one thing i do like about the d-backs organization

they move their prospects through the system when they are good enough to do so. i feel like like we’re too “by the book” sometime. case in point: daniel schlereth up already after less than 2 years in the minors. christian friedrich is in high A ball.

by lockeitup on Sep 18, 2009 9:12 PM MDT reply actions

Relievers have different timetables.

Weathers would have long since been up if it hadn’t been for his surgery and the pain that preceded it. Plus, the D-backs can afford to have a reliever with an 8.76 ERA earning his stripes, do you really want that for the Rockies right now?

by Rox Girl on Sep 18, 2009 9:15 PM MDT up reply actions

In his defense..

The Rockies really took their time with Tulo, Dex, and Jeff Francis.

by Charlie77 on Sep 18, 2009 9:18 PM MDT up reply actions

Dex maybe, but certainly not the other two...

Both Tulo and Francis had pretty quick rises that only players like Lincecum were able to beat.

by Rox Girl on Sep 18, 2009 9:38 PM MDT up reply actions

i know weathers would be up

and i know relievers move more quickly than starters. but what’s the point of drafting so many college players if you don’t want them to move quickly? friedrich had nothing to prove in high A past three starts. everyone seems to get here when they are 24 or 25. i don’t see the downside to moving them faster.

Popcorn chicken...with club sauce...

by lockeitup on Sep 18, 2009 9:18 PM MDT up reply actions

there may not be room for any of these guys right now

but i don’t like wasting arms at low levels when there is nothing left to prove. that’s my main qualm

Popcorn chicken...with club sauce...

by lockeitup on Sep 18, 2009 9:20 PM MDT up reply actions

Alright, you bring up the second major point. You know a player's peak is usually at aroung 27 years old, right?

If you bring up players at 24 or 25, they’re still very affordable at 27. If you bring them up at 22, they’re free agents at 28. What free agent pitcher stays in Colorado at 28? We’d get two or three bottom of the rotation seasons from Friedrich and two decent seasons by calling him up at 22. This way we get four or five seasons right around his peak.

by Rox Girl on Sep 18, 2009 9:31 PM MDT up reply actions

i'm more concerned

with wasting his arm now at levels where he is already proven, then how we are going to afford him at 28. i’d rather find out what i have early so if he does flash potential early on we can lock him up to an affordable long term contract that will turn out to be a bargain later.

Popcorn chicken...with club sauce...

by lockeitup on Sep 18, 2009 9:35 PM MDT up reply actions

They don't want the clock to start ticking

You move them up early and their big league time starts which means the sooner they are here the sooner they are eligible for arbitration and free agency. So getting them up here at 24 25 26 and boom by the time they are arb or fa eligible look at their ages.

My thoughts of comebacks are going to be just as stubborn as your love for Greg Reynolds. I’m convinced this team can score a ton at any given time, since they can get really hot and really fast. Unfortunately, they can do the same thing with cold streaks, which is what’s hurting us. That, and the player’s idiotic belief that we can’t win on the road.

combined marquis / hawpe / tracy blame

in a 6-4 game we can’t put out belisle in the eighth. did you notice boche had affeldt and romo in the 9th to keep the game at 4-0? what is tracy doing saving his relievers? for what? we just had an off day and we have another one coming on monday. down 6-5, 2 on no outs we could have bunted the tying run to third.

too many lefties in the line-up makes it easy to manage against.

this is our best lineup vs righties and best defensive (other than at catcher). we need to see this the rest of the season:
cargo L
dex R
helton L
tulo R
smith L
yorvit R
stewie L
barmy R

Two bad defensive plays

Tulo trying to get another difficult lead runner at 2nd on a grounder, Barmes doesn’t make the tag: no outs: followed by 3 runs

Hawpe catches up to a ball, has it in his glove, it falls out and runs along his stomach next to the wall, before dropping to the ground, leading to 2 more runs

by ddavis539 on Sep 18, 2009 10:55 PM MDT up reply actions

Tulo's gaffe didn't really hurt...

since the next batter hit into the nifty 3-6-1 double play. That left a runner on third with two outs, which would have been the case had Tulo gotten the sure out at first. But Marquis the gave up an RBI single and a two-run bomb to Brandon Allen.

But it was definitely a poor play by Tulowitzki.
