Dexter Fowler heads to the 15-day DL with a deep bruise in his knee, while Eric Young Jr and Matt Murton will be called up.

Fowler was already battling inflammation in the knee he didn't hit last night. Matt Murton hit .321 with 10 HR and 71 RBI in AAA. Eric Young Jr just began getting time in CF and hit .299 with 7 HR, 43 RBI and 58 SB.

UPDATE: Ringolsby originally reported that Carlos Gonzalez was placed on the 15-day DL as well. Now he and Troy Renck both report that Adam Eaton has been optioned to AAA to make room for Murton instead.

I've been worried about this

The injury bug hitting late in the season. Man, this is so not good. Have to try and get through it and not lose any ground at the very least.

I'll have another beer, please.

I doubt anyone wanted this to be the reason for EY2's call up

But while he’s here…enjoy!

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

by FooMan on Aug 25, 2009 3:26 PM MDT up reply actions

So they are eligible to come back Sept 8th?

They can begin their rehab assignments before then right?

I gotta imagine EY2 takes over Fowler while Spilly and Murton play backups…..we need the speed.

by bballrox4717 on Aug 25, 2009 3:19 PM MDT reply actions

Really? I'd think Spilly would get most of the starts in CF

It looks like EY2 has played 16 games in center, plus whatever he’s done in the fall league/winter ball.

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

by FooMan on Aug 25, 2009 3:23 PM MDT up reply actions

No no

Look, i know Spilly can play a pretty good center, but my point is, that we need speed in this lineup since we just lumped our two fastest players on the DL. If Fowler is going be gone, then we absolutely need EY2 to turn into Dex while he’s gone. CarGo’s loss is something I’m not too worried about, since Murton is a solid hitter to play Smith’s role, and Smith is the LF starter by default now, since he can replicate CarGo’s production pretty easily. Right now, EY2 needs to be a weapon in center.

by bballrox4717 on Aug 25, 2009 3:30 PM MDT up reply actions

It would be nice, but he needs to be able to play a passable center first,

And I’m not sure he’s really able to do that except in small doses. If he is, then sure, your way might be optimal.

by Rox Girl on Aug 25, 2009 3:31 PM MDT up reply actions

Right now, we know he has the range, given EY2's ridiculous speed

It’s whether he can judge where the ball is going that is going to define EY2 in center for now.

I really think we called EY2 to replace Dex’s job, with Spilly playing center in small doses. we just need the speed in the lineup too much.

by bballrox4717 on Aug 25, 2009 3:34 PM MDT up reply actions

An alternate theory

EY2 may not be judged ready to play CF in Coors, so we drop him in at 2B, and #2 in the order, and Barmey sits for a couple.

That's my hope.

Lately, Spilly >> Barmes. The other question is how EY2’s defense compares to Barmes at second or Spilly in center. I think if it just comes down to offense, it’s no question that he replaces Barmes, but you need to take everything into account.

by RoxnSox09 on Aug 25, 2009 3:38 PM MDT up reply actions

If the previous reports are to be believed

Barmes’ 2B defense >>>>>> EY2’s

Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave

by Mondogarage on Aug 25, 2009 3:39 PM MDT up reply actions

Sitting Barmes at this point would be plain idiotic, no offense

Especially with two lefties throwing for the Dodgers in the next two days. I can see Spilly getting the starts in center for now, Smith in left, but, the worst part of this all, is defense and speed that we are losing, emphasis on the speed.

by bballrox4717 on Aug 25, 2009 3:40 PM MDT up reply actions

Well, I guess this means

Hawpe better improve his defense ASAP and let’s hope he’s going to be the Dodger killer that his numbers have shown in the past.

by SDcat09 on Aug 25, 2009 3:34 PM MDT up reply actions

Actually, I believe they can come back September 1st

The 25 man roster (and the 15 day DL) disappear on September 1st. As they are both on the 40 man roster, they are eligible to play again on Sep 1st. We got lucky, it’s only a 6 or 7 day DL with the injuries happening now :)

by amoeba on Aug 25, 2009 3:28 PM MDT up reply actions

wow, I did not know that.

I need to pay more attention to Jabberwocky’s columns. Good news, then.

by Rox Girl on Aug 25, 2009 3:30 PM MDT up reply actions

Is that from Jabberwocky's column?

I don’t see it in his roster/DL article.

Also, in the ITR thread, Ringolsby said was working to confirm whether both are indeed headed to the DL.

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

by FooMan on Aug 25, 2009 3:36 PM MDT up reply actions

This reawakes my theory
With Dexter Fowler’s right knee swollen, the Rockies made a roster move today putting him on the disabled list and calling up speedster Eric Young Jr. from Colorado Springs.

The Rockies also called up outfielder Matt Murton, but the corresponding roster move to make room for him was not yet known.

CarGo not to go on DL, and perhaps Eaton DFA’d.

Watching the purple row from high atop the big brown monolith on California Ave

by Mondogarage on Aug 25, 2009 3:40 PM MDT up reply actions

No, but Eaton's already unavailable for a couple of days

Based on his # of pitches thrown last night, and by then, we’re only four days from roster expansion, so it’s a better alternative than sending down a position player who doesn’t really need to be out 15 days.

Ringoslby Confirmed!
Dexter Fowler was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a deep bone bruise suffered when he fouled a ball off his right knee in the Rockies 6-4, 14-inning victory against San Francisco.

The Rockies also optioned pitcher Adam Eaton to Triple-A Colorado Springs to create the other roster spot.

if Fowler came back as a September call up then also technically he wouldn’t be eligible for postseason play, not being on the 25 man at the time. I don’t think we have that loophole

All players both on the active 25 man roster AND on the DL on August 31st are eligible for post-season play.

Via Tracy:
The requirement to be on the post-season roster is that you are in an organization by Aug. 31.
If a team has 25 active players and none on the DL then those 25 are the ones who go. If a team has five or six players on the DL it expands the choices they can make for filling out the post-season roster.

I thought that they shouldn't have left him in.

Why not just put the pitcher in the #3 spot vacated by Helton and then Gonzalez? Leave Hawpe and Spilly where they are. Then you don’t have CarGon bunting later on, or have to pinch hit for him.

Yup, and he's earned a LOT of leeway, too...

….because no doubt there will be a couple of decisions that don’t work out. The difference between he and Hurdle is that, in Tracy’s case, I’m assured that he’s actually thoroughly considered all the likelihoods before he makes the call. He is one of the best prepared managers in the game, and has a reputation for being so.

Now's the time to do this...

The Rockies have these two big series against LA and SF, but a relatively easy ten game homestand after that to recuperate where we should be favored even without CarGo and Dex. This means Murton and EY2 are eligible for the post season too, if need be. This recent injury bug hurts, but I don’t think it’s devastating yet.

by Rox Girl on Aug 25, 2009 3:20 PM MDT reply actions

I didn't think they would actually do this

They seemed confident about CarGo’s return soon, but Fowler’s may not seem good. As long as they are ready for the playoffs, it’s fine.

I agree

It’s a bummer, as Dex and CarGon had been playing well—the sort of thing we probably envisioned in spring training.

But we know Spilly can handle center, Murton can play a little as well. Smith will likely get more AB’s. And the team has the depth to be able to cover for them. Hawpe, Iannetta, etc: time to step up.

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

UPDATE

From Ringolsby in the comments section of the above linked article

A player on the 15-day disabled list must be out at least 15 days, and that is not impacted by Sept. 1. One thing the Rockies are looking at is whether they could merely option Fowler to Triple-A, instead of placing him on the disabled list. A player is required to spend 10 days in the minors before he can be recalled, but that would allow Fowler to return five days earlier than if he was placed on the disabled list.

by sg8335aa on Aug 25, 2009 3:59 PM MDT reply actions

I think the question becomes whether he really needs 2 weeks to get healthy or if simply a week is enough.

by sg8335aa on Aug 25, 2009 4:02 PM MDT up reply actions

me too, if he's already lost to us for these next two series,

Then it’s not going to make a big difference to also lose him against the Mets/Reds/Padres at Coors. As long as he’s back the next time we go to SF after that, that would be the next critical part of the schedule.

by Rox Girl on Aug 25, 2009 4:03 PM MDT up reply actions

Yes, especially if CarGo is back by Thursday

We won’t lose much in OF defense over that time, and Dex is way too valuable to risk serious long-term knee damage. If we didn’t have Murton/Spilly available, I’d be less inclined to go slow, but our OF should be almost fine for the most part over the next 15 days.

Would that mean exercising one of his option years?

I guess it probably doesn’t matter with Dex, as it seems that he is ready to stick in the majors and won’t need to be sent to the minors. I’m just trying to understand the rule.

by RoxnSox09 on Aug 25, 2009 4:07 PM MDT up reply actions

It probably would

But it would be his first one, and he’s obviously ready for the majors with what we’ve seen this year.

Yes it would...

In my opinion, Fowler won’t be ready to come back after 15 days anyway—I’m thinking three weeks.

“It’ll be hard for the Rockies to maintain that 51-22 pace for the rest of a season.” Wait, a pace is 2 weeks or a month, The Rox have done this for HALF a season. I believe a trend has been established, and if we’ve plateaued, this “pace” should be enough to win us the division.

So the Dodgers 18-19 after the All-Star break isn’t indicative of their current potential?

Yup, it's all bias.

Fact is, they haven’t maintained a 51-22 pace. They have been playing great – 19-11 in their last 30, 24-13 since the break, but since those “streaks” usually date back to the 16 of 17 run, of course the pace is off.

I've heard that

when rookies (who haven’t yet had their MLB debut) are initially called up, the team will try to get the debut out of the way as quick as possible, so as not to let the kid’s nerves run while he just watches everyone else.

11 pitchers

Another comment from Tracy in the above linked article (in the comment section) Sounds like Rincon is the guy who will get the call if needed.

Karl, they have Matt Herges to step in after Fogg. And if Herges has to pitch on Wednesday, remember Colorado Springs is at home. If the Rockies decided they needed another pitcher, they could recall Rincon from his medical rehab assignment and activate him. My guess is he would be in the clubhouse in plenty of time for Thursday’s game. He has been working out with the big league team when it is home in between rehab assignments.
Key is Eaton wasn’t available tonight, anyhow, given he pitched yesterday so for at least one day you add another offensive option. If the pitching staff gets stretched tonight or tomorrow then they make the move with the Springs.

Dex

Will he be eligible for the postseason due to this move? By my reckoning, he would not be on the roster as of September 1st, and we have no outfielders on the 60 day DL for him to replace (only pitchers).

Am I missing something, or did we lose Dex for the postseason?

He'll be eligible

For that case the 15-day DL is just like the active roster, I believe.

The postseason roster is open to all 25 players on the active roster, and anyone on the 15 day DL on Sept 1

A link on post season eligibility

Here’s a link to one site that tries to explain post season eligibility.

Sorry about the confusion above – I did find a reference to the 15 day DL disappearing in September, but it’s definitely sketchy. There are transactions in September, which makes that incorrect. However, I don’t understand the point of moving someone to the15 day DL after Sept 1st – it doesn’t open a spot on the 40 man roster. Does anyone have a theory?
