For the Rox to have success in the postseason...

they need to score runs in situations like these…2 on, no one out…you cannot leave them out there.

I read somewhere (PR maybe) recently

that the Rox are among ML leaders in “pitches seen”, if I remember correctly.

How, if they K this much?

by SDcat09 on Sep 13, 2009 3:42 PM MDT up reply actions

Maybe part of it is taking a lot of strikes

If a team has a lot of free swingers, like the Giants, who swing at a lot of first & second pitches, I guess they don’t see that many pitches per AB.

But if you take 2 strikes, foul a couple offf, get a couple of balls, & then pop up or watch the last pitch, you’ve seen a lot of pitches.

So maybe striking out a lot does lead to many pitches seen.

But I’m not sure how valuable a stat that is, then. Today’s game being a good example. Lots of pitches seen, not many runs scored.

No records in the last 10 years should count.

by Maris6161 on Sep 13, 2009 3:45 PM MDT up reply actions

It also runs up the pitcher's count

which becomes valuable

Pessimis warranted

LACK was right. It was obvious Marquis wasn’t sharp in the 6th. With an extended roster, Marquis should have been pulled after the leadoff double to Gonzo in the 6th. This loss is on Tracy. Marquis just doesn’t have good enough stuff to stick with when he’s not on.

Why the pessimism?

I think I can speak for a lot who are panicing over this game. It has to do with the looming series in SF and the fact that we just don’t seem to hit in pitcher’s parks. A repeat of the series two weekends ago, and the WC lead will be 1 1/2. That’s where my pessimism comes in. Let’s hope we get at least one and leave SF up 3 1/2 at worse.

by Rocks rock on Sep 13, 2009 4:28 PM MDT reply actions

It's a good thing you don't play the game

Can you imagine if the Rockies players panicked like some of us have? I learned my lesson in Friday’s game. We were literally down to our last strike….that’s why I’m not panicking.

Why do you think we will repeat the same thing? Do you really have such little faith in this team?

precisely

we have a 94.82% chance of making the playoffs as of this morning.

Granted, our chance of taking the division dropped from 13% to 7.2%.

As big of a collapse as it’d be to miss the postseason [KNOCKS ON WOOD] this is pretty much the best Rockies team ever. It’s hard to be pessimistic about that.

I'm just frustrated

at giving away a winnable game. After three hits in the 5th, I would have had Marquis on a short leash. That said, maybe Timmay won’t be right, and it’s good to see that Zito has come back to earth his last too starts, and Cain has struggled somewhat, as well. So, we certainly should at least find one win among the three. Believe me, Rocks mean everything to me right now – being unemployed and all.

Stewart

is probably the guy on this team I like the least. He just seems uncoachable and lacks complete baseball acumen. I rarely ever seem him in a hitters count, rarely see him shorten up, adjust his apprach and never deviate from the things that have made him a .220 hitter who strikes out 40 percent of the time.

What amazes me is that he has watched a true

hitter for 2 years every day. Who wastes good pitches, and always keeps himself in the count. Yet he seems to absorb nothing, his father in law a minor league manager, etc. I just do not understand how you keep the status quo when it does not work for you. He is a great athlete but seems to have no capacity to “learn” the game.

I don't think Stew's style is of the same pedigree as Helton, I'm sure you'd agree with that

How much do you think is really “learnable” and how much is a born skill?

How much of the wasting good pitches is attributable to Don Baylor/Jim Tracy, and how much is his inflexibility?

What would you think he needs to do to get better? It’s not as if he’s out of time.

I call it getting too cute

Just because you have 40 players available doesn’t mean you have to use ALL of them in one game.

Some comments from Tracy before this series gave me the uneasy feeling he was looking at using the SD series as a time to check out his ‘new toys.’ They squeaked by in the first game but it’s come back to bite them somewhere yesterday and today.

I can't decide whether I'm hungry or just really tired.

We stayed even w/ the Giants, and 3 more days are off the calendar.

Bottom line for the SF series: win at least 1 of 3, and leave w/ a minimum 3.5 game lead.

This is sad

We let the freaking Padres score 6 straight runs on us. 1% chance of winning.

Broncos stole all the Colorado mojo

How dare they!….well, that win was pretty sweet, I’m ok with it ;-)

Gladly sharing a name with Dexter Fowler!

the offense wasn't pretty

but it wasn’t just Orton…. but he threw up a prayer and Stokely worked his magic. You’ll have to catch highlights (that’s pretty much the only one from the game though)

lol he was absoultely terrible

Our Defense and lucky freak play bailed him out

Has anoyone notice...

that the Rockies have really play bad on the road in past couple of months?

by Colsportsfan on Sep 13, 2009 5:14 PM MDT reply actions

they have lost

1-3 to NYM, 1-2 to Marlins, 0-3 sweep to Giants and now 1-2 loss to Padres.. but they have beat up the bad teams on the road..

by Kumar_98 on Sep 13, 2009 5:15 PM MDT up reply actions

The sweep of the Nats is the only good thing that comes to mind

we really need to play well on the road again coming into the postseason stretch

by Colsportsfan on Sep 13, 2009 5:17 PM MDT up reply actions

well the good news

is SF has to travel to LA and then wraps up their final 3 games at Petco. Their offense should really love it there
