Game #123: Joe Martinez vs. Jorge de la Rosa
San Francisco Giants at Colorado Rockies, Aug 22, 2009 6:10 PM MDT
Tonight begins the final forty.
Jorge de la Rosa, who has won 9 of his last 10 starts and 10 of 12, will face Joe Martinez, whose most newsworthy appearance on the mound this season came when he was hit by a line drive off the head April 9 against Milwaukee. See left.
Martinez hasn't allowed more than 3 runs in any game, but this is the rookie's fourth career start, and he has yet to pitch past 5 innings. He throws a high 80's fastball almost 3/4's of the time, plus an average curve and change that are roughly the same speed (high 70's). He hasn't been a strikeout pitcher since A-ball, so this is a pitching matchup the Rockies absolutely must take advantage of. Plus, SBNation's data widget claims he is 19months old (he's actually 26. Years).
We need not only to win, but to send a message.
The trainer's report favors the Rockies tonight. Tulo is back, while Freddy Sanchez is out of the lineup again.

We need to win. We need to get offensive. Go Rox!

Has anybody heard if Tulo's feeling better?
We really need him out there. The lineup last night lacked punch, to put it lightly.
Tulo will start tonight

I think so
If Jorge goes five, we can piece together the rest just fine. And he’s done that in 10 straight starts

Herges (or Morales) could pull three innings in an absolute emergency.
But we’d prefer not to have to try that, as both are basically 2 inning pitchers max.

why is Lawrence Davis
still posting? Why isn’t he banned?
Really, I’m pissed. Not at questioning my pick, but the way he did it, and the name calling and like 75 posts on the fact I had a k for an h on one name
There are a lot of grumpy people on the internet.
I wouldn’t support the allowance of a ban because of grumpiness. Granted, I didn’t read the exchange in question, so if he was abusive or some such, then that might be a cause for such an act.
But a banhammer for an attitude just isn’t reasonable unless it’s somehow causing serious harm, I feel.
by Greg Stanwood on Aug 22, 2009 5:48 PM MDT up reply actions
I think he was out of line
but he did eventually apologize, and as WolfM says, banning may be a bit extreme. It seems like some people just post to get reactions though, and sometimes people try to pick e-fights.
by realmenwearpurple on Aug 22, 2009 5:54 PM MDT up reply actions
In addition, fightning on the internet almost always seems more hostile than it actually is...
… simply because the tone of the exchange is not detectable. I’ve had long discussions on this very blog that I saw as civil, but only learned later that other people thought I was legitimately being antagonistic. Just goes that way sometimes.

Phew...
Having Tulo and Cargo back in the line-up feels good.
Corpas' surgery arm got infected.
He’s not coming back this year for sure now, barring some sort of playoff shenanigans.
Maybe Cook, Francis and Corpas will all come back for the World Series

We have Jimenez vs. Lincecum tomorrow, then Cain vs. Zito.
Dodgers will see Hammel vs. Kershaw, Fogg/Eaton vs. Wolf, and De La Rosa presumably against Padilla in his Dodgers’ debut after he makes his minor league start tonight.
Then we get rematches of Jimenez vs. Lincecum and Marquis vs. Zito, then hammel vs. Cain. Wowee.

We don't get as many as other forums
but I’ve been places where people drop in and say “Matt Holliday will be traded to the Padres. I have a source” just to stir the pot. Since you didn’t give a source or any reason why you would know something more than has been published (as a person did regarding Matzek – he worked for Oregon baseball), it appears as an unsubstantiated rumor, which is one method of trolling.

I see now
replacing Q I suppose? Though Q is a nice glove, he has little bat without any chances. Hard to get hits when you never have ABs.

by Greg Stanwood on Aug 22, 2009 6:10 PM MDT up reply actions
Q made the team because we weren't sure if we were going to need backup IF help.
We’ve now gone three quarters through the season, and we haven’t. Before, we didn’t have any real reason to get rid of Q, but with a competitive endgame scenario ahead, if we can upgrade, we should upgrade.
by Greg Stanwood on Aug 22, 2009 6:08 PM MDT up reply actions
You expect a guy to get hits when he has 1 AB a week?
Against a top shelf closer (stuff wise)? I think even the best hitters we have would struggle without occasional oportunities.
by realmenwearpurple on Aug 22, 2009 6:10 PM MDT up reply actions
No, Smith gets several ABs a week.
He gets about 10 ABs per Q AB.
by realmenwearpurple on Aug 22, 2009 6:11 PM MDT up reply actions
He gets far more ABs than Quintanilla.
And is also a better offensive player to begin with.
by Greg Stanwood on Aug 22, 2009 6:11 PM MDT up reply actions
Not necessarily his fault...
… but still reflective of what he adds to the team in his current condition to begin with.
