He poisons team chemistry, remember?

He’s going down, and taking Lincecain with him. That’s what I’ll keep telling myself, anyway.

Seriously though, I hope they get the inconsistent, high pitch count version and not the version that was actually decent in May/June (3.74 ERA, 3:1 K/BB ratio).

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

If the Rockies are right about Penny

(and they had better be), this will be a positive move for the Rockies. Though I suppose he couldn’t do a whole lot worse than Joe Martinez.

that's kind of the point

I wanted to see Martinez or Lowry or whoever (is Lowry out for the season?) get knocked around every 5th start

At this point, I don't believe we do for sure

but they optioned Joe Martinez down last week and haven’t filled his spot in the rotation as of yet. Randy Johnson will return from the 60day, but he will be in the bullpen for the rest of the year if he does indeed come back to the 25man. Signs seem to indicate he would be used in the rotation

It is really sad

He looked like he had a real bright future and it wasn’t even a big arm injury that set off the downward spiral – it was a strained oblique. He was just never the same pitcher after it (even when he had a sub-4 ERA in 2007, he had an ugly 1:1 K/BB ratio). That’s the nature of young pitchers though, what can you do?

I don't think anyone's in the Raider levels of lost.

At least the Broncos don’t have the owner dictating play calling or the coach maiming his assistants.

by holly96 on Aug 31, 2009 9:54 PM MDT up reply actions

Yep! Bad year to be a Broncos fan, for sure

Additionally, I can only hope that, one of these years, a nail-biter of a playoff race involving the Rockies will get more attention here than a meaningless preseason game from a team that looks to be 4-12 if they get some lucky breaks. I don’t even need the front page of the Post. Just some proportion. :)

Opinion of a Giants fan

Nothing the Giants can do will really counter the fact that you guys have one of the smartest offenses ever constructed. It will be a tight race, but I have to believe the Rockies, who have A+ hitting and maybe B pitching, are favored over the Giants, who have D+ hitting and A+ pitching.

At any rate, let the September games begin…

by hairball on Aug 31, 2009 3:41 PM MDT reply actions

Why do the Rockies have one of the smartest offenses ever constructed?

I would actually grade the Rockies’ pitching as better than the hitting, considering park effects. I think you’re a little generous for both offenses.

Simple: your players understand OBP better than any other NL team

And they use it to achieve other things, like power.

by hairball on Aug 31, 2009 4:01 PM MDT up reply actions

A lot of the problems we're having is we're getting the former but not the latter

at least at the same time. We walk and then just can’t hit the damn ball anymore. I know there are obviously places these past few weeks where yeah, we did score some runs. But for the most part, we’re leaving small villages on the basepaths and we’re getting leadoff doubles for our power

That's what has doomed the A's, to a degree

It’s the trade-off, but man, I would love to have that be the Giants’ problem, instead of all this first-pitch out-made BS!

"The BB's are out. The BB's are being arseholes to me." - Brian Wilson.

by hairball on Sep 1, 2009 11:26 AM MDT up reply actions

no, what has doomed the A's

is the fact that everyone else has picked up on advanced evaluation and put money into the guys they SHOULD be putting money into

So basically Oakland just has to operate like any other small market team and make smart trades and drafts.

given the 30th to 1st ranking disparity in that stat. Taking a lot of pitches also increases your chances for the ultimate non-productive out though. We’re 3rd in Ks, but I don’t guess I’m jealous of the team that avoids K’s the best.

Rockies starting to get active?

According to this MLBTR author, the Rockies may be one of two teams making a late hard push at Garland. Garland actually may fit in quite well here with his pitching style, and Apodaca’s ability to take solid sinker guys and make them GB machines.

This isn’t a story until we have more credible sources, but it’s fun rumor mill fodder nonetheless.

I don't think so

considering the amount of DL spots the Rockies have to play with, but at the same time, if the Rockies are competing with someone for his services, than you have to consider that tonight could be someone else’s deadline, meaning that Arizona could look to move him now or hang on to him.

A player has to be in your organization

by the end of the day on August 31st to be able to make the team through the 60-day DL loophole.

If that is so, who do we bring up? I’d only say two names for sure..Giambi and Murton. I’m not sure about anybody else..Pineiro maybe.

If we had Joel Piniero, we’d be in business. He’s been very valuable this year. Maybe you mean Peralta?

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

by FooMan on Aug 31, 2009 10:30 PM MDT up reply actions

WHAT??????

no way…..

Either the Rockies have no faith in Hynick as a major leaguer, or they really think Contreras has a lot to offer.

Personally I’d rather have Hynick then Contreras.

Wow…..

by Redhawk on Aug 31, 2009 10:29 PM MDT up reply actions

They probably needed something to get Chicago to send money

Contreras 2009 salary is $10 million, so that’s a $2million insurance policy. And Hynick is pretty expendable given all the other back end rotation possibilities they have laying around.

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

by FooMan on Aug 31, 2009 10:31 PM MDT up reply actions

Yes

of all the back end rotation prospects the Rockies have, Hynick was the closest.

And Contreras is old, and very, very washed up. I don’t want to see him on the mound at all for the Rockies.

by Redhawk on Aug 31, 2009 10:34 PM MDT up reply actions

But that's all he was

a back end prospect. I take it that most people that are really unhappy to see Hynick go are people that actually haven’t seen him pitch before.

I don’t know if Hynick was worth giving up for a month or two of Contreras (ok, he’s not), but it wasn’t like we just gave up a young Aaron Cook. Hynick’s path to the bigs just got that much tougher moving to the AL in a similarly unfriendly homer park.

by David OhNo on Aug 31, 2009 10:40 PM MDT up reply actions

Hynick can hit pretty well huh?

Yep, it’s definitely going to be tougher for him now.

by CentralCaliRox on Aug 31, 2009 10:41 PM MDT up reply actions

More importantly, what does this do to the Purps list?

It’s not Hynick’s fault the list hasn’t been compiled yet!

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

by FooMan on Aug 31, 2009 10:32 PM MDT up reply actions
