Around SBN: Knicks Beat Lakers With Familiar Strategy

Rockies 4, Nationals 3: Late HR by Clint Barmes looms large as Rox hold on

Clint Barmes picked a hell of a time to hit his first career home run to center field (and second career home run to anywhere but left field).

With one out in the top of the ninth, Barmes took Tyler Clippard deep, for just his eighth hit in his last 68 road at-bats. Clint's solo homer (19) gave the Rockies a 4-2 lead, which was a huge deal considering Huston Street allowed a run on three hits in the bottom half before Ryan Zimmerman hit a fly ball off the end of the bat to Carlos Gonzalez to end the game.

Speaking of CarGo, he hit his third home run in as many games (and seventh on the season) - a solo shot in the top of the eighth off of Sean Burnett, to break a 2-2 tie. Brad Hawpe also homered again (17) - a slightly opposite field blast off of Craig Stammen, to give the Rox an early 1-0 advantage. Other than the three solo homers, the Rockies had a tough time on offense. They only picked up six hits, and no player had more than one. On a positive note, the Rox didn't reach double digits in K's (only 7), and nobody struck out more than once.

Ubaldo Jimenez pitched through some early struggles and picked up the victory to improve his record to 11-9. He did the club a huge solid by going eight innings, while only allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out five.

I couldn't catch the game.

Damn school and football practice. Oh well..Rockies won that’s all that matters. I’m still surprised with the Matzek signing and today’s win just makes it sweeter. ROCKIES ONLY 4 GB!!!!!!! WOW…kkz. I probably won’t catch the game tomorrow either :( Early good luck for the Rox.

At work, so I missed the game. Looks like Ubaldo struggled early. Was that the result of the Nats hitting or Ubaldo missing?

We keep saying it, but another strong outing for Jimenez

He’s having quite a season.

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

Some nice numbers from Post's recap
He [Ubaldo] has worked at least six innings in 21 consecutive starts and thrown 100 pitches or more 23 times in his last 25 outings.

Barmes

I keep thinking this, but what an odd season.

He now has a 2 month stretch (June 19 – Aug 18) hitting under .200 (.199, 39 for 196 with 12HR and 48K’s).

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

FSRM

They need to stop calling Marquis the ace of the staff. He is good and I like him but really is there any doubt Ubaldo is the ace. Good win. Ubaldo on track for pitcher of the month in August.

As silly as that remark is...

… it is nice to see those four particular players having success, as all might be up with the team after the roster expansion.

by Greg Stanwood on Aug 18, 2009 9:36 PM MDT up reply actions

Well, I kind of thought of it as more of a

“Oh sure, now you learn how to pitch” kind of thing.

by Justus on Aug 18, 2009 9:47 PM MDT up reply actions

That’ll help Chacin’s confidence after that unfortunate thing that happened the other day.

Sky Sox no-hitter

An impressive Triple-A debut for Jhoulys Chacin, throwing 5 1/3 no-hit innings in Oklahoma City, against a Redhawks team that was 63-58 on the season. Then Joel Peralta, followed by Juan Rincon, and Randy Flores threw 3 2/3 perfect innings in relief after Chacin’s third walk. The Sky Sox have had three nine-inning no-hitters and they all have been combined no-hitters, along with Brandon Hynick’s 7-inning perfect game earlier this year on June 30th.

How about

Cargo’s shot? What a laser, lowest trajectory HR I’ve seen in a long time. Man, the kid hits the ball hard when he makes contact.

by Teekalong on Aug 18, 2009 9:24 PM MDT reply actions

His HR

just to the left of the manual scoreboard at Coors had a lower trajectory, but tonights was a shot on a mistake pitch.

Sky Sox no-hitter

All of a sudden, AT&T Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City is a pitchers park. The Sky Sox combined no-hitter Tuesday night was the second no-hitter thrown in that 8-game homestand in Oklahoma City. Redhawks pitcher Luis Mendoza threw a no-hitter against Salt Lake last Friday night. Two no-hitters in one homestand in one ballpark.

I was at this game

All the Rockies’ home run runs got out of the park very quickly. Not too many Rockies’ fans around.

I’m going tomorrow, as well.

Thought I’d get that in. I was kind of sports-distracted today as you can see from my new profile pic.
