Game #129 Overflow: Shaking the run stick for some mojo here.

Rockies still searching for runs, still running into outs. Not a good way to conjure up a win so far, but Ubaldo's keeping us in this thing.

Why does it surprise you?

I think that’s been one of the biggest keys for the Rockies offense this year, working on the pitchers pitch counts.

by amoeba on Aug 28, 2009 9:31 PM MDT up reply actions

Yes it has.

But it also has SEEMED (clearly as an illusion) that we love to swing at the first pitch too.

by Greg Stanwood on Aug 28, 2009 9:33 PM MDT up reply actions

Isn't that fundamental?

I mean, I just played little league, but I seem to recall getting an eye on the first pitch was pretty much the way you should do it.

Would you care about his attitude if he was producing?

His attitude is quite frankly congruent with every player on this team, except maybe Tulo, Yorvit, CarGo and Dexter.

prove his attitutde

He’s a quiet person, you don’t know he doesn’t have an incredibly positive attitude.

This is his 2nd year starting, maybe it’s just a sophomore slump (relatively, stay with me here).

If he’s tanking after 2010, I’ll concede the point, but still argue that he’s an average offensive catcher, as in we could do worse

Indeed...I almost saw a sophomore slump coming

until you taught me how patient he is and I figured he’d walk through slumps. It’s a big slump, and who knows whether 2008 or 2009 are more who he is, but they both count the same.

No one is denying it has been a massive disappointment

The only difference is you’re ready to write him off for one season even though he had the best season in franchise history for a catcher last year. We’re willing to see what happens after the sophomore slump. It has nothing to do with a “man crush” and more to do with common sense.

I guess my point is this...

It is not like this is a slump….he is hitting .220….220!!! That is not a slump. He has had very few hot streaks and they havent lasted long. He is hitting Atkins like, but at his age should be ramping up, not down.

Also, you’ll lose me every time if Avg is your main argument. It is way too low for his BB and SLG skills to overcome it, but only by about 30 points. Ryan Howard didn’t hit better than .220 for over three months last year….

Average catcher in the NL is batting .253/.323/.385

Meaning that Iannetta doesn’t hit as many weak singles, he walks more and hits for doubles or HR’s more than an average NL catcher. He’s doing better than average in an off year, and you want to send him sailing. Brilliant.

by Sandlotkid8 on Aug 28, 2009 10:14 PM MDT up reply actions

That's true, but that doesn't mean the defense is irrational

It’s because so many people want him replaced with Torrealba or Phillips or McKenry, which are nonsensical kneejerk moves. No one here has him on a pedestal. But he’s at least an average MLB catcher. You’re not going to find someone better.

You say “Iannetta is having a terrible year and I worry what we’ll get from him in the future” and everyone will agree with you.

You say “He’s joined the lists of horrible flameout backstops and needs replaced now” and you’ll get a wave of defense, because those statements just are not right.

"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein

by Andrew T. Fisher on Aug 28, 2009 10:20 PM MDT up reply actions

you're rooting for him?

You just declared him a bust, dude. It doesn’t work that easily.

We defend him because he’s maintaining his skillsets while a more variable aspect of batting is what’s dragging him down.

We defend him because the “batting average trumps all” mindset is the one attacking him, and the advanced evaluation has basically established that guys like Adam Dunn and Pat Burrell – guys with similar skillsets to Iannetta’s – have proven their offensive value, yet still are reviled by the Joe Morgan types because “they don’t bat .300 these guys clearly aren’t premier bats!”

Basically, Iannetta is our version of Dunn or Cust or Burrell, and I personally can’t handle people not understanding the value there and simply writing it off

This is exactly like a debate I (and others) had re: de la Rosa with Narcoleptico

He cited his record (he was 0-6) and that he was blown up several times. Looking a little deeper, we knew he was pitching a lot better and would improve. And he did. Batting average is like citing wins and losses almost.

I wonder if you DFA someone for the purpose of putting them on optional waivers, then the gentlemen’s agreement kicks in. Or that the waivers are revocable (as I believe optional waivers usu. are).

Or is it really the case no one wanted him.

It couldn’t look much worse than it does in the last couple weeks. I know we all think the world of Lincecum, but I for one think Jimenez has better stuff and as you mentioned this atrocious Giants offense has 2 runs off him, w/out Molina. I’m sorry but the offense better figure it out soon or it might be too late.

Is there something Baylor is teaching that leads to these large K numbers

and what I mean is we have been more patient, maybe too patient, or is this just a product of the hitters in our lineup right now.

It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

by smokinRox on Aug 28, 2009 10:41 PM MDT reply actions

I'm guessing scouting plays a role

Iannetta, Stewie and barmes can all be pitched to. As for Hawpe, he’s always been streaky and we’re seeing the downside right now.

Mix that in with CarGo and Fowler, who were really igniting things at the top of the order, going down and you’ve got a recipe for where we are now.

by BroJB on Aug 28, 2009 10:43 PM MDT up reply actions
