Key statistic
This is a sign of the times.
One run games
w/Hurdle (up to May 28th): 2-9
w/Tracy (up to today, August 4th): 12-15
The Rockies are 10-6 in one-run games since May 28th. Talk about a turn around! This really speaks to the attitude change for me; before the change, it didn't seem like they had any confidence because they were constantly thinking about how Clint was going to lose his job. Also, they had to play the Dodgers 9 times in those two months of April and May.
Two run games
April: 1-7
May: 5-7
First three games of the Astros series: 0-3
Rest of June: 12-2(!!!!)
*The first loss was the one where the bullpen couldn't hold the lead in the game Brian Fuentes saved against LAA
*The second loss was the Andre Ethier walkoff
July: 9-5
August: 1-0
Totals:
w/Hurdle: 6-14
w/Tracy: 22-10
WOW.
You know, all I can say now is.....I hope we can keep this up!

This is a sign of good coaching, and why Tracy should get MOTY
and I remember him stressing about 1 and 2 run games under Hurdle and pretty much flat out said they should’ve won more of them.
That being said, I really hope April and May don’t bite us in the butt, because even those games matter.
I like this FanPost
There’s some effort that went into this and I really appreciate that.
I think what we’re looking at with these numbers is part real, part luck. We’re clearly better off as a team now, but what exactly has Tracy been doing that’s so much better than what Hurdle did? I think we can point to more extended outings by the starters, a switch to better defense at third and in the center/left platoons which would make sense to me to be the types of improvements to show up in close contests. What else do people think?
A combination
of defined roles in the bullpen and, more recently, upgrades on those bullpen pieces.
But the major component I have noticed is…
Confidence.
There are no hanging heads in the dugout, no one checks out of the game when the team gets behind. It seems to be a more unified approach and it was something I absolutely did not see during the first part of the season when they were struggling. I think this is a prime example of the calming influence that Tracy has brought to this club, the confidence that they are talented enough to win any game, no matter the circumstances.
i have always wondered how much influence a manager actually has over the course of the season
game to game i can see the manager having an influence by his use of substitution but over the course of the season doesnt it come down to if the players are performing or not? And lets face it, the players have turned it up a notch since the begining of june.
how much of that is actually tracy would be interesting to find out. i just look at correlation does not necessarily mean causation and since i havent played baseball since middle school i would be interested in learning what exactly a manager does aside from in game substitutions
Thanks!
Aside from the obvious ‘club-house stability’ and ‘chill-attitude’ Jim brought as manager, I think, and most people agree (muzia02), that the real key was his designation of roles. And that doesn’t necessarily even mean the bullpen. Even though he’s been slumping lately, Barmes raised his average from .235 to .296 in about a month after being fixated in the two-hole. Also, Hurdle used a different lineup in every single game! I don’t recall a single game in which he used the previous day’s lineup. I doubt there was any real comfort zone in terms of settling into a spot.
Otherwise, the Atkins benching and CarGo call up (even though he struggled until lately) worked wonders.

Confidence
“When you have confidence, you can have a lot of fun. And when you have fun, you can do amazing things.” – Joe Namath
The rockies look like they are having funa and confidence lead to execution especially those two out hits with RISP. This is what I have been teaching my daughter when she is pitching is softball.
If only we had the confidence to win 1/2 those 1-run games in April/May. We would probably be paced with the Dodgers for the Division lead.
