Rockies 5, Nationals 4: All hail our new overlords, Clint Barmes and Carlos Gonzalez

This was a frustrating and ultimately victorious game for the Rockies. In the first inning, Collin Balester walked the first three batters and committed an error on a pickoff attempt. Troy Tulowitzki then knocked in two on a double. Balester issued another walk, this one to Brad Hawpe. Then came three straight outs. Jason Marquis gave up an RBI triple to Ryan Zimmerman in the bottom of the first, but Dexter Fowler answered back in the top of the second with his own RBI triple.

Time passed as nothing much happened until the fifth inning. That's when Clint Barmes hit his 20th homer of the season. However, Cristian Guzman and Ryan Zimmerman wanted to make things interesting by putting two more runs in Marquis' "R" column. 4-3, Rockies.

More time passed until the top of eighth when Carlos Gonzalez led off the inning with a homer. Things quieted down after that--punctured when Huston Street allowed a leadoff homer in the top of the ninth to Josh Bard. But then ground out, ground out, and ground out. Huston Street wrapped up his 31st save and Jason Marquis notched his 14th win.

Not pretty. Very frustrating. Still a win.

If right now = the last 7 games

Then yes for Barmes. Otherwise, not so much. In the 2nd half, he has 10HR already, but he’s also hitting .180 or so.

I was very happy, actually...

Lots of runners LOB almost always go hand in hand with lots of runs and therefore lots of wins.

I think it's just one of those..

stats that shows when you have a good offense, there will be times when the men on base don’t always score. The Rockies offense gets lots of opportunities and it shows tonight and in the blow out games.

With any stat, you need to know the context

What’s an average LOB%, and does it change for different run environments.

But definitely, numerous runners LOB per se isn’t the issue.

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

by FooMan on Aug 19, 2009 9:56 PM MDT up reply actions

Guys, I have a LOB question

In the box score there is a LOB column – for example, in last night’s game, this totalled 29 for the Rockies, with 7 for Stewie, 6 for Ianetta etc. There was also a team LOB of 12. What do these numbers mean?

by biondino on Aug 20, 2009 10:12 AM MDT up reply actions

It means that

for instance, lets say Ian Stewart came up with 2 men on and strikes out. His LOB is now 2. If he comes up again with the bases loaded and flies out, it’s now 6 total.

The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.

by Resolution on Aug 20, 2009 11:15 AM MDT up reply actions

and team LOB is

is the total number of guys stranded at the end of an inning.

I dunno if Huston is trying out for the Brian Fuentes School of Closing

but whatever he’s doing, he needs to knock it off PRONTO. It’s pretty annoying that we have to fight this hard to win games over the Nats — we just let them hang around and hang around and hang around. Sweep tomorrow plz?

Lucky win

Rox were dang lucky to win this one. Game should have been over in the first. We’ll have a more difficult time escaping better opponents if we continue this RLISP trend. It would also help if Barmes & CarGo could hit HRs with other Rockies on base. The “Lone Ranger” routine is all well and good, but some additional RBIs would be appreciated.

2nd half: 3-2, 3.38 ERA, 6.67 IP/start, 4.7 K/9 2.7 K/9 0.45 HR/9

by Resolution on Aug 19, 2009 11:08 PM MDT up reply actions

it's a query language

for querying against databases. You can do some computation with it, though it’s not going to be as powerful as a regular stats package (SPSS and the like). If you’ve ever used MS Access, you can build queries using the GUI tools, but then you can look at the underlying SQL statements.

But a lot of the stat guys will build databases of MLB statistical data, or play-by-play data (say from retrosheet, or by spidering data from gameday), and use sql to select sets of data and so forth, or do simple calculations, like various custom splits.

I live in LA and watch all the Dodgers games (Know thy enemy) and Vin Scully drives me crazy.

The first time you watch the Dodgers play someone you learn a bunch of fun facts. Then you listen to the second game of the series and it sounds very similiar. The third and fourth are EXACTLY the same. It gets worse. The next time the Dodgers play that team he just says the same exact thing about each player.

For example,

“Here is Garrett Atkins, he is the only player to ever be an All American twice for UCLA.”

“Here comes Big Matt Holiday, back in 2006 he hit a home run over the palm trees in left field.”

I ask Dodgers fans if he annoys them too, they say no and that they love him. I then realize that they are Dodger fans and don’t really watch the game at all. They just play with beach balls and wait for the to come.

I would say so

only because it seems pretty common for starters to do that during their first full season.

Like Yovani Gallardo this year or Edinson Volquez last year…

The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.

I was thinking 100 innings might be a barometer..

because Kershaw is at 130. But in 2007 Ubaldo had 103 innings in the minors before he was called up and he put up better stats in the Majors than he had in AAA. He pitched an extra 82 innings for the Rockies.

Ubaldo's a lovely exception.

Kevin Goldstein at Baseball Prospectus actually uses 120 IP as his barometer when he expects the falloff.

Which worries me about Chacin..

replacing Hammel in the starting lineup. Orange Julius has 115 IP this year between AA, AAA and MLB.

Chacin actually

put up a ton of innings in 2008. Like 170~ which is a little odd because he threw 92 the year before. It might have been wise to shut him down at like 130, 140.

Both Hynick and Rogers are around 140 innings..

so if you go by your rule of thumb the Rockies shouldn’t call up anyone.

I wouldn't go that far

Will they be relievers on the big club?

Also, how many innings did they throw last year. If they threw something close to 140, then I wouldn’t consider it too big of a deal.

Increasing a 20 year old’s innings from 92 to 170 just seems a little reckless.

The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.

by Resolution on Aug 19, 2009 10:47 PM MDT up reply actions

I should modify that

I wouldn’t go by how many innings they threw last year (although I’d certainly weigh it), but rather what is the most innings they’ve thrown in a professional season.

The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.

by Resolution on Aug 19, 2009 10:49 PM MDT up reply actions

The Rockies need to figure out a solution for Hammel..

His last few outings have been inconsistent 4.0, 5.0, 6.2, 1.1 IP.

Rogers threw 140 innings last year, so 170 wouldn’t extend him that much. Hynick threw 170+ the past two years in a row, so he may be better prepared for the increase in innings- or ready for a breakdown, but if it’s for a WS run we can sacrifice him on the altar of Jeff Francis. Right?

Kershaw, inbetween minors and majors last year, threw about 169, and that's not including the playoffs

So an increase shouldn’t be much to him, however, he had a big innings increase from 2007 to 2008, so maybe he’s having Cole Hamels like fatigue?

by bballrox4717 on Aug 19, 2009 10:56 PM MDT up reply actions

Well

for Hammel, I’m not sure. I probably wouldn’t do anything because it’s only a 4 game stretch and the 6.2 inning and the 5 inning starts weren’t that bad.

In all honesty, he’s been awesome for a 5th starter that we gave up not too much for. Hammel has been ridiculously unlucky at home and lucky on the road.

As for the prospects and the innings – ultimately genetics has a say in who gets fatigued, who gets injured, and who dominates. But it makes sense (to me at least) to limit a guy’s innings to avoid large inning’s increases (40 or more).

Another factor to consider is that pitching in the big leagues for your first full season has to be rather stressful which can exacerbate any genetic shortcomings or whatever.

Rogers and Hynick would both be fine (at least according to my crackpot theory), in terms of innings this year. They’d be relieving or only making a handful of starts for the Rox anyway.

In Hammel's defense,

the 1.1 IP his last time out had to be due to his extenuating circumstances.

by Justus on Aug 19, 2009 11:09 PM MDT up reply actions

Don't forget, in Modesto

Near the end of the season, they limited Chacin to 5 innings a start. It’s not like they are being careless with his arm….if threw all out all year, he could’ve won twenty.

Ubaldo actually had a lot of innings in 2006

like 160~ innings. The jump to 180 wasn’t that much. But yea, for fantasy purposes, I just try to deal these starters around the all-star break.

How about Wainwright as a comp for Friedrich

Opposite handedness, obviously. But Wainwright had big minor league success (though he started younger and Friedrich’s K rates are even higher) and his main pitch is a hammer. (And not the Dr. Horrible variety.) Good but not exceptional fastball.

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

by FooMan on Aug 19, 2009 10:25 PM MDT up reply actions

I always thought of Friedrich of being another Barry Zito

well, when Zito was a Cy Young winner, not an overpaid average starter

by bballrox4717 on Aug 19, 2009 10:33 PM MDT up reply actions

I've not seen Friedrich's curve

Have you, or have you heard it described? Zito and Wainwrights are both crazy, but in different ways. Zito’s drops from the sky, whereas Wainwright has more of that hard 12-to-6 break.

I thought of Zito (esp. as I remember pre-Giants Zito, so I don’t necessarily think of him as bad), except Friedrich’s supposed to have a better fastball.

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

by FooMan on Aug 19, 2009 11:09 PM MDT up reply actions

Without having seen his curve except in maybe some crappy scouting video

It’s been described as the best curve in the majors.

The only other thing I can offer is that Zito’s curve was so big he’d have trouble throwing it for strikes which is why he’s always walked so many people.

Friedrich so far has maintained nice walk rates so I;m guessing his curve has good break without breaking tooo much.

The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.

Would that be

my “crappy scouting video” from spring training this March?

Also, if he has the best curve in the majors while still being in Single-A, we would have to be excited no matter how it moved.

I was at the game last night

and will be at tonight’s game too.

Boy did we get lucky. Against a decent team and this team would be down 0-2 in the series. It will be good to get back home. At the same time, we were 1-2 hits away from blowing the Nats out. The silver lining is that good teams find a way to win and we certainly did….barely.

Loved what I saw from Tulo and Barmes defensively last night. Tulo almost made an incredible play on Dunn when the infield shift was on.

Looking forward to tonight’s match. Let’s home Hammel can keep us in the game
