Game #110: Ryan Dempster vs. Jason Marquis

Chicago Cubs at Colorado Rockies, Aug 8, 2009 6:10 PM MDT

Let's make it 16 straight vs. the NL Central!

Ryan Dempster

#46 / Pitcher / Chicago Cubs

6-2

Dempster got a nice contract after last season, but it doesn't appear he's earning it.  He's striking out less, walking more, and given up nearly double the home runs.  His tRA is worst among Cubs starters.  He still has the best slider in the majors, but the issue has been his fastball, which has flipflopped from having a +11.8 value last season to -12.9.

Jason Marquis

#21 / Pitcher / Colorado Rockies

6-1

2009 - Jason Marquis 12-7 24 21 2 1 0 0 144.1 137 62 56 10 43 68 3.49 1.25

Jason Marquis won the game the Rockies took from the Cubs in April, and in his last six starts, he is 3-2 with a 1.84 ERA, tossing a quality start in each game.  If he can do that a seventh time, he has a decent chance of getting his 13th win, whatwith the lockdown bullpen Jim Tracy has at his disposal these days.

After Juan Rincon gave up his last run as a Rockie nine days ago, the pen has given up just one run in the last 21.2 IP (Joey Votto's HR off Joe Beimel) for a 0.42 ERA, 0.51 WHIP and 9.55 K/9.  That includes a current scoreless streak of 14.0 IP, in which all seven pitches have contributed, allowing just 2 hits in that span.  This is just 12 days after a streak of 40 consecutive hitless plate appearances against the pen was snapped by Fernando Tatis' grand slam.  You might not have noticed the dominance, but we tend to only really notice the pen when they aren't doing their job.

Think I've jinxed them enough?  Nah...I don't believe in jinxes. I think not, therefore it is not.  Right?

Barmes is officially getting a break to get his head on straight, as Quintanilla gets his second straight start after going 0-3 with an error last night.

The game is on MLB Network!

Go Rockies!

Marquis

hope he’s get’s his 13th – would put him back in the lead for NL victories – he deserves it.

The top 6 in that lineup is pretty damn tough against a right hander.

by RockyMtnCat on Aug 8, 2009 5:46 PM MDT reply actions

I have a feeling that

Marquis will pull out his purple lightsaber, and Dempster his red one (after his beard) and they shalt hit grounders to each other with extreme prejudice and anger. Thus one shalt prevail in pitchers fielding practice, and so followeth the game.

Or they both might just pitch. Could go either way.

So Giants won this afternoon...

LA’s begging that Kershaw’s able to go at least seven innings tonight, Pittsburgh’s playing St. Louis close so far, the Marlins are threatening against the Phillies, and Mark Reynolds hit his 35th HR already but Josh Willingham just returned the favor to put Washington back on top.

This rundown of NL contenders brought to you by Dr. Knapp Medical Co.

Of course, I don't think the D-backs or Nationals really are contenders,

I realize umps are suppossed to keep the game moving but

if I was a pitching coach and trying to talk a little strategy with the pitcher, I believe I’d tell the ump to buzz off when they walked out right after I’d gotten out there. Hope that made sense.

3 or 4 bad calls have cost the rox 2+ runs

Cargo got called out on a bad call, then Lee walked and Dempster walked after strikes should have been called, if consistency is important to anyone.

I forgot to put sunscreen on my face..

and I fell asleep on the beach with my hand on my face..so I have an outline of my fingers on my cheek! My belly button is burned very badly, I must not have put sunscreen in there, I didn’t think you could burn your belly button!
