Rockies taken down a notch by Lincecum and Giants, lose 2-0
Tim Lincecum pitched eight shutout innings, shooting down any threat the Rockies were able to mount. Pablo Sandoval hit a solo home run off Ubaldo Jimenez and Eugenio Velez later added a run scoring single. Juan Uribe tripled and scored in the eighth off of Matt Daley, forcing me to add this sentence to something that was already pretty neat and tidy. Oh wait, Daley got out of that, never mind. Nice job, rook. Brian Wilson got the save.
The Rockies need to score more. Preferably starting tomorrow.

Wait?
Fangraph actually thought there were three times in this game when the Rockies had the better chance of winning?
Fangraph must have been hittin’ dad’s liquor cabinet.

Fangraphs don't differentiate between talent level on either side or the pitching matchup
Basically, with the score tied, if we had anyone on base in the top of the inning, particularly in scoring position, we were halfway to leading, which is better than nothing.

don’t put the strain on his arm. He uses his whole body, to produce the power and then he just puts the hex on the ball :)

by WolfMarauder on Aug 29, 2009 1:26 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Ask Don Mattingly.
Or Jason Giambi, he’ll be in town soon.
You’ll note that the connection between those two comes from New York, in the form of George Steinbrenner and his ridiculous edicts about “Yankee Pride”.
Not too proud to halt rampant juicing, apparently, but wayward hair – that’s where they draw the line!
Personally, I think Todd Helton’s only gotten better the longer his hair has grown.

tough way to lose for Baldo
Baldo had two bad hitters I thought; Bad pitch selection on 0-2 to Sandoval when not one Giants hitter could catch his fastball tonight. and of course the walk to Whiteside. Yes, Velez got the hit but Whiteside is the second out of the inning with Lincecum at the plate.

I agree, he's the only hitter in the lineup right now
however he was 0-2, and just made a pitch that was not very good. It needed to be way down and then come back w/ a fastball up and I think he would have had a great chance to get him out. He just left the pitch up and paid for it, but all in all he pitched well.

My prediciton for....
…what George frazier will be saying at the end of the next three games:
Saturday: “You gotta tip your cap to Barry Zito and go after it tomorrow”
Sunday: “You gotta tip your cap to Matt Cain and go after it Tuesday”
Tuesday: “You gotta tip your cap to Mike Pelfrey and go after it tomorrow”
and on it goes.

3 straight big series back to back to back
with the middle one against the Dodgers, who they’ve got a major block against.
They have been known to press at the plate in big games.

We got whooped.
Ubaldo was pretty good, but no question that Mitch Kramer was the better man tonight. Helton is the only dude who didn’t look overmatched at the dish. And Tulo’s baserunning, dear lord man. I don’t know how fast he thinks he is…but he needs to reassess.

Well, that was a bummer.
The ballpark was LOUD. Which can be fun if you’re rooting along with the crowd, but not so much when you’re in the minority.
Highlight of the night was definitely Todd’s awesome defensive play. A lot of Giants fans even applauded. There was a tv screen above where I was sitting showing the Giants broadcast and they replayed it probably 4-5 times from different angles.
Lowlight (besides Giant runs and the loss) was the pop double. Good grief. I couldn’t see the ball from where I was so I was only watching the players, but it seemed to me like once it started tailing away from CDI, Ubaldo should have called for it. But I’ve never played, so I don’t really know the protocol there. Someone failed, though.
Hopefully tomorrow is a different story.
by holly96 on Aug 29, 2009 1:19 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
I think the pitcher is actually taught to stay out of the way
I remember a great highlight catch from yonder days when Gaylord Perry was on the hill looking around with his palms up for his fielders. All of a sudden an infielder comes diving in to make the catch.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
by FooMan on Aug 29, 2009 10:56 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
That could very well be.
But once it actually dropped, Ubaldo seemed in the best position to me. It’s probably ultimately CDI’s fault, but he did have to drift quite a bit as it tailed away from him.
by holly96 on Aug 29, 2009 11:23 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not much to say about that game
The pitchers can’t hold the runners…
Men on base running into outs…
A 10ft DOUBLE?
Okay, the Rockies beat Lincecum at home and the Giants beat Ubaldo at home.
Over the two matchups, it comes out to .500. Most teams this year would be happy to have a home and home against the Freak and come out .500.
Someone please tell Ubaldo to give the base runner a little look before throwing the pitch. Please… Velez stole the base on Ubaldo because he never even looked over. There is nothing CDI can do about that one…
The oxen are slow, but the earth is patient.

That 10 foot double
Got me real angry. Let’s hope we bounce back and win next two, thus effectively ending the Giant’s playoff aspirations…
