Your favorite non-Rockie?
In last night's game thread, I believe, It was brought up that Stephen Drew was someone's favorite non-Rockie. That got me wondering who everybody's favorite non-Rockie players were around here. I think we should eliminate former Rockies from the conversation, so no picking Matt Holliday or Brian Fuentes. It should be interesting to see who the other popular players are among the Rowbots around here. A why to your selection would be nice too.
By the way, my favorite non-Rockie is Chipper Jones. I've got family in Atlanta and the Braves have pretty mych always been my second favorite team.

Tim Lincecum
I’m a sucker for young guys who just blow people away, and I just love seeing the rookies play. Before he came up, it was pre injury Mark Prior, and if I had to choose a polished veteran, it’s Mark Texieira. I also have an eye on Brett Anderson, Adam Wainwright, and Tommy Hanson.
I also remember that as a kid, I adored Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, and it really wrecked me to learn that they cheated.
Hmmm.....looking back at this
Is it bad that my two childhood heroes were steroid using cheaters who defamed Maris’s HR record?
I just loved the moment when Sosa came in through the outfield and hugged McGwire when he broke the record….

Rich Harden
Though he’s actually probably my favorite player in all of baseball. Though I also keep an eye on a few Cardinals (Wainwright, Carpenter, Pujols), Ryan Braun, Evan Longoria, David Wright….Danny Haren when I think about it, and even though he hasn’t been pitching since 2007, Noah Lowry.
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
RICH HARDEN
also, Roy Halladay.
The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.
Pujols, Josh Hamilton
and if you count managers, Ozzie Guillen
My vote is split three ways
Adam Wainwright, Chris Carpenter, and Albert Pujols. Wainwright, I think, takes the top spot.
I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.
Joe Mauer, Albert Pujols, Chone Figgins, Torii Hunter
Although I guess Figgy technically counts as a former Rockie.
Just an average guy with exceptional hair. Nothing more, nothing less.

Roy Halladay
and Alex Gordon (know he hasn’t done a whole lot yet) but had the opportunity to watch him play in College at UNL.
Shouldn't everyone's favorite be Tony Gwynn, Jr.?
He gets my vote for defeating the Padres in 2007 to help get us in the play-in game.
I also have always liked Chipper Jones and Aramis Ramirez.

Do shouldabeen Rockies count?
If so, Longoria’s high on my list. I also like Granderson and Willingham, but I’ll have to think of more…

I have three
Albert Pujols is flat awesome. Vladimir Guerrero because he can hit anything. Literally. Did you see the one this weekend where the pitch bounced first? Lastly, I really respect Joe Mauer. Catchers should not be able to hit .380.
From 2001-2003
it was Alfonso Soriano. Since 2004, Mark Teixeira.

Purple Row - Covering all your Rockies needs!
Definitely
Chase Utley. I actually kind of like the Phillies in general; the seem like a semi-Rockies. That might be based on the playoffs of ’07, but eh. Utley is just awesome.

I have to go with
Jeff Francoeur. Partly based on the fact that he has a striking resemblance to my dear late father, but also because the kid is a natural but somehow lost favor with the Braves organization and was treated no better than dog poop by same. I hope he haunts them for years to come.
Otherwise, Pujols is amazing, and David Wright ain’t too shabby either.
I'll have another beer, please.
I'm sure
some of us here want to burn you at the stake for the Drew thing.

Oh, I'm sure.
If there was such thing as a public opinion ban, I’m pretty sure I’d be one of the first to get the boot. (To be clear, I’m not suggesting we implement this idea. I kinda like this place.)
Well, I don't have anything against Drew, either.
One of my favorite college players.

Oh and some of my others:
I tip my cap to Halladay and Pujols. I am rather excited to see what kind of monster Andrew McCutcheon can become. and I really like Tim Lincecum and Josh Wilingham.
Sorry, but
you can’t like Andrew McCutchen if Dexter Fowler is on your favorite team. ;-)

Bah spelling fail.
I should at least learn to spell my favorite players correctly.
You're DQ'ed from
liking McCutchen now.

How about Willingham too?

I like solid players
Guys who are consistant, and play the right way. My favorite pitcher is Cliff Lee. All his pitchers are great and he is so well rounded. My favorite batter is probably Ichiro, I love defense and he plays great d. All time Ken Griffy Jr. I like McCutchen too.
Catchers
I have a soft spot for hardest defensive position on the field, catcher. I like Pudge because he has done it well for so long and he has gone back to my favorite AL team the Rangers. You gotta love Mauer (.378 with 25 long balls and a .446 OBP are you kidding me?). I grew up wathcing Joe Carter and Joe Girardi.
However, my favorite catcher of all time is hands down Johnny Bench. Great player, I have had the opportunity to meet him and he seemed like a nice guy. However, the main reason is his staring role on my favorite show as a kid. “THE BASEBALL BUNCH”…. (We gotta hunch you’ll love the baseball bunch…). I googled “The Baseball Bunch” and it took me back to my childhood. I think I will go make out my list for Santa Claus now.
What if the hokey pokey is what it is all about after all????
Chone Figgins
came up in the Rockies’ system, of course, but he should still qualify as he never put on the purple pinstripes. He’s amazingly versatile and productive, he has a Juan Pierre-like work ethic, hustles ceaselessly and plays the game the right way. Plus he plays for the one AL team I always root for (except for the obvious).
I would have to say
that my favorite non-Rockies would be Chris Carpenter and Mark Buehrle.

9 "Phinsider Feud" Points
My favs
Current Players
Pujols, Alexi Ramirez, Josh Hamilton
Favorite Players Ever
Ozzie Smith, George Brett (before the rox were here I used to pay a lot of attention to the Missouri teams)
George Brett and Ozzie Smith were awesome
No explanation needed there. They are two of the many reasons why I love baseball.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
Mariano Rivera
Hate the Yankees, but this guy is a freak. SO good, even as he ages. Mostly though, I’ve seen a few interviews with him and he’s still humble, intelligent and classy. He recently said there’s a few closers in the gamre right now better than he is. Even if that’s true (highly debatable), it’s refreshing to hear a star athlete not be his own PR machine.
Great Question
From the retired category it has to be Nolan Ryan. Got to see him late in his career pitch into the 10th inning in Texas, first pitch we could hear the pitch still pop in the catcher’s glove from our seats in CF. From the almost retired its either Griff or Chipper. Among the young players I would pick Chone but he is an ex-Rockie, so it has to be Hanly Ramirez. The guy is awesome to watch, especially now that he is putting out effort on D. power, speed, SS, as long as its not against the Rockies, I could watch him all day.
The great news is that there are so many great players to watch right now. As a now ex-football fan, the athletes, the storylines, the amazing plays, and now hopefully no steroids (or at least less of them), its a great time to be a baseball fan. Watched MLB network the other day showing a Tigers-Yank game from Fidrich’s rookie season and you realize how much better baseball players are today. 1-22 or so on most teams there are very few players who would not have been starting for either of those teams.

Good question
Taking the former Rox out of the equation makes it harder – and a lot of my former favorite players are retired or in the twilight of their careers.
So I’ll go with Brian Shouse.
Reviews of some great baseball sites and other cool stuff on my web magazine @ The Casual Observer
Do former players count?
I have soft spots for Mark Belanger Carlton Fisk, Carl Yastremszki, and Brett Butler, though my favorite alltimer is probably Greg Maddux. Favorite still playing today is probably the Kid.
But as Willie Nelson sang, my heroes have always been Rockies.
Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave
I've got 2
Ivan Rodriguez. But that is more for who/what he used to be when he first came up. My favorite player. He’s a shadow of his former self (literally and figuratively)
and Ichiro I love the way this guy plays. He’s so talented in so many different ways. And fundamentally perfect in all phases of his game
Ryan Zimmerman
has been a favorite of mine for a while now. Nick Swisher is another guy I’ve liked for several years, now. I’ll also include Carl Crawford because I have always thought that guy was awesome.
I thought you knew that algebra was all razzamatazz. A Globetrotter always saves the good algebra for the final minutes.
I feel terrible
that I forgot Joe Mauer. That guy is too likable.

Seems like you guys
sure do like the Cardinals. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be Kenny Powers. I hear he is a free agent. Could be a good move for the pen.
President of the Don Draper fan club.
Tim Lincecum
Tim is my guilty pleasure. I love watching that guy pitch (not against us though). He is truly a medical marvel as I can’t figure out how he hasn’t blown something out by now.
I also really like Brian Roberts (O’s), Pujols, and Longoria.
Why a guilty pleasure?
He’s a great player. Who knows how long he will stay at this peak. Gather ye rosebuds while ye may.
Though I don’t know why everyone thinks he’s going to blow out his arm. He gets a lot of body into his delivery, I don’t see why that’s a bad thing.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
Not a bad thing...
I think his delivery is so different from anything we’ve really see anywhere else that the natural inclination is to assume that his mechanics are weird which just kind of translates to “injury”. I agree that he gets a ton of body and most of his power seems to come from his insane hip movement, but the delivery just seems so violent sometimes that we can’t help but wonder how he keeps going.
Playing now
I’d have to say Pablo Sandoval. He has a plus body and plays the game the right way.
For players no longer playing, I’d have to go with Gene Tenace or Carney Lansford.
For players that I followed before they were Rockies, but don’t really qualify for this poll, I’d have to go with Ellis Burks and Walt Weiss.
The oxen are slow, but the earth is patient.
Walt Weiss
My favorite player of all-time. That dude is exactly who I wanted to be when I was playing SS in Little League.
I thought you knew that algebra was all razzamatazz. A Globetrotter always saves the good algebra for the final minutes.

Isn't he still a Rockie? Employed by the team in some capacity?
"I've had pretty good success with Stan Musial by throwing him my best pitch and backing up third." - Carl Erskine
All Time
I’d have to say Kirby Puckett. He had some amazing catches against the baggy and some pretty clutch hits too.
Current non Rockie would have to be Griffey, but I almost feel that he should be in the retired category.
Playing now
Pujols and Halladay…. It’s just not right how scary good both are..
All time: Barry Larkin and Ozzie Smith. Before Rockies, was a big Reds fan (born in Ohio), and who can not love Ozzie?!
old timers ( like me)
Boog Powell – Orioles, very patient at bat , reminds me of Helton
Johnny Bench – Reds, best catcher, one of my sons wanted to play second base for the Reds when he was growing up so we watched him whenever we could. Good times
Most ispirational: Roberto Clemente – Pirates, what a great guy. Gone too soon !
Dave Dravecky – Giants , Wasn’t stopped by tragedy and used it to help
many people.
Ichiro
He hits well over .300, has 200+ hits every year, is a smart baserunner, and plays superb defense. And he goes by one name. Can’t get any better than that!
Gladly sharing a name with Dexter Fowler!
