Rockies 8, Phillies 3: Atkins, Rockies offense back Hammel's strong pitching performance
Dexter Fowler, Ryan Spilborghs, and Garrett Atkins had two hits apiece, and Jason Hammel tossed 6.2 innings of solid baseball as the Rockies defeated the Phillies 8-3.
Atkins had four runs batted in to go with his two hits and a walk. On an 0-2 pitch, he followed Spilborghs' 2-out single with a home run that stayed just inside the left field foul pole in the second inning. Then in the sixth inning, after Jimmy Rollins hit a 2-run blast of his own to cut the Rockies' lead to 4-2, Atkins smacked a double over the head of Shane Victorino that plated Spilborghs and Troy Tulowitzki. Two singles (by Chris Iannetta and Hammel) and a double (by Fowler) later, the Rox found themselves ahead by six runs. All of the hits in that big inning came at the expense of former Rockie Rodrigo Lopez, who is fighting to keep his job.
Hammel (6-6) allowed 3 runs on 9 hits and struck out 6 in a good bounce-back effort, after he failed to make it out of the second inning in his last outing. After allowing a couple of baserunners in the 7th, Jim Tracy called upon Joe Beimel to get out of the inning and he did just that, getting Chase Utley to fly out. He stayed in to pitch the 8th, and retired the Phillies in order. Jhoulys Chacin handled the ninth, and walked a batter, but he made two good hitters in Pedro Feliz and Jimmy Rollins look pretty silly while striking them out.

I, for one, wouldn't mind
one bit if the Rockies saw them again in the playoffs.
I enjoyed that thoroughly
We just need to get one more out of this series, and the trip is a success. It’ll make the Citi bellyflop rankle a bit more, but hey.
I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.
Starting with the lineup, that was a durn fine managing job done tonight.

oh yeah, this is awesome.
When was the last time a manager took over mid-season and had this good of a record? Phil Garner? Jack McKeon? This is CRAZY.

McKeon
Garner was 48-26, so Tracy is better. McKeon was 75-49, just over a .600 WP. Tracy is north of .667 right now, but has a long way to go for the same sampe size. Plus, theres that World Series thing

Yeah, what he did with the Fish was TRULY astounding.
Plus, he was like 70 at that point wasn’t he?

At least fans don't decide the awards
like they do the all-star game. We would get even less love from normal fans than we do from the BWAA…
We do for the SBN ones.

Sweet
Do the players receive these awards personally or are they the “make believe and read about it” type of awards?

More of the latter at the moment.
And just to clarify Rox Girl and I are the ones who receive a ballot.

we have he 2nd most wins in the league
and we had the 2nd worst record when he took over. If it holds this way, I cant see who else would get it.
Then again, August and Sept mean a lot

I'm really not sure who else to give it to
Usually one or two names jump out at me each year, but I really can’t think of a single other NL manager more deserving right now. Torre will get a lot of votes for how well the Dodgers have played, but there’s really no other manager in the league who has had a more profound impact on his team.

I'm sure Torre and the SF manager will get a lot of votes
But there is no doubt Tracy is much more deserving than them.
Forgot about Bochy
He deserves some votes for sure, especially winning that many games with that toothless of a lineup.

NL’s worst West is going to lead the voting? I could get used to this.

Can we call the NL East
the NL Weak? I mean, I hate kicking horses when they’re down, but I like it a lot better than the NL Worst.
Good job Rox
Kudos to Atty, Spilly and Hammel. Good game from all of them. Didn’t see most of it but I’ll be here tomorrow. GO ROCKIES!
Great game
Hammel suprised the heck out of me. I thought for sure this was a loss but he pitched pretty well. I think a lot of the reason we won can be atributed to father time on the mound for the Philies and their relief pitcher wasn’t the best either. Idk why but I have always liked Atkins and Spilly, I wish we could find them some more playing time or just trade both of them away for an All Star if at all possible. I’m kind of in a odd place right now though. 4 of the Phils 5 SPs are on my fantasy team and after starting off 0-7 have come back to post a 9-8 record so I would like to continue my hot stread to the playoffs but that means the Rockes are going to have to lose some games here. Oh well, the Rockies are always first in my book.
Row call
Sorry I feel bad being on that for making 1 post after the game was over!!!!!! My bad.

I usually only make one post per game thread...and well, you know what that is.
But yeah, all seven PR writers at least stopped by for this game thread!
Eschew Obfuscation!
I apologize if this has already been said,
but I think the best thing about that box score (other than the W, of course) is the 8 runs on 11 hits. It’s great to see that kind of productivity!
Also tacos.

ESPN sucks.
okay, i love ESPN but they suck… does that make sense? i mean, Phillies/Rocks should be a top bill on highlights, but again the Rocks are shoved under the rug—somewhere after michael vick and before rugby. I’m just sayin’, we pounded the world champions in THEIR ballpark. hello??? ESPN junior anchor says,“Rockies had a great streak in 2007 to get to the World Series but this streak is more under the radar..” Gee, wonder why, ass clown? i guess we need to lose to “Red Sox Nation” before we make it above the fold.
okay, rant over. i feel better. no wait… actually, i’m still annoyed…
I totally understood what he meant by the under the radar comment.
It’s been longer and more sustained, but not quite as improbably and headline-grabbing as what they did in 2007.
And also, we beat up on Jamie Moyer. Yeah, it’s great, but there are other games in this series that would be more deserving of higher billing than this one.
okay.... to a point....
moyer aside, it’s a much bigger series than anything the mets are involved in, right? this series has to do with two very hot teams—one trying to hold onto the division, the other trying to hold on to the wildcard.
part of what bugs me is—and this is not just ESPN, but news in general—is the pseudo shock about what’s being reported and what’s not. ridiculous. ESPN IS sports reporting—they choose, they decide. don’t act like something’s under the radar when you made it that way.
all that said, i’m not one of those people who’s totally against all media and thinks colorado gets screwed on everything. like i said, i watch ESPN all the time and love it…. but hate it when they pull crap like that.
two very hot teams
Not quite. Philly has lost 5 of 6. We haven’t done ourselvs that since mid-April.

It's probably a bigger series than the Mets, but the Mets lost in pretty spectacular fashion last night.
I don’t blame ESPN for bumping that game ahead of others.
