The hordes beaten back, Rockies win over Cubs 6-2

Ubaldo Jimenez evened his record at 9-9 with a great game pitched against a tricky Cubs team going six and two thirds innings and allowing just two runs, one earned. The offense came alive against injury fill-ins, with the firtst four hitters of the lineup, Dexter Fowler, Carlos Gonzalez, Todd Helton and Troy Tulowitzki, all collecting at least two hits. Fowler and Gonzalez each tripled in the contest and Chris Iannetta hit a key two run home run in the fourth inning to put this game firmly in the Rockies hands. Iannetta, Helton and Brad Hawpe each drove in two of the six runs.

The Rockies bats took advantage of the pregame scratch of scheduled starting pitcher Carlos Zambrano and may reap the benefits of a tired Cubs bullpen all weekend. Four Cubs relievers combined to throw 172 pitches, with the bulk of the load going to Sean Marshall and Jeff Samardzija. The Rockies, meawhile, used just three pitchers and 33 pitches in relief of Jimenez. Matt Daley, Rafael Betancourt and Huston Street continue to be lights out at the end of ballgames, the trio of righthanders have pitched 14 and 2/3 innings of scoreless work since Betancourt was traded to Colorado with another 2 1/3 added tonight.

Back from the game

As expected the Cubs Fans were out in large numbers today, but they were relatively quiet. When they tried to get a cheer/chant going it was instantly drowned out by ROCKIES FANS. I hope we can keep this up so cubs games can be more bearable (pun intended).

Great win, especially from our pitching. I was kind of confused when lineups were announced that Smitty was starting, but Dex ended up in center and Big Z wasn’t starting, so I assume he didn’t feel right before the game and the Rockies adjusted accordingly. If this outfield continues to hit (Carlos/Dexter/Smith/Hawpe) the rest of this season is going to be hard for Tracey to manage.

I like the way Tracy puts it

“It’s that time of the year when teams like the two of ours are playing against one another and there’s a heck of a lot at stake,” manager Jim Tracy said. “It brings that type of environment, and believe me, that environment was out there. I think it was absolutely terrific. I really think our Rockies fans, they were just as noisy as the other gang that was in the ballpark. Believe me.”

Yeah, let’s keep drowning out the other gang. I support that plan.

I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.

We have a Destructobeam sighting

The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.

As of now, Giants bullpen getting roughed up.

2 runs in 8th, at least 1 in the 9th, with bases loaded at time of post.

looking like a big L for the Giants despite the Lincecum start. Thanks toronto!

they've pitched a horrific ninth inning

Wilson walked three and the go ahead run in, then Sandoval/Molina messed up two force outs at home in a row, the fourth run scored on a wild pitch, and they’ve just scored a sac fly. Five runs in the inning and the only hit is a bunt single to lead it off

4 runs

on a bases loaded walks, 2 errors and 1 wild pitch. SF must be in a charitable mood against the hapless Reds….

sort of still talking about it in the other thread...

Broxton let the tying run score for Atlanta too, let’s hope that one goes into extras and the Braves pull something out.

Just got home from the game.

Awesome win, I hate Cubs fans, and the leaping catch made by Tulo was made better because of the angle I saw it from. Was a great time. I should maybe hit up Coors again this season.

I thought you knew that algebra was all razzamatazz. A Globetrotter always saves the good algebra for the final minutes.

We needed a statement to be made in this series with a win.

We got it. Great game Rockies. Loved the defense today, and CarGo really should be starting everyday.

Cubs fans travel like the black plague

Let’s kindly ensure they have no reason to open their abnormally large traps for the next three games. Of all the teams in MLB, there may be none that I loathe more than the Cubs, in great part due to their fanbase. No margin of victory is ever big enough.

In short, I want Marquis to show the Cubs what they’re missing tomorrow. And remind them that they traded him for the Viz. And like 10 runs wouldn’t come amiss either.

Funny thing

was that Marquis was over hugging and high fiving every player on their roster during batting practice yesterday. It seems the players miss him, but he is enjoying Colorado. And I third your opinion that Marquis needs to show them exactly what wrong they did today.
