Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Paging Dr. Smith: Seth saves Rockies with two run blast off Lincecum, team now three up in wild card chase

Seth Smith cures what's ailing the Rockies. Last night he supplied a key triple in the Rockies big comeback win. In this case, Carlos Gonzalez, one of the team's hottest hitters goes down with a cut hand and Smith steps in and provides the go ahead blow, a crushing 450 ft two run home run to right off of Tim Lincecum to help the Rockies to a 4-2 victory.

Ubaldo Jimenez had one big mistake, a second inning two run home run allowed to Edgar Renteria, only the third home run Renteria has hit all season, but otherwise pitched very well through eight innings, allowing just six hits, walking two and striking out nine. With the win he improves to 12-9 on the season.

For the Rockies on offense, hits were at a premium, Smith's home run was one of just three hits by the team off Lincecum in seven innings. In fact, through five innings they couldn't even manage one. The others were a bloop single by Todd Helton to break up the no hitter in the sixth, and a subsequent clutch single by Ian Stewart with two outs to drive him home. The Rockies did make up for the lack of hits with patience, collecting five walks off of Lincecum to drive up his pitch count and move runners along.

Giant defensive miscues and a wild bullpen led to a bases loaded situation in the eighth and Sergio Romo plunked Clint Barmes to drive in Troy Tulowitzki for the Rockies final score.

Huston Street pitched a perfect ninth for his 33rd save.

The win puts the Rockies three games ahead of the Giants, four ahead of the Braves, and five ahead of Florida for the wild card spot in the NL. With a Dodgers loss to the Cubs the Rockies also gain a game in the division standings and are once again just 3.5 games behind Los Angeles.

Oh, and good catch on the Fat Giambi signing. I’m still completely befuddled by it, because he’s got nothing left, and can’t see why we’d make a 40-man move to bring him up. But great job on the call ahead of time.

With apologies to

Uball and Smith, thanks to SF for that one. Pretty terrible baseball played by SF, other than Lincecum, who was great until that mistake to Smith. Likewise, other than Renteria’s shot, Uball was pretty special today. A few hard hit balls found gloves, but still a terrific effort for an ace showing up to battle. I guess we’ll see this same matchup next Friday in SF?

by Teekalong on Aug 23, 2009 5:30 PM MDT reply actions

Yeah, I think we got lucky,

but so did they. The hit ahead of Renteria’s homer was pretty weak, and if Stewie comes up with it cleanly he’s out. Tulo almost got him anyway.

On the other hand, did anybody else think that Garko gave us that first run? I was at the game, so maybe I didn’t have the best perspective, but it looked like the throw from right would have beaten Todd if it hadn’t been cut off. It looked like it would have been a little down the third base side, but still close enough to get Todd.

by RoxnSox09 on Aug 23, 2009 5:52 PM MDT up reply actions

The Rockies are showing this year that they can win

by not playing down to the level of their competition, which is still a good sign. The team is much more fundamentally sound than most others they’ve played this year. Sometimes you get the victory just by not being stupid.

by Rox Girl on Aug 23, 2009 6:15 PM MDT up reply actions

Hmm lucky...only...

SF playing poor defense and not hitting. Is that something new? You could easily say that Friday the Giants got lucky because they got some hits, because they typically don’t hit very well. This is the nature of the game. The Rockies have spent most of this season capitalizing on other teams miscues. Ubaldo pitched a great game. Would you be saying the Rox were lucky if Lincecum hadn’t been throwing a no-hitter?

Weird…

The team is finding ways to win games like this in place of games we lose due to extraordinary circumstances...

… like Monday when we finally lost Cook to injury (it really doesn’t seem Cookie’s got a full season in him).

by Greg Stanwood on Aug 23, 2009 6:02 PM MDT up reply actions

I just got back from the game,

and what a game it was. It’s been a couple of months since I’ve seen one in person, and this was about as good as it gets. I tried to get tickets through King Soopers on Thursday, but they were already sold out. Then I tried online, and everything was gone except the club level. Fortunately, I have a Wells Fargo account, so I got the two-for-one deal. When I got to the game, though, there were people still buying tickets at the window. Do they hold back some of the tickets for walk up sales? Also, are the Rockpile seats available online? It said they were sold out with the rest of them, which surprised me. I guess one downside to being in a playoff race is that tickets are harder to get, but that’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.

by RoxnSox09 on Aug 23, 2009 5:57 PM MDT reply actions

Yes and Yes

Some seats are held back during the regular season for walk-up sales. Usually only about 1500 or so. I’m not sure about the playoffs however. As for Rockpile seats, you can buy them online but at least half, maybe more of them are held back for day-of-game sales. Kings has a finite number of seats to sell for all games, and gets shut down completely at a certain zero-hour before a game. What that zero-hour is I’ve never been able to figure out, and neither have the folks at my King Soopers.

I'll have another beer, please.

by rockhead on Aug 23, 2009 6:15 PM MDT up reply actions

Yeah, I don't know when that is either.

In years past I’ve been able to buy those tickets within less than 6 hours of the game, but twice this year they’ve been sold out several days in advance. I guess I have to plan ahead better.
