Maya Lin was a grad student at Harvard Design School when she submitted the design in.
And it was just a collection of hand drawn sketches, if I remember right. Beat out all the professional designers in the competition. It completely challenged the idea of what a memorial should be.

The black stone makes for a very somber experience..
My favorite memorial was the FDR, it has blocks of stone lying around as if a building had been damaged during war, and people standing in line for a soup kitchen. The Iwo Jima memorial was more impressive than I thought it would be. The thing is huge! The Holocoust museum was very special as well.

by WolfMarauder on Aug 19, 2009 7:10 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
how do you figure 22 tonight?
Its more like 10 or 11…
by SDcat09 on Aug 19, 2009 7:17 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
team LOB 10
He’s looking at the compiled individual LOBs and adding them up which doesn’t really count as a stat.
by Rox Girl on Aug 19, 2009 7:19 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why not?
I’ve seen it measured that way more often than not.
by WolfMarauder on Aug 19, 2009 7:20 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
It's measured like that at the bottom of boxscores for some reason
But not officially counted that way. People who make the box scores add up everything else though, so they apparently feel leaving that space empty doesn’t work graphically or think people would get confused if they just put the team LOB number there.
by Rox Girl on Aug 19, 2009 7:22 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well, beyond that...
… the Washington broadcast, for example, referred to the Rockies as having left 22 runners on. Not that that somehow legitimizes it, but it seems reasonable to me. It shows the number of times a runner was failed to be brought around, which seems relevant..
by WolfMarauder on Aug 19, 2009 7:24 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, that's a pet peeve of mine when announcers use it that way too.
People who probably should know better. The Rockies have left ten runners on base. The fail is to get ten runners home, not 22.
by Rox Girl on Aug 19, 2009 7:27 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Correct.
So I suppose left on base is the improper title. But wouldn’t the fact that 22 times, a runner on base failed to score, still be relevant? Different yes, but indicative of larger offensive issues than say would ten times runner left on?
Imagine if we had the same total players LOB, but each of them was only left on for one out, as opposed to 2-3. Using the total would indicate that.
by WolfMarauder on Aug 19, 2009 7:29 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
that still leaves somebody with the impression
that if we were perfectly successful, we’d be up 29 to 3 right now. I think it’s a good way of making a problem seem large, if that’s what you’re getting at.
by Rox Girl on Aug 19, 2009 7:31 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, I agree with you there.
When I said “the Rockies have left 22 on base”, I was not trying to imply we could have scored 20+ runs. In my form of usage, knowing what it represented, I was trying to imply that we have had several times runners have failed to score, not several runners who have failed to score.
I can completely see why using the title “left on base” is misleading, but it seems to me using it in this method isn’t exactly useless.
by WolfMarauder on Aug 19, 2009 7:33 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, we're winning, but I want to see good execution too.
And they haven’t executed today.
