Another Discussion On Postseason Rosters

This thread will attempt to clarify who would available to join the Rockies in the postseason this year, should they make it.

The following players were on the 25 man roster on August 31st, and are therefore eligible:
Garrett Atkins
Clint Barmes
Joe Beimel
Rafael Betancourt
Matt Daley
Jorge De La Rosa
Carlos Gonzalez
Josh Fogg
Jason Hammel
Brad Hawpe
Todd Helton
Matt Herges
Chris Iannetta
Ubaldo Jimenez
Jason Marquis
Franklin Morales
Omar Quintanilla
Juan Rincon
Ryan Spilborghs
Seth Smith
Ian Stewart
Huston Street
Yorvit Torrealba
Troy Tulowitzki
Eric Young Jr.

These additional players were on the disabled list at the deadline, making them eligible as well:
Taylor Buchholz
Aaron Cook
Manuel Corpas
Alan Embree
Dexter Fowler
Jeff Francis

The 25 man postseason rosters must be comprised from this list of 31 players. Exceptions are made if any of the players are injured. Any of these players who are injured come selection time can be replaced with another player. Those players can be anyone who was in the organization on August 31st and still with the organization now (except Greg Reynolds, Greg Smith, and Chris Nelson, who are forbidden by disabled list time constraints.)

If you can find any of this information to be inaccurate, let me know.

Lets see, there are two players in the injured list who can be on the active roster in the playoffs (Cook and Fowler)

I wonder, is Manny Corpas eligible to come off the DL before the roster squeeze comes?

My guess: Fowler takes one of Herges/Rincon/Fogg, and Cook stays off unless he’s completely ready to start by playoff time. We really don’t need long relievers because our starters generally go deep into games, and we really need both Q and EY2 on the roster.

Also, Contreras isn’t eligible?

POSITIVE THOUGHTS!

Corpas is already eligible to come off.

The questions is whether or not he’ll be ready to pitch.

And Contreras is eligible to be an injury replacement because he was acquired on August 31, but he wasn’t activated until September 5th, making him ineligible for an initial spot.

Contreras

If he is on the post season roster, something has gone horribly wrong on the health front in the next 3 weeks.

On a side note – i’ll be curious to see how the Rotation/Bullpen falls out. I would assume Ubaldo and Marquis are starters for sure. 3 and 4 are probably JDLR and Hammel (although I am not sure what order) or Cook, assuming healthy. Does Hammel go to the pen? He does have experience there with Tampa. Anyway – lots of time for it to fall out – just something to think about.

Cook is a wild card

he wasn’t pitching well BEFORE he was hurt. If he’s healthy, does he go ahead in a 4 man rotation of Hammel? I would say no. In fact, if I had to make a rotation for the playoffs, I leave Cook or put him in the pen, leaving Fogg off I would assume.
That gives the rotation of:
Jimenez, Marquis, JDLR, Hammel
Pen:
Cook, Biemel, Betencourt, Morales, Street, Daily, Herges or Rincon

Giambi

All the articles said that Tracy would consider him for the playoff roster? He’s ineligible?

by tulotulotulo on Sep 12, 2009 10:43 PM MDT reply actions

He's ineligible on his own merits. However

He would have to replace an injured player. To replace an injured player the replacement must be in the organization on Aug. 31. Which he was.

So he could replace, Bucky, or Francis.

I've got to think

that with how his start with the team has gone that there is no way he gets left off the postseason roster for any round. Man, it would have been nice to have a bat like his 2 years ago in the World Series to slide into the DH spot.

by Hizilla on Sep 13, 2009 3:18 AM MDT up reply actions

It was why he was brought in

when you get to the playoffs, Teams only have 4 starting pitchers, so that right there opens an extra bench spot for a position player. The bullpen will vary, some teams will carry the normal 7, but some will go with 6, and that’s another bench spot open.

Q

will be interesting. Would the Rockies keep his defense as a depth? Or add another bench bat, like Phillips or Murton or EY2?

I would assume he gets left of the playoff roster….after being on the regular roster all year, because playoff roster needs are different then regular season needs.
