Colorado Rockies Acquire Jose Contreras
At the postseason-roster and waiver trade deadline tonight, the Colorado Rockies acquired SP Jose Contreras from the Chicago White Sox, according to Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman.
According to Mark Gonzalez of the Chicago Tribune, the Rockies are sending AAA pitcher Brandon Hynick in exchange for Contreras.
The White Sox are sending an undisclosed amount of cash to complete the trade.
With starter Aaron Cook on the DL, the Rockies have been looking for a 5th man to fill the rotation as they continue toward the postseason.
From a financial standpoint, Contreras is in the final year of a deal that pays him $10 million this season--$2.7 million left on the year (meaning that with the White Sox's payment the Rockies will likely be on the hook for about $1.5-2 million in return for Contreras' services).

Well. Okay.
It didn’t sound like a lot of people here were optimistic about Hynick’s chances with the Rockies, but this isn’t exactly the deal I’d like to see him go in.
Hasn’t Jose Contreras kind of struggled lately?
One thing on Fangraphs stuck out to me
His manager said this about him
“We are in the position right now where we can’t continue to handle guys and hope they get it done,” Guillen said. “I feel for him, but our job is to win games and not to do people favors. We cannot handle this anymore.” said about him being sent to the bullpen instead of starting.

In semi-related news
The Dodgers reportedly get Jim Thome
And we get Giambi and Contreras
Sort of equivalent
The Dodgers make 2 good trades
and we make a terrible one. In O’Dowd’s defense, he doesn’t make many bad trades.
Why do you think the Contreras deal is a terrible deal?
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
because...
While Hynick only projects to being a #4 or a #5, he throws strikes and can have a serviceable major league career. Contreras is a rent-a-player for a month to fill a need for an injury. I won’t be surprised if he doesn’t give us one quality start, and we end up giving up a young guy who might have been able to fill a role for us down the line. I don’t see Contreras as a considerable upgrade to Fogg or Ortiz.
Can't judge to quick (Like I did)
Hynick may never amount to anything, and Contreras may end up being valuable. Who knows?

So, that's a 3rd roster spot
Giambi, Contreras, Phillips. 3 need to be removed/moved to the 60-day DL now.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
Right
Even with expanded rosters, you’re still only allowed 40 players on the 40-man roster. Giambi, Contreras, and Phillips are not on it right now, so somebody will have to be dropped to make room.
Are you referring to the Playoff roster
or the expanded September roster?
Guesses
Bellorin will obviously go. I can’t see the Rockies putting Cook on the 60-day, on the off chance that he is able to come back and pitch in the playoffs.
People were guessing Reynolds could be put on the ML 60-day DL
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
Ringolsby
You can start with the idea that if they do not recall Adam Eaton and Edwin Bellorin, those are two spots they could open.
Also with season-ending injuries to Chris Nelson, Greg Reynolds and Greg Smith, the Rockies could recall them and move them to the 60-day disabled list, which would allow spots to open.
Patrick Saunders: I think Kruk is lazy.
Not a terrible deal
Let’s not get too attached to Hynick… he’s really just a #4/5 starter type, and at the very least acquiring Contreras means that the Rockies won’t be having Russ Ortiz start.
yeah

i dont care about what we gave up
I care that we are going to entrust pennant race starts to a guy who can most charitably be described as “not technically a corpse yet.” and yeah, yeah, I remember Elmer Dessens and Ramon Ortiz and all those jokers we ran out there in 07, but this ain’t 07. asking price
the reason the asking price was higher for Garland is because he isn’t the worst pitcher in baseball, and Contreras is.
and when Penny owns the Rox like he always does in San Fran in two weeks, you think the Giants will give a damn if he’s a jerkface?

Besides the point.
Penny was already off the table, and the asking price for Garland was too high… never mind that the Diamondbacks are in our division, so if we give up a real prospect to get Garland and said prospect turns into a decent player, that hurts us a lot more if he’s going to a divisional rival rather than an AL team.
Aside from that… seriously, if we don’t acquire Contreras, we’re giving starts to Adam Eaton or Russ Ortiz, who can also be described as “not technically a corpse yet.” Acquiring Contreras does not change this.
eaton and ortiz were free
contreras cost us a prospect. If i have to run the pu-pu platter out every five days, I would prefer it cost me no talent in return.

I heard
That Jose Contreras dropped a peice of syrup-covered pancake on the ground in the dirt outside, left it there for more than 10 seconds, and even though like 5 people were watching him he still ate it.
I also heard that he fails to preheat the oven before cooking his frozen pizzas so they always come out soft and dough-y.

The guy has had an absolutly terrible August
And was demoted to the pen last week. Was Hynick amazing, no. But was he worth more than this clunker, yes.
Does anyone feel they probably could get a better start out of Hynick?
Meh.
Hynick doesn’t do anything particularly well — he doesn’t strike people out and he doesn’t get grounders. Plus you’re throwing in the fact that he’s never pitched in the majors before, so there are going to be butterflies. Yes, there’s a chance he could have a good start or even string together a few good ones down the stretch, but there’s also a good chance he gets shelled. While there’s a chance that Contreras would as well, there’s a better chance he’ll be an effective pitcher than Hynick. Not that the chances of that are very good, but…
DFA murton and trading hynick..curious moves
at worst these are cost controlled depth guys…hynick with his control and plus breaking stuff could be a solid pitcher eentually
Contreras...
…NOT Spanish for “Garland”. I can only hope the Mouth of the South (Side) is his usual bad judge of things baseball…but somehow, I don’t think so. Crap.

What are we gonna do with all these towels
monogrammed with “JJ”?
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
I was thinking
JJ’s probably gone after this year anyway and Hirsh and Buchholz are better than what we would get with the compensation picks.
I'll be honest
I had never heard of Hirsh and didn’t even know what compensation picks were. So I was more like RMN’s reaction. Admittedly, I have followed the nuances of the game behind the game a lot closer.

Good point...
But then I look at how long Tom Martin was allowed to pitch for the Rockies and I die a little inside.

Can we just say...
We picked up a has-been for a probably-never-will-be? Maybe this works out, maybe not. Give Contreras a start or two. Seems a low-risk, low reward move to me. And if Brandon Hynick’s career takes off, then great for him.
My thoughts exactly.
There’s an off chance that Hynick does develop into something, but the odds are much greater that the rumored Nicasio-for-Garland trade would come back to bite us than this will.
Wow.
Good planning. We scheduled SnakePitFest for Jon Garland’s last ever start as a Diamondback.

Well.
Hynick was pitching well in arguably the best hitter’s park professional baseball has ever seen, and the Rox traded him for a guy who is quite possibly really 55 years old.
I’m interested to see the WAR figures, RMN. Assuming they’re as positive as you’re leading on, that and the fact that DOD has a history of generally knowing what he’s doing are the only things keeping me from being pissed off about this deal.

I'm going on a wait and see attitude.
Everyone around here was all doom and gloom when the Cardinals picked up Smoltz, saying that it was a stupid idea and how he was still going to suck and blow games. But so far, he’s done better than his numbers with Boston indicated.
Sometimes all it takes is a little change in scenery and clubhouse atmosphere to turn your game around. If he knew that the White Sox manager was frustrated with him, maybe he was trying too hard to do better and that caused him to make some mistakes. That’s why I’m just going to wait and see how he does before I make judgement on the trade.

A lot of heat and passion
over four remaining starts. Contreras/Ortiz/Fogg….who cares. Get some runs, play some defense, and let the bullpen put out the fires they start. Frankly, I’m more concerned about getting a W tonight.

Contreras sucks
This is dumb.
The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.
Its absolutely a desperation move
and one the DOD doesn’t usually make. I have actually been behind almost all the deals he has made, especially once I found out who we were losing. I still like Connor Graham more than most, but even that move was ok. I don’t like this one at all. It just seems like we are trying to do something to keep up w/ the Giants and Dodgers and this was not it. This is worse than doing nothing IMO. Hynick may have been a #4/#5 type but he did pitch very well in CSC, and found a way to get it done. I’m with an earlier poster, I think he would have as much chance of giving us a quality start as Contreras does down the stretch. A desperate, desperate move!
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
Also correct me if I'm wrong here
but wouldn’t we just have to pay some salary to acquire Penny, not give up any players at all? If thats right, why would we not have tried to get Penny over Contreras. Maybe we did and he went w/ the Giants, but all indicators are saying we did not even go after him.
I will happily eat crow if Contreras pitches better than Penny, or even if he pitches better than Clay Counsil.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

I don't get why everyone wanted Penny so bad...
That guy’s a dickhead and wouldn’t fit in with the team well at all. Sabermetrics and all this other BS aside, there’s still something to be said about team chemistry, and having a diva like that around does just about as much good as bringing in a 55-year old wash up.
Maybe I’m just old school.
Just an average guy with exceptional hair. Nothing more, nothing less.
by Bryan Kilpatrick on Sep 1, 2009 8:15 AM MDT up reply actions
I would rather have neither
but if I had to have one of the 2, it would be Penny. We aren’t asking the guy to be a Rockies’ lifer, just make a few starts down the stretch. I think he knows the opinion on him and my guess is he’ll be on his best behavior, he only has to behave himself for a month. I think the Giants are getting the better pitcher is all I’m saying, I hope I’m wrong.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.
I see where you're coming from,
but I think I’m in agreement with TOGB. The better pitcher for the Rockies is going to be the one who doesn’t hurt our chances to make the playoffs. This extends beyond has who has better numbers to a pitcher’s rapport and attitude with everyone else. I think in this way Contreras is a much better fit for our team.
That being said, I personally am holding back further criticism about this trade until I see results. I want to see that Jose Contreras is a more consistent option than what we’ve already got before I decide for sure whether he was worth a Purp who made it into most peoples’ top 30.
Where are you getting this about Penny?
There were concerns about team chemistry. He wore out his welcome in LA. Is it because he had a caustic personality, or because he was viewed as lazy and unable/unwilling to reach his potential? Sounds like it’s more the latter to me. He had a run in with a notorious hard-ass coach, Larry Bowa. He was said to be well-liked by teammates in Boston.
If the Rockies are so fragile they could be done in by Penny, they have no shot. Old school hysterics and other BS aside.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
Well, we can have a new game here on the 'Row
“How old is Contreras really?”
For those that don’t know, Contreras has been accused of lieing about his age, when he defected and came to America from Cuba. But no one knows for sure. Right now he says he’s 38, but rumors have him much, much older.
So…How old is Contreras? I’m going with 44

Here is what Chicago Tribune says this morning about Contreras trade...
“And it might be even more stunning that the Sox got a live arm in return for Jose Contreras. I wouldn’t have guessed we’d get anyone with a pulse.”
Seriously.
Hynick isn't exaclty a "live arm"
I suppose it is an alive arm though

Yeah, that's the point
Contreras is a good guy, so I read, and O’Dowd doesn’t do anything without thinking things through. So, I am putting my trust that he has spent more than the 15 minutes that I have looking at numbers. He and Tracy, I am sure, thoroughly discussed Hynick’s abilities and know that Co Springs is a hitter’s park, that Contreras is older than the Rockies with really bad numbers, etc.
To me it looks as if we just traded away a player with some hope in the upcoming years of improving (as bullpen or starter) for someone who the clock has stopped ticking and no one wants to put out the garbage when you are still paying millions for the guy.
Desperation time come on!
Oi, I really hope I’m wrong and this doesn’t turn out like the Livan Hernandez Experience last year. But… I’m a follower of the AL Central since my AL team is the Twinkies. We’re talking some pretty mediocre pitching once you get past number 1 & 2 starters and he was dropped from the white sox rotation…oh, dear.

I agree....
O’Dowd’s trade history is pretty good when you look at his trades of established players for prospects (Jennings, Holliday), but the track record is mixed, at best, when acquiring washed-up old pitchers. I know there have been some successes, but at least an equal number of spectacular failures—Livan Hernandez is a good example, so is Adam Eaton, so is Kip Wells, so is Elmer Dessens, so is Ramon Ortiz.
I think I would have felt more comfortable with several internal options (even Hynick might give the Rockies what they could get out of Contreras). I know that Hynick projects to be a back-end pitcher, but what does Contreras project to be these days.

Old.
Staying on the sunny side of Blake Street since 1993.
The Shawn Chacon Experience - Life as a Rockies fan, one day at a time: Because we're all still recovering from those nine blown saves.
Hmm
He isn’t terrible, or at least not if you look at full season numbers. He has a FIP of 4.12 and he has been a little unlucky with BABIP. The spike in fly balls is a bit concerning though…
But he has to better than Fogg/Ortiz/Eaton, right? And Hynick to me is a back end pitcher, despite great minor league numbers, whose role in the organization could be filled by someone like like Weiser
Maybe
he just needs a Spanish speaking catcher (Torrealba) to tell him to throw good and he will suddenly become good.
There’s a chance that he may surprise some NL hitters seeing him for the first time, and as others have mentioned, Cook and his replacements haven’t exactly had stellar outings for the past few starts.
It looks like his first start will be against the DBacks, who always seem to give us problems, and have been playing better lately. If he gets hit around a lot, at least we’ll have the same bullpen staff that provided some July 4th batting practice to the snakes. As long as you’re going to lose, it might as well be a blowout, right?
well that and AJ Pierzynski is a giant [redacted]

I mean come on, would you respect your catcher if he got clobbered by Michael Barrett?

He IS a decent pitcher, though, even if none of his “I’m going to win the Cy Young this year” predictions ever come true. (Which I hope they don’t)

Contreras's overall results vs. FIP
He has a FIP of 4.12 and he has been a little unlucky with BABIP
I’m sure RMN will cover this, but remember, FIP abstracts from everything but strikeouts, walks, and HR’s allowed. A major reason behind Contreras’s big gap between ERA and FIP is that he’s been getting torched with runners on. He’s also allowed a huge number of unearned runs, possibly for the same reason. Hence the 5.42 ERA, and 6.51 runs allowed/9.
Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
