Rockies determined to make late September interesting, lose to Padres 5-4

Jim Tracy pulled Jason Hammel after 87 pitches with a three to one lead on Thursday night, deciding that the best course of action was to follow his paranoia and mistrust of youngsters. The result:

via www.fangraphs.com

The Rockies runs were generated by a three run Troy Tulowitzki home run in the first and an Ian Stewart solo bomb in the the eighth. The Padres runs were generated by friendly umpires and some Padres doing stuff.

Maybe things will still be okay.

But mother of crap, that one hurts like a gut punch.

As BroJB remarked in the game thread, welcome to town Mr. Double-headed Monster Carpenter-Wainwright.

I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.

Well Carpenter and Wainwright are clones of each other

they spend all their time together and everything, Carpenter is Wainwright’s mentor, etc etc…

SO

maybe if we hit Carpenter the first game, we can symbiotically destroy Wainwright too. KILL. KILL. KILL.

And I say this about my two absolute favorite non-Rockies pitchers in baseball.

I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.

Glad to see San Diego gone.

For a team that has been out of the playoff race since October 07 they sure don’t make things easy for other teams.

I'm beginning to think 5-4

won’t get it done. The micro managing in the middle innings with the bullpen is killing me.

Hit for Hammel in the 6th and bring in Daley to start the seventh. simple as that, this “I want to see if i can get them on track” is going to cost us

Tracy is offering some bogus explanation right now about the 7th inning.

I think Krieger asked the ‘do you regret…’ question.

Talk about circular logic

“you just can’t pull out Hammel, because he was pitching so well, and if the bullpen would’ve blown the lead in the 7th after pulling Hammel out I really would have 2nd guessed myself”

“I pulled Hammel out after 1 batter because he gave up a hit and he had done his job. There is no way you could’ve predicted that Morales couldn’t throw the ball over the plate, so I don’t second guess myself for bringing him in or leaving him”

“From where I sit, I can’t tell where the ball is, if it’s over the plate of too far outside to even hit.”

Um, How about watching some tape to see how your pitchers/batters are getting squeezed & Expanded at the plate.?

Is there something going on between Tracy and Ianetta?

Jim Tracy has mostly pushed the right buttons since he took the reigns in May, but I thought he was off his game tonight. I got nervous as soon as he put Franlin in the game tonight, and then more nervous when he seemed to leave him in too long.

But I’m starting to wonder if there’s some sort of rift between Tracy and Ianetta. I agree that Yorvit has been terrific lately, and deserving of the bulk of the starts. But Torrealba has taken a much bigger load over the past three weeks than Ianetta was ever given when he was starting. And, if I remember correctly, Chris has been pinch hit for late in games the last two times he started.

I thought tonight he should have been allowed to hit against Webb, who had just given up the homer to Stewart and the single to Barmes. I don’t think he would have been replaced had Ianetta been left in, and I thought it was worth the risk of him hitting into a double play. He doesn’t hit into that many, and he is a good bet to either walk or get an extra base hit. I think it would have been better to save Giambi for the next spot, when he could have had a runner in scoring position.

Chris had already doubled and walked in the game, and had he gotten a hit in that situation, it could have done wonders for his confidence.

I think the Rockies are going to need him both offensively and defensively in the playoffs. To mistake Yorvit’s hot streak for genuine long term improvement may be a big mistake.

by jlikesrockies on Sep 24, 2009 10:14 PM MDT reply actions   1 recs

I have less of a quibble over that as the pitchers, but it's a decent point.

That and CarGo has not been good as a pinch hitter this year. I can’t remember for sure, but I think Jeff & Jack said he’s 0-fer in that spot this season, and tends to expand his strike zone and swing at bad pitches.

by holly96 on Sep 24, 2009 10:16 PM MDT up reply actions

I made that point in an earlier thread....

about Iannetta never getting the type of heay workload when he was a starter than Torrealba is getting now. Seems strange to me.

by GoRoxGo on Sep 24, 2009 10:17 PM MDT up reply actions

I would imagine that Tracy....

…was as chagrined by Ianatta’s 6th inning K as most of us were, and that may have played a role. I expect he’s on a short leash considering his struggles this season.

by BroJB on Sep 24, 2009 10:22 PM MDT up reply actions

It is a decent point.

I thought we got a break when they didn’t go to Gregerson to start the inning (didn’t know Black planned on using him to close) and that move definitely forced Black’s hand.

by Rocks rock on Sep 24, 2009 10:18 PM MDT up reply actions

Iannetta has been a failure all year

Yorvit has not. It is a play well situation. He looked so goos on the called third strike in the 6th. A killer situation there and no contact.

by PinchHitLancePainter on Sep 24, 2009 10:25 PM MDT up reply actions

Check out their respective numbers

Even with Torrealba’s hot streak, his On base percentage is only 12 points higher than Ianetta’s, and Chris is outslugging Yorvit by a lot.

Chris has certainly not lived up to expectations this year, but he’s hardly the failure that his batting average makes him seem to be.

the role of the loose, care-free, last place playing Padres was played by the Rockies, who were just beginning to climb back into things.

by ddavis539 on Sep 24, 2009 10:20 PM MDT up reply actions

A nine run seventh...

Wainwright was credited for just one of those runs and two earlier and just three hits, so you’re right, but we got to him eventually. He took 112 pitches to get through six innings. I’m afraid Tracy’s taken the team to a more aggressive place now, though, so things could be different. Then again, things could be a mile above sea level.

At any rate, I still don’t think conceding these games before they’re played would be accepted by the MLB. Maybe we can check on that, though.

I don’t think this an effort problem. they’re trying hard, they’re just not making things happen offensively. What they need, more than broken water coolers, is Baylor to take charge and impose a better approach at the dish. Think opposite field more (Tulo is doing that, god bless him), get more aggressive early in counts and protect the plate with your life with two strikes.

Without that, all the yelling in the world is moot.

Cookies

See, it’s always about cookies. More cookies=better coping skills. This equation has yet to fail me. Of course, there is a slight down side to consuming an entire package of Lorna Doones, but it’s a relatively small price to pay for the comfort.

I tend to agree with this.

Even though it isn’t a sure thing, 5-4 in our last nine should do it…though a 6-3 would guarantee at least a tie and would leave no margin for error for any chasers.

I don't think anyone's too afraid of the Rox at this moment

They’re gonna have to earn back that fear. Tomorrow night’s good time to start.

the fact that they're not afraid makes it even better, though

because our team only seems to play well as an underdog. Not saying I’m expecting this series to be a breeze, but I think we’ll do better with the odds against us. (Knocking on wood loudly)

Well...

…we couldn’t do worse that we did the past two nights with the odds in our favor, so, sure, I’ll buy into your theory.

From Renck's game story:

At the beginning of the evening, the Rockies looked ready to “Charlie Brown” Padres starter Clayton Richard right off the mound.

LOL – Charlie Brown. Renck cracks me up pretty regularly.

Pathetic

this whole “hope the Giants/Braves lose” routine is already old. The Padres are running a AAA team out there and we lose 4-6? 3 times blowing leads? Unacceptable, Jim. Can a guy go from mortal lock to be manager of the year to being unemployed in 2 weeks? Stay tuned to find out!!! Woo, yay team. Have fun helping the Cards make their Cy Young cases this weekend, they could use some Ks and easy wins. Furious that they are choking this. Just venting here, but my god. if we walk into LA needing a series win to make the playoffs, we are toast.

I think I'm more scared of the Bravos right now.

With all of those stupid games against the Nationals……………

Weekend series: Vazquez, Hanson and Lowe vs. Lannan, TBA and TBA. We need to win games.
