people do this to watch YouTube videos that are blocked by region.
i'm not entirely sure
but i’m pretty sure the blackouts are based on the address you give them when you sign up, so a proxy wouldn’t work.
by Narcoleptico on Aug 15, 2009 5:14 PM MDT up reply actions
my IP address came out as a miami one for some reason but then they verified my credit card had a denver billing address and let me watch the marlins games.. i suppose one can call their credit card company and temporarily change billing address to montana or something and then change it back after ordering mlb.tv.. i dunno if that would work!
Just the IP address.
My credit card address is in Denver, but I am not blacked out from Rockies broadcasts, They check the location of your connection to the internet.
by Greg Stanwood on Aug 15, 2009 5:19 PM MDT up reply actions
MLBTV was designed to be used by people like me, who are Rockies fans out of market.
FSNRM, and any other station broadcasting games to a market, obviously want people to watch their broadcasts. The downside, of course, is that MLBTV will black Denverites, and any other FSNRM area out even when the game isn’t being shown there.

supposedly..
1) MLB.tv will pick it up after 7 once the game starts if youre outside the network
2) Teams do have some sort of discretion in deciding game times as long as its within a set timeframe.. when i went to a season ticket holders meeting in Miami a few years ago when I still lived there, the owner was there and asked if we would prefer a 4 PM start time for sunday afternoon games or moving it down to 3 PM for the following season

Ridiculous
FOX’s rule about Saturday afternoon broadcasts is so stupid. It’s not like we pay big bucks for the cable channels that the teams are on or anything (most of which are owned by FOX). Nothing about sports pisses me off more than TV contracts.
"Speak softly and carry a big (hockey) stick." - Theodore Roosevelt
Boo, hiss!
I wonder when they would make the decision to just call it. Maybe it depends on what the weather is supposed to be like tomorrow.
Apparently, due to the frequency of rain interfering with marlins games, they very rarely postpone the game.
Even if they have to wait several hours.
by Greg Stanwood on Aug 15, 2009 5:36 PM MDT up reply actions
Aha.
Just heard why the game was scheduled for an hour earlier. Apparently there’s a postgame concert planned. By who, I don’t know.
That would explain it
I thought that it was a stupid time to schedule a game. Postgame concerts ruin everything.
Of course, tomorrow’s 3:05 MST start time doesn’t make much sense either.
"Speak softly and carry a big (hockey) stick." - Theodore Roosevelt
Could be due to weather since playing in temperatures at 1 p.m. in South Florida probably goes against the Geneva Code.

Concert by Steven Curtis Chapman
I haven’t heard of him before.
The name is vaguely familiar.
I’m thinking either country or Christian music. And now I will go Google him to see which one.
Yep, just found that.
Also saw that his 5-year-old daughter was killed a year ago when his son accidentally hit her while pulling into their driveway. How horrible.
She was adopopted from China
Steven and his wife are advocates for adoption. They have another daughter from China as well.
Really?
He’s a Christian music artist, been around an awful long time. Doesn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense to have him perform the postgame concert, but maybe they’re clearing the stadium first.
"Speak softly and carry a big (hockey) stick." - Theodore Roosevelt
they knew the entire Rockies organization would probably stick around for the concert

A caller on KOA is asking about the double switch last night where Q replaced Barmes. How many times did that get asked about here?
I wasn't in the thread last night
but I assume a lot
"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein
by Andrew T. Fisher on Aug 15, 2009 5:45 PM MDT up reply actions
At least 3-4 times.
This woman calling in clearly doesn’t realize it was a double switch (if she would even understand the reasoning behind that). She and her husband thought we would win if Barmes had been left in.
And the guys in the studio are totally clueless. Although the one guy gets a pass because he was on Broncos duty and thus didn’t see the game.
It didn't make sense to me
I wasn’t in the thread last night, and I’m not listening to the radio right now, but that double switch just seemed unnecessary. What was it, the 5th inning? That seems way too early to be double switching, unless you think that the game is out of reach. I didn’t understand it.
"Speak softly and carry a big (hockey) stick." - Theodore Roosevelt
Hammel has 95 pitches
and was to be pulled, with the pitcher’s spot up 2nd next inning. Would you have burned a reliever for one inning in that situation?
Atkins and Stewart were in the 5th and 6th spots, so they weren’t good choices for the dbl switch.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
I'd have let Eaton bat
It’s not like he couldn’t put down a sac bunt, the guy’s been in the NL for 10 years. It just seemed too early to make a DS to me.
"Speak softly and carry a big (hockey) stick." - Theodore Roosevelt
I know we hate Q, but that's not the book move
Diff between Barmes and Q > Q and a pitcher hitting
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
I don't hate Q at all
I actually like the guy. I’m just saying that, in general, the 5th inning seems incredibly early to me to be double switching.
"Speak softly and carry a big (hockey) stick." - Theodore Roosevelt
I guess I don't understand why, then
If your pitcher’s burnt that early and you’re behind, then I think it’s not much different doing on early.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
Except the replacement fielder gets at least one additional at bat in replacement of the starter
which does sway the strategic balance a bit away from the double switch. I was surprised by the move at first too, but I understand.
