Game #119: Ubaldo Jimenez vs. Craig Stammen

Colorado Rockies at Washington Nationals, Aug 18, 2009 5:05 PM MDT

As far as the Rockies' recipe for success in this game goes, Ubaldo himself said it best:

"They're a young team and they're aggressive. They like to swing a lot. I'm going to try to get on them early and put them away. I need to limit my walks, because they have a lot of speed on the basepaths. My goal is to throw strikes and get ahead early."

You betcha, Ubaldo. Go get 'em!

I think I like this twist

CarGo’s not a prototypical leadoff man, but he does have speed, and maybe this sets up Dex successfully bunting for base hits with CarGo already on?

I dunno…trying to talk myself into liking it, I suppose…

We'll see how it works.

Could go either way. I think CarGo and Fowler fit the leadoff role about equally well, but CarGo fits the 2 hole better than Fowler does.

I'm inclined to agree, but maybe this will work well against RHPs

Since Dex has been struggling from the left side a bit, and all.

Frankly, I’m not sure you can go wrong either way. But if there’s a time to give it a try, it’s now.

I’ll just say what I keep repeating, Jim Tracy’s earned an awful lot of benefit of the doubt, given the way the club’s played the last three months.

what i never got about switch hitters is

if you are going sooo bad one side and gooood the other side…just stay on one side till you cool down!

It is easier

to read the ball coming out of the other hand. The players get a longer look at the off-speed pitches and thus they bat left vs right and right vs left. Is is therefore difficult to switch around and track a ball coming from a hand or angle that is unfamiliar. Fowler could make this transition because he’s only been switch hitting for 3 years and is naturally right handed.

I think it should be a rule

If you’re a switch hitter and you bat under .200 from one side of the plate, you should not be allowed to switch hit.

by Tom (RFTN) on Aug 18, 2009 4:55 PM MDT up reply actions

It's happened

Mariano Duncan gave it up in the middle of his career. He was a late conversion to switch-hitting and had power as a righthander but really struggled as a lefty. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen to Dex.

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

Ah, we're okay $$$-wise....

In fact, I’d donate, too, to get us a 58 game winning streak ;-)

Actually, today’s been a day of GREAT news, which I blogged about….

My wife’s being moved from ICU to a long term acute care hospital by the end of this week. Seriously. She’s writing a bit now, breathing almost off-vent, doing a bunch of things. I mean, she’s a long way from stuff like walking, going home, etc., but the last 5-6 days have seen huge huge huge improvement.

Of course, she’s on lifetilt that the ICU doesn’t carry FSRM, and she’s bummed she’s missing such a great team.

Lineup Twist

I understand this as Carlos has been getting on base at a ridiculous pace lately. In the minors Dex batted second and EY2 led off, so this is nothing new to Dex. I hope Carlos can get on and Dex can do what he needs to to move him over. We need this game.

But The WASH NATs are no joke of a team the way they are playing.
I hope they revert to their ways when they first visited Coors but by no means do I think this is a slam dunk sweep…Gotta play good ball and keep their speedsters off the bases.

I can’t participate much in the game thread tonight (dinner date w/ wife), but I wanted to comment on 2 things from reading P.R. at the office (from which I can’t post) today:

1. Amazing job by the owners/front office on signing a great draft class, including a costly first pick. It’s the only way to compete longterm

2. Amazing job by the Rowbots, posting 682 comments on a signing day thread.

What a fun team & great group of knowledgeable people there are around here.

The broadcast definitely looks like 1080p to me.

But I can’t know for sure without looking at the actual equipment, as I am watching on a computer and not a television.

by Greg Stanwood on Aug 18, 2009 5:42 PM MDT up reply actions

The feed itself is not in HD.

That doesn’t mean it isn’t being shot in HD.

by Greg Stanwood on Aug 18, 2009 5:55 PM MDT up reply actions

If you can't watch it in HD then what's the difference?

That’s like saying you have a nice Samsung 1080p 120hz LCD, but you’re watching on basic cable.

The quality of an HD camera is still better than a standard definition image would be, even when not broadcast in HD.

It’s just not as good as it would be were it in an HD broadcast.

There are two main points in which a broadcast is formatted; when it is recorded from source, and when it is converted to the broadcast format. I can tell the Washington cameras recording the game are very nice, even though they are not broadcasting in HD.

by Greg Stanwood on Aug 18, 2009 6:15 PM MDT up reply actions

But keep in mind, I can't say for sure they're 1080p.

They just look like a 1080p camera in standard def to me. But again, I’m on a computer, and not on a television.

by Greg Stanwood on Aug 18, 2009 6:17 PM MDT up reply actions

You're still only receiving a 480p picture..

but it would be a little sharper on a HD camera, or it could be one did a better white balance to start the game and between innings.

Order a Purple Row t-shirt and donate to charity at:
Purple Row Cares

by Charlie77 on Aug 18, 2009 6:43 PM MDT up reply actions

I would describe it as better than "a little sharper".

You’d be surprised how good an HD quality camera can look in standard def. As someone who has shot in HD, but edited and distributed in SD, I was quite impressed at the difference the camera alone made.

by Greg Stanwood on Aug 18, 2009 6:45 PM MDT up reply actions

It should be pointed out that I don't have MLBTV premium, therefore wouldn't be able to get it in HD anyway.

Between the two SD broadcasts, Washington’s is significantly better than Colorado’s. I mean, FSNRM is still broadcasting their SD stuff in 4×3.

by Greg Stanwood on Aug 18, 2009 6:49 PM MDT up reply actions

Even in HD FSRM isn't as good..

Last week during Tulo’s Cycle, the Chicago feed was much sharper and clearer than the Fox feed. Maybe it’s just the truck and their preset filters.

………………Uball……Tim
AvgFB…..96………..93
Fbmove….-6/7………-3/11
CBmove…6/-4……….4/-6

The splits is the horizontal/vertical movement of the pitches. Uball is faster and has less drop on his FB, with more horizontal movement. He also has a less drop on his Curveball with larger movement across the plate.
