Colorado Rockies Acquire Jose Contreras

At the postseason-roster and waiver trade deadline tonight, the Colorado Rockies acquired SP Jose Contreras from the Chicago White Sox, according to Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman.

According to Mark Gonzalez of the Chicago Tribune, the Rockies are sending AAA pitcher Brandon Hynick in exchange for Contreras.

The White Sox are sending an undisclosed amount of cash to complete the trade.

With starter Aaron Cook on the DL, the Rockies have been looking for a 5th man to fill the rotation as they continue toward the postseason.

From a financial standpoint, Contreras is in the final year of a deal that pays him $10 million this season--$2.7 million left on the year (meaning that with the White Sox's payment the Rockies will likely be on the hook for about $1.5-2 million in return for Contreras' services).

One thing on Fangraphs stuck out to me

His manager said this about him

“We are in the position right now where we can’t continue to handle guys and hope they get it done,” Guillen said. “I feel for him, but our job is to win games and not to do people favors. We cannot handle this anymore.” said about him being sent to the bullpen instead of starting.

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

by FooMan on Aug 31, 2009 11:00 PM MDT up reply actions

because...

While Hynick only projects to being a #4 or a #5, he throws strikes and can have a serviceable major league career. Contreras is a rent-a-player for a month to fill a need for an injury. I won’t be surprised if he doesn’t give us one quality start, and we end up giving up a young guy who might have been able to fill a role for us down the line. I don’t see Contreras as a considerable upgrade to Fogg or Ortiz.

You can start with the idea that if they do not recall Adam Eaton and Edwin Bellorin, those are two spots they could open.
Also with season-ending injuries to Chris Nelson, Greg Reynolds and Greg Smith, the Rockies could recall them and move them to the 60-day disabled list, which would allow spots to open.

Devaris Gordon

Lindblom is #5 on Sickels’ Dodgers top 20, Gordon is #6, so that’s in the ballpark.

Besides the point.

Penny was already off the table, and the asking price for Garland was too high… never mind that the Diamondbacks are in our division, so if we give up a real prospect to get Garland and said prospect turns into a decent player, that hurts us a lot more if he’s going to a divisional rival rather than an AL team.

Aside from that… seriously, if we don’t acquire Contreras, we’re giving starts to Adam Eaton or Russ Ortiz, who can also be described as “not technically a corpse yet.” Acquiring Contreras does not change this.

That Jose Contreras dropped a peice of syrup-covered pancake on the ground in the dirt outside, left it there for more than 10 seconds, and even though like 5 people were watching him he still ate it.

I also heard that he fails to preheat the oven before cooking his frozen pizzas so they always come out soft and dough-y.

And was demoted to the pen last week. Was Hynick amazing, no. But was he worth more than this clunker, yes.

Does anyone feel they probably could get a better start out of Hynick?

by mkorpal on Aug 31, 2009 11:49 PM MDT reply actions

Meh.

Hynick doesn’t do anything particularly well — he doesn’t strike people out and he doesn’t get grounders. Plus you’re throwing in the fact that he’s never pitched in the majors before, so there are going to be butterflies. Yes, there’s a chance he could have a good start or even string together a few good ones down the stretch, but there’s also a good chance he gets shelled. While there’s a chance that Contreras would as well, there’s a better chance he’ll be an effective pitcher than Hynick. Not that the chances of that are very good, but…

I'm going on a wait and see attitude.

Everyone around here was all doom and gloom when the Cardinals picked up Smoltz, saying that it was a stupid idea and how he was still going to suck and blow games. But so far, he’s done better than his numbers with Boston indicated.

Sometimes all it takes is a little change in scenery and clubhouse atmosphere to turn your game around. If he knew that the White Sox manager was frustrated with him, maybe he was trying too hard to do better and that caused him to make some mistakes. That’s why I’m just going to wait and see how he does before I make judgement on the trade.

Its absolutely a desperation move

and one the DOD doesn’t usually make. I have actually been behind almost all the deals he has made, especially once I found out who we were losing. I still like Connor Graham more than most, but even that move was ok. I don’t like this one at all. It just seems like we are trying to do something to keep up w/ the Giants and Dodgers and this was not it. This is worse than doing nothing IMO. Hynick may have been a #4/#5 type but he did pitch very well in CSC, and found a way to get it done. I’m with an earlier poster, I think he would have as much chance of giving us a quality start as Contreras does down the stretch. A desperate, desperate move!

I think the Giants are getting the better pitcher is all I’m saying, I hope I’m wrong.

by smokinRox on Sep 1, 2009 8:20 AM MDT up reply actions

I see where you're coming from,

but I think I’m in agreement with TOGB. The better pitcher for the Rockies is going to be the one who doesn’t hurt our chances to make the playoffs. This extends beyond has who has better numbers to a pitcher’s rapport and attitude with everyone else. I think in this way Contreras is a much better fit for our team.

That being said, I personally am holding back further criticism about this trade until I see results. I want to see that Jose Contreras is a more consistent option than what we’ve already got before I decide for sure whether he was worth a Purp who made it into most peoples’ top 30.

by Justus on Sep 1, 2009 8:34 AM MDT up reply actions

Where are you getting this about Penny?

There were concerns about team chemistry. He wore out his welcome in LA. Is it because he had a caustic personality, or because he was viewed as lazy and unable/unwilling to reach his potential? Sounds like it’s more the latter to me. He had a run in with a notorious hard-ass coach, Larry Bowa. He was said to be well-liked by teammates in Boston.

If the Rockies are so fragile they could be done in by Penny, they have no shot. Old school hysterics and other BS aside.

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!

Yeah, that's the point

Contreras is a good guy, so I read, and O’Dowd doesn’t do anything without thinking things through. So, I am putting my trust that he has spent more than the 15 minutes that I have looking at numbers. He and Tracy, I am sure, thoroughly discussed Hynick’s abilities and know that Co Springs is a hitter’s park, that Contreras is older than the Rockies with really bad numbers, etc.

To me it looks as if we just traded away a player with some hope in the upcoming years of improving (as bullpen or starter) for someone who the clock has stopped ticking and no one wants to put out the garbage when you are still paying millions for the guy.

I agree....

O’Dowd’s trade history is pretty good when you look at his trades of established players for prospects (Jennings, Holliday), but the track record is mixed, at best, when acquiring washed-up old pitchers. I know there have been some successes, but at least an equal number of spectacular failures—Livan Hernandez is a good example, so is Adam Eaton, so is Kip Wells, so is Elmer Dessens, so is Ramon Ortiz.

I think I would have felt more comfortable with several internal options (even Hynick might give the Rockies what they could get out of Contreras). I know that Hynick projects to be a back-end pitcher, but what does Contreras project to be these days.

He isn’t terrible, or at least not if you look at full season numbers. He has a FIP of 4.12 and he has been a little unlucky with BABIP. The spike in fly balls is a bit concerning though…

But he has to better than Fogg/Ortiz/Eaton, right? And Hynick to me is a back end pitcher, despite great minor league numbers, whose role in the organization could be filled by someone like like Weiser

by moomacher on Sep 1, 2009 9:25 AM MDT reply actions

Maybe

he just needs a Spanish speaking catcher (Torrealba) to tell him to throw good and he will suddenly become good.

There’s a chance that he may surprise some NL hitters seeing him for the first time, and as others have mentioned, Cook and his replacements haven’t exactly had stellar outings for the past few starts.

It looks like his first start will be against the DBacks, who always seem to give us problems, and have been playing better lately. If he gets hit around a lot, at least we’ll have the same bullpen staff that provided some July 4th batting practice to the snakes. He has a FIP of 4.12 and he has been a little unlucky with BABIP

I’m sure RMN will cover this, but remember, FIP abstracts from everything but strikeouts, walks, and HR’s allowed. A major reason behind Contreras’s big gap between ERA and FIP is that he’s been getting torched with runners on. He’s also allowed a huge number of unearned runs, possibly for the same reason. Hence the 5.42 ERA, and 6.51 runs allowed/9.

Leave Dexter alone! You're lucky he even performs for you!
