Down the stretch they come....
Alright, with the Braves and Marlins not playing tonight and the Giants not starting until an hour and a half into the Rockies game, Colorado if they can get an early lead has a chance to put some added pressure on the teams still chasing them for the wild card, similar to what the Dodgers are doing to the Rox right now in terms of the division by jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Each Rockies win from here on out tightens the noose a little further on our opponents' necks, it's pretty important that the team gets one tonight to win this series.
Clayton Richard is one of the pitchers the Padres got in exchange for Jake Peavy earlier this summer, and so far he hasn't been pitching like Peavy, but not horrifically, either. This will be his first Coors Field experience. Jason Hammel could tell him a little about what that is like, but I'd prefer we let Richard find out for himself. Richard and the Padres beat the Rockies on September 13 in San Diego, it's time for some payback.

You know, I'm actually OK with Barmes these days.
Even though he hasn’t been tearing it up, he’s been better than Hawpe or Stewart. He’s come through with some hits in important situations. The guy is within a handful of RBIs from Hawpe, Helton, and Tulo. He’s scored as many as Dex.

You know, that's a thought I hadn't considered.
What about putting Barmes at third, and starting EY2 at second? I know Barmey hasn’t played there much, but he has some experience and he’s good enough with the glove, and has a good enough arm, that he could probably do it much better than Atkins. EY2 probably provides similar defense with better range than Atkins, so you’d gaining on offense and losing only a little on defense.

Does anyone else find it worrisome
that the Rockies are like 0 for their last 10 against left handed pitching? Also, just as the Rockies have an outstanding record with CarGo in the lineup, it’s the exact opposite with Atkins in the lineup. he’s a BAD luck charm. They look like a different team with him at 3rd.
I honestly didn’t think he’d see the field again after handing that game to the Giants a week ago. Why does Tracy find it necessary to play the splits so dramatically? To hell with trying to pack the lineup with righties. Just put our best hitters(and defenders) on the field and play ball.

At least Atkins
seems to be getting a little bit better at third. He has never been nor will he ever be great there but if he can get a couple hits tonight as confidence boosters and help the club win, good things will continue to happen.

Well, I think you addressed your second statement with your first.
We don’t hit well against lefties. He’s trying to put something together that will work.
That said, I think the best solution would be if the guys would just play better. If Stewie would hit against lefties, or Atkins would hit and sometimes play D, we wouldn’t have to worry about this stuff.

I know that most people here are still
pretty confident about the Rockies playoff chances. BUT, with the Cards(and Brewers) coming to town looking for payback and Atlanta essentially playing their remaining games against a AAA team, I think tonight is damn close to a must win for the Rockies. At least in terms of allowing themselves a little margin for error against the Cards, Brewers and Dodgers.

So nobody will care about this but me
but I just have to share…I’m sitting here looking out my window to my wonderful courtyard. We have a lagoon with fish etc. My complex is next to an estuary that is also a bird sanctuary.
And there is a 3-4 ft tall blue heron just hanging out a the edge of our volleyball court. Pretty cool!

Co-worker: I watched the Rockies game last night. Barmes was up there hacking at everything, trying to hit it out of the ballpark.
Me: Yeah, that’s what does, alot of flailing and missing more than connecting though.
Co-worker: But he has hit over 20 homers this year!
Me: But his average and on-base stink.
Co-worker: But Barmes is just a pure hitter up there! He’s like Willie Stargell or Reggie Jackson, they hit homeruns and they struck out alot too!

Sinker slider mostly, he's got some nasty movement but control issues.

Sinker and cutter mostly, not so much a slider as a lot of our other pitchers. The cutter’s pretty nasty, it’s why I’ve thought in the past that he could be a Mo Rivera light (as in, not nearly as good) type of closer.

So we've seen Ubaldo, JDLR and Hammel (so far this game at least, knock on wood)
Come up with big stopper type games in the second half. Marquis, not so much. Really, I think that’s our principal playoff rotation right there, I think we’ve got to see if Cook performs tomorrow and in his last start, but I think it’s between him and Marquis for the last slot.

He was signed and nurttured by the Rockies in the minor league sytsem
but if teams hold a prospect too long without putting them on the 40 man roster, they become available to other teams in the Rule 5 draft. Cabrera was selected by the Padres from the Rockies in this draft last winter. He was one of my favorite sleeper prospects at Asheville.
