As the Dodgers bulk up with Thome and Garland and the Giants get a roughed up Penny.

Huh. Interesting.

Not very intriguing, but I guess it’s something. The guy has postseason experience, but he’s been bad this year.

As far as the Thome comment, while it seems like a big move right now, the Rockies did acquire a pretty good left-handed bat in a guy named Jason Giambi.

Uh, really no comparison there.

Giambi in 2009: .193/.332/.364
Thome: .252/.375/.499

Giambi’s clearly washed up. Thome at least has something left.

Sad as it is, Contreras may be our best option in the fifth slot going forward.

Yeah, but

You have to factor in the fact that Giambi did that playing in freaking Oakland, and he’s just going to be a late bat here. I’d be very, very surprised if he makes one start for the Rockies. I don’t care if he goes 2-20 in September if those two hits are late-inning homers.

True

Still, though, .193 is pretty sad.

It is

I could see Giambi really helping, particularly in the 10-game stretch coming up, though. The Rockies won’t be facing any really great pitching outside of possibly Danny Haren.

I hope that we didn't give up much more than Alan Johnson

It’s tough to figure how a 5.42 ERA will help in the stretch run

We gave up Brandon Hynick

for Jose Freakin Contreras? Seriously, DOD?

I'm not as high on Hynick as a lot are

Perfect game notwithstanding, he’s gotten worse every year in the minors. Granted, the Texas League is tough for pitchers, but if he ever came up, I don’t think he was ever going to be more than a 5th starter for the Rockies at best, and probably not even that. He had one excellent year in Modesto, but he’s been nothing other than mediocre in AA and AAA. With guys like Chacin, Friedrich, Rogers, and Matzek in the system, along with the core of Jimenez and Morales with the big club, Hynick gets lost to the numbers game.

Oh, and we missed out on Garland

This has been such a frustrating week to be a Rockies fan.
