Thanks Rockies
I literally couldn’t sleep last night because of that bullpen tankjob….Guuuuuuuuuuuuuh
Oh god I hate that!
A couple of times lately I’ve woken up in the middle of the night and I could check the Rox game, but I’ve stopped myself from doing so because if they lost I’d be too upset to sleep!
Thank goodness, I'm not the only one

I think that is the most angry I have ever been after a game this year
Between the ridiculous strike zone, the bad call on Hundley’s steal, all the bloop hits by the Padres, and Tracy’s hatchet job on the game, I think there was steam pouring out of my ears all night.
You may want to

Easily Tracy's worst game as manager.
Yanking (no pun intended) Hammel at that point was inexcusable.
Given how shaky our bullpen has been, if we have a starter who has his A game going on that night we need to ride him.
Last night has officially put me in panic mode.
I'm still not sold on the bullpen actually being that bad
No, Morales did not bring his good stuff. I do not forgive him.
I don’t see what the point is of “let’s see. I could bring Betancourt in to start the 8th, or I could just leave Beimel in and let Raffy have to deal with traffic….let’s do the latter! I hate giving Raffy a clean inning to work with! I might as well call for IBB on the first batter of the inning! He’s better like that, right?”

September and the expanded rosters
have not been kind to Tracy…its like now that he can use 10 pitchers a night he is way to into micromanaging matchups and leftie righty stuff…
I truly and honestly wonder
at what point a GM calls a manager and says “look, quit dicking around with this cutesy crap and do what we’d BEEN doing that made us win games.”

I wasn't able to watch much
but I did see the ball that Tulo robbed a hit on, right before Hammel was pulled. The TV guys were talking like they hadn’t squared him up much, was that the case? Seemed like he was at least in the zone for the most part.

as a followup
I really really think this is the problem.
I’m also against overusing “role” pitching, in the sense that “CLOSER GETS THE 9TH AND THATS ALL EVER”, but at the same time, I’m not against loosely defined roles “Morales/Daley get the 7th, Betancourt/Beimel get the 8th, Street gets the 9th, and they can all bleed over if they’re needed early”
Not “WELL GEE BEIMEL CAN START THE 8TH >base hit< OH SHUCKS WELL HERE WE GO RAFFY TIME TO WORK WITH TRAFFIC”
I’m sure there’s a different mentality to “Hey Raffy, Morales and Daley got themselves into a jam here, and we have RHP coming up who has a pretty big strikeout propensity. Can you come punch one out to help them?” as opposed to “Hey Raffy, I know you’re supposed to start the 8th, but we decided to let Daley keep going, and now he has a runner on 2nd with nobody out….ready to go?”

I honestly think this is the issue
He’s been bringing people in for the left/right matchups, pinch hitting for nearly every player in the lineup, and just sticking his nose into situations that don’t need him meddling.
Make a starting lineup. Let the starting pitcher go 7 innings and 100 pitches. Use your established bullpen guys to end the game. Pinch hit for the pitcher only, give your starters some confidence. If and only if a player is struggling immensely, then you can pinch run or replace them.
Gladly sharing a name with Dexter Fowler!

Why did Tracy leave Hammel in to get ONE out
when he came to bat with 2 runners on? Either pinch hit for him, or let him pitch. Tracy screwed up twice.
As for Morales, even I could see his delivery was off, and I’m no professional scout. Leaving him in that long was a mistake. Yes, Morales needs to fix himself, but last night was not the time or place for it.

I would like to see this.
Based on absolutely nothing, I feel like there’s some of them that always struggle in that situation, and others that are better. I feel like Morales and maybe Raffy struggle, Daley seems to get it done. But I’d love to see numbers to back it up or not.
Before last night, Morales was 16 of 23 in stranding inherited runners
I remember 6 of those runners scoring…Tuesday night against the Padres and that Tatis grand slam in New York…

Went to lunch yesterday
(before last night’s debacle) with my Dodgerfan friend who is the biggest Tracy critic you’ll ever meet, and he was already laughing (again, before last night) about how Tracy was going to manage us out of the playoffs. But mostly he was laughing at me for saying I thought Tracy deserved and extension. He basically said “as a Dodger fan, I wholly support whatever moves you make to keep Colo from being a threat to LA in the division, and hiring Tracy is step 1.”
Now, I fully recognize he’s going over the top a bit and part of the Dodgerfan anger has to be that Tracy has turned the Rox into a viable threat. I still think Tracy should be retained…if…we don’t blow this. If we do choke our way out, I’m not sure what to think. I never thought this team would be where it is right now, and he deserves tons of credit for that. But at the same time, its inexcusable if he can’t finish it off.
I don’t think I can even watch this weekend, I’m starting a vacation (what do they call it, “staycation” when you just stay at home? It’ll be like the Burbs. I should be in Hawaii but 9 month olds on planes probably not a good plan) and I have literally nothing to but watch games and I don’t even want to because I don’t want to ruin the break. God I need help, this team is killing me.

Baseball's a funny game.....
We lose 4 of 6 to the Padres the past couple weeks, allowing them back into the final contest with some overmanaging and bloop hits along with bad umpire calls. Proves that any team on any given night……
So, baseball being the funny game that it is, we could take 4 of 6 against the Cards and Dodgers. Or 4 of 6 games left on this homestand. Or both! Tonight will be the toughest game of all to win, given our disappointment from last night possibly having a carrryover effect and given the matchup with Carpenter vs. Cook/Contreras/Bullpen. I fully expect a loss tonight, but……baseball’s a funny game.

Why do we have to play the matchups??
I agree that too many players available to Tracy have led him to tinker too much with the lineup as well as with matchups with the pen.
Down the stretch just play the starters now matter if a lefty or righty is pitching and pinch hit later in the game if someone is not getting wood on the ball.
Regarding pitching matchups….last night was a major foul on Tracy’s part. Hammel would have taken care of business like he had all game. I’m pretty sure that he wanted that 10th win!
HAVE SOME FAITH TRACY.
BTW, not feelin’ it tonight for Cookie and the Rox. Good thing I’m going to a concert and wont be able to catch the game. Still have faith that they will hang on to the WC though. If they would just play like they want the division instead of just holding onto the Wild Card. It’s kind of like the prevent defense in football, that usually prevents you from winning.
Excellent analogy TRox on the prevent defense...

Tracy seems to have a short memory
I don’ understand his post-game comments about being surprised the Morales wouldn’t be able to throw a strike. Didn’t he remember the bullet dodged the other night when Morales almost blew a 5 run lead in the 9th? Or maybe the middle game in SD, when Morales walked in the winning run? If Morales is going to be used, there should at least be a very short leash, don’t leave him in after a bloop hit, followed by a 4 pitch walk…. Perhaps Chacin should be given more of a chance, he looked pretty good the other night.
I’m also wondering if Dexter isn’t feeling well or something? His effort in the game last night seemed pretty lack luster. He didn’t seem to put much effort into trying to track down Gwyns popup. When he got on base in the 7th, there were a lot of pick off attempts, but it didn’t seem like he was even trying to get a good lead, when Tulo hit the ground ball, he pulled up about halfway to 2nd and just stopped. Maybe he’s shy about trying to make a play at 2nd after getting spiked in the face the other day, or feeling bad about the ball he should have caught that lead to 2 runs the other night, but it seems he needs to step up the effort.
In his defense
Morales was making his pitches the other night. Locating them well, etc, the Pads were just getting the bloops and such.
As for the second point, I hope Gonzalez is better soon.

Dex stopping on that grounder was the right play.
If he had kept going, he would have ran into the tag. By stopping, he forced Eckstein to throw it. And we all know anything can happen, even on a little toss to 2nd base.

Tracy
is on record as liking the expanded roster. So far IMO it has been a curse with how it’s being used. Prior to Tracy getting the job IMO he was one manager that was worse then Hurdle because of all his micromanaging. But watching him all season convinced me he had changed his ways and now when it’s most critical he seems to be reverting to his old ways. I am leery of managers who have to prove how smart they are with endless tinkering and match ups.
by DieHardRox on Sep 25, 2009 10:23 AM MDT up reply actions
It was the players
that turned around the season once Hurdle was gone. I don’t think it mattered who the Rockies chose as their manager. It was just that Hurdle needed to be shown the door.
Tracy may end up with Manager of The Year, but it really is a credit to the talent the Rockies have on their roster. All September has shown is how much Tracy likes to play matchups.
If there are better prospects for a manager next year out there, the Rockies should definately consider them before making a commitment to Tracy. I’m not sold on Tracy yet.

Again, I find too much negativity
There are some great positives. Hammel was awesome! and Thank God we are identifying Morales’ problems now so he can either fix them or sit out. I think we lost yesterday because of the Umps (mainly) and questionable managerial decisions.
There are a lot of positives going forward!
¡Vamos Rocosos!
I think we lost because the bullpen had a complete meltdown
Adrian Peterson is better than your running back.
Morales maybe...
Not the greatest night, but far from a complete meltdown besides Morales.
The winning run… was out at second (UMPS)
Hammel came to bat with runners on second and third and two outs, only to be pulled two batters (one out) into the next inning. (Manager)
¡Vamos Rocosos!
The Rockies control their own destinty
They just have to sweep the Cards, Sweep the Brewers and win one on the road in LA, and they’ve clinched the playoffs.
Realistically, they’re going to need a lot of help from the Braves/Giants/Marlins opponents to have a shot.
Is there a way
for the Braves and Marlins to both lose when they play each other? No? Oh. Seems to me that a lot of eyes will be on that series. Cheering to back our way in! Hooray!
How do you figure we are backing our way in...
considering we are leading by 3.5? If we were tied then I could see what you are saying..but right now the backing in thing doesn’t make sense to me…

No I'm obviously not going to give up, that's a silly retort
Don’t act like you won’t be watching Atl’s scores this weekend. Look, I still expect the team to make the playoffs and I hope we do so by winning. But the tenor around here for a week has been that we’re a mortal lock to make it, and it just ain’t so. We need to win games, and absent that, we need our Atl/Fla/SF to lose (and, really, both). It seems probably a bit negative to focus on that, sure, but its a bit silly to just assume we’re going to coast into the playoffs because some nonsense simulator says our odds are 91%. We need to WIN SOME GAMES and recent performance suggests that will be easier said than done with our schedule. Playing like we have the past few nights…not getting it done.
OK, but
You have an underdog mentality and we are front runners. We just have to take care of our own business it is the other teams that have to hope for help. Your attitude is apparently that we are going to lose the next three series. That is a negative attitude… How many times has this team lost three straight series? Have faith! These Rockies are AWESOME.
¡Vamos Rocosos!
Hey
I’m a Rockies fan, I have never been in this position before in my 17 years of following the team. How can I have anything but an underdog mentality? No, I agree that being relentlessly negative (as I have been since last night) is probably an overreaction and I’d rather be us than ATL, but really I’d rather be us a few days ago chillin at 5.5. My biggest concern is if the roles were reversed with ATL, we’d feel pretty good about our chances. They sure haven’t given up, they are playing like they expect to catch us.
On the bright side
based on the way they were playing, no one thought they had much of a chance against Haren, but that was proved wrong. Maybe they’ll get up for the next few games against very strong pitching and surprise everyone.
It won't surprise me
I fully expect that Rockies to win this series. I will be flabergasted if they lose tonight, because I really really think they are going to win, but if they do lose I will still have faith.
¡Vamos Rocosos!
flabergasted?
perhaps, you should put some money on the rockies tonight given that level of confidence, as you can good odds with them being underdogs at home. i’m actually encouraged that they aren’t bigger underdogs than they actually are, so you may be on to something.
Not for me
but some people really don’t like the idea of success. It’s a personal issue for a lot of people (seriously). They assume, the worst will happen, especially when they are in an usual situation, like, leader of a race.
Personally, barring a major collapse the Rockies should be in the playoffs. 3.5 game lead at this point is a lot.
I've noticed this sentiment around Denver.

The reason besides the most recent two losses to be panicy
The Rockies have now dropped 7 of their last 11 – they simply are not playing good ball these days. That said, they still have three series and if they go 6-3 the worse they can face would be a one game playoff.
We have a 3.5 - 4 game lead
with 9 to go… We don’t need “a lot of help…to have a shot”
Nobody is going to win out… We are the prohibitive favorites… Anyone would gladly change places with us…

Sure, sample size, but that’s a lot of K’s, and it makes sense with the eye test. The young man appears to be trying to do too much in his PH opportunities, which tend to be in leverage situations.

They mentioned it on the radio.
Also said he tends to expand his own strike zone in those situations and swing at bad pitches. And then he proceeded to do exactly that. So either they jinxed him, or they’re spot on, or both.
It seems to me that his success comes early in the game
I’d be interested in stats for innnings 1-6 vs 7-9.
Same thought pattern here
Carlos Gonzalez is amazing.

We don't need as much help
as the Brave do.
The Rockies still control their own destiny. 7 game magic number, means WE have the magic number….not the Braves.
I think we lost because Tracy manages Marquis / Hammel in opposite fashion
Stick with Marquis when he’s struggling and in a major jam, pull Hammel when he’s pitching great and has just one man on
I don't remember Tracy doing that before.
But I do agree with you in the context of the last two games.
What goes around...
Tony Gwynn had the huge hit in ‘07 that made everything possible for the Rockies. Last night his two bloop hits were instrumental in the Padres’ win. Not to mention a great catch Wednesday night.
Things, as they say, even out in the long run.
I hope not
His bloop hits and catch have nothing on that hit in 2007. In fact, they will likely be meaningless in the context of the postseason

Who else is just LOVING this?
I mean I wish we had won last night, but this is soooo much fun.
I LOVE the ROCKIES! I believe
The competition, the uncertainty, the angst… ENJOY IT!
¡Vamos Rocosos!
I'll love it when we clinch the WC.
If we give it our best shot and come up short i can live with that.
If we overthink this whole thing (the team that is), analysis paralysis, whatever you want to call it — if we overthink this and come up short as a result i’ll be kicking the hamster (that’s not a euphemism for something else in case you were wondering – it is literally the only pet we have) for weeks.
We didn’t give our best shot last night.
Yeah, I didn't LOVE last night per se
I just love all of this…
The race, the angst, the joy, the heartbreak…
¡Vamos Rocosos!
Good perspective, we're getting our excitements worth
for the investment of our hearts, soul and time in rooting for this team.
I'll love it if we do well
but I will hate it if we don’t play perfectly well. Also make sure everybody knows how little I love it until it’s been repeated everywhere in every story.
Seriously though, I have too much trouble not seeing the big picture of how good this team in, even if the timing is awful for them to be cool.

Here's the remaining games chart (to tie, not pass the Rockes)
Looking at things this way make me feel a lot better. I really don’t think they’re going to lose the rest of their games, especially with the way they’ve handled the Central division teams this year.
Rockies Braves Giants Marlins
0-9 . . . . 4-6 . . . . 4-5 . . . 4-5
1-8 . . . . 5-5 . . . . 5-4 . . . 5-4

3-6 . . . . 7-3 . . . . 7-2 . . . 7-2
4-5 . . . . 8-2 . . . . 8-1 . . . 8-1

True
But if the Rockies can’t win games against the Cardinals or Dodgers, what would the point of getting into the playoffs be? They would most likely face at least one of those teams without home field advantage.
If we make the postseason, i'd consider the 2009 rox season to be a success.
Regardless of what we do in the NLDS and beyond (hopefully).
If we implode, well…
agree with this
The season has already been a success in my book; I didn’t think they’d compete coming out of ST and I definitely didn’t think so in Apr/May. The turnaround has been phenomenal. Making the playoffs is obviously now a benchmark but anything beyond that is just gravy.
and how many of those last 3 of the dodgers do you think we
will/can win??
granted, they will have clinched, but still….
So if the Rockies finish 4-5 (that is just one more series win)
Then the Braves will have had to win 19 of their last 23 just to tie!
That is as close to Rocktober redux as it gets!
¡Vamos Rocosos!
And if the Braves manage to do that
I’ll tip my hat to them.
they've already won 11 of 13
so they need 8 of 10 – and given their schedule, that isn’t too far fetched.
So where do the Rockies get 4 wins?
I think we all agree that they’ll get at least 2 out-of-three from the Brewers. Is everyone confident that they can get one game from the Dodgers? Because if we can’t then we need 2 from the Cardinals this weekend, and that’s no gimme.
I’m not going negative, and think we can win any given game, but don’t see this as over.
Ignorance of the American League is a sign of good moral character.
Look out Dodgers...Purple objects in mirror are closer than they appear.
I'll be the guy in a orange shirt EVERY Monday...Broncos are my team win or lose.
You're right
None of it is a gimme. But it’s far more of a gimme than the Braves necessary 8-2 record over that time just to tie us. Even if they manage that, we still control our destiny with a play-in game

Time's flying along these days...
or is that just me?
Let’s get to the playoffs and forget this little schneid…(though tonight is kind of a scary mismatch)
Carlos Gonzalez is a sexy man
Except a) Cook isn't really our ace any more
b) he’s coming off injury
c) he was having serious problems before that
ah heck… go Rockies… I keep meaning not to watch the games, it stresses me out too much, but I probably will anyway.
I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.
I'm very willing to pass the title of "ace"
onto Uball (and I think he’ll be our opening day pitcher next year). Cook is a very solid #2, though, so tonight is their ace versus our very solid #2. Still decent odds, considering that our #5 still gives us decent odds.

Bad prom experience in high school?
Just look at the chart above, we are just fine.
JUST FINE.
Fine. Yes.
Too many sunny optimists
the Rockies are not fine where they are now, if now is recently. They’ve lost 7 of 11. Now, if they turn it around and start playing like they are capable, then yes, they will be fine.
They still have a decent chance of making the playoffs losing at that same pace

see I don't understand this at all
Worst case scenario, we suck, are terrible, miss the postseason, and post an 85-win season.
I won’t speak to the likelihood of that, as apparently it’s based on nonsense computers and playing baseball the wrong way.
But this year is the emergence of the Colorado Rockies as a serious baseball team, one that isn’t powered by the power of flukiness and magic and Jamey Carroll’s familial/heavenly benevolence.
The pitching is better than it’s ever been, and it’s going to grow up some more next year and I’d argue it could be potentially be even better.
The bats, while unexciting this year (despite the 2nd highest run total in the NL) are young, cheap, and going to get better and more exciting as they grow as well.
So while yeah, we ALL want to see the Rockies make the postseason, and I strongly believe they will, but at the very least, we’re poised for many years of success now. How many other teams have a system this deep and this talented and this sustainable?
If you jump during our most promising season ever, you might as well just strap back on the orange and blue and hitchhike your way to Invesco, because we’re all busy over here enjoying our team continue to improve and impress.

Postseason could prove critical to team's futures
baseball is a game where psychology plays a big part. the red sox had to deal with ghosts for 80 some odd years before finally breaking through. the mets last year had to deal with the ghost of the previous year’s choke and went on to choke again.
i agree with everything you say, but they’ll have to stare down ghosts in future years if they don’t make it to the playoffs. not to say they can’t overcome ghosts, but with the media as it is nowadays, it’s a lot harder because they continue stick those ghosts in your face

Not in the minds of the media hounds, we aren't
come next year, you don’t think they’ll be constant reminders from the media both directly in questions to players and managers and indirectly on ESPN and in newspapers.
Who cares about the media
at this point? It’s all about the fans watching and enjoying the game. The players should realize this and play for themselves and us. The media exist to cause trouble.

My point is simply this:
I don’t buy the “we had a great year even if we don’t make the playoffs, we still have a bright future”. I’m just saying a collapse can impact the future. Do you find it any surprise that the Red Sox went on to win another championship, or the Patriots after winning their first went on to win two more, or Tiger continues to have the success he has. Winning breeds winning. Making the playoffs are important to the team’s future.
Yeah!
Just look at what the White Sox and Marlins have done!

Well, the next time either of those teams get to the playoffs
they’ll be reminded of previous success and not previous failure; basically, back to my point about the role of psychology. By the way, the Fish winning one World Series, may have psychologically helped them to win a second one.
Which players from the '97 Marlins
fearlessly remembered their title and used that to help them win in 2003?
This is really a leaky argument here. Yes, winning can engender winning. But that doesn’t mean it causes it.
If we didn’t make it, do you think Stewart would respond to questions about the ‘10 season "well, we have the same core group of players, but we didn’t win it all last year, so I don’t think we can this year"? Of course not, that’s absurd.
It’s not as if these guys aren’t trying.

I guess you have to experience it first hand to understand
believe me, the Rockies don’t want to have to deal with the effing media anytime in the future that they get close to trying to clinch something. I’d be a rich man if you gave me a dollar for every time I heard a Red Sox player, manager or team personnel had to answer a reporters question with “that was in the past, we’re a completely different group of players”. well guess what, it weighs on players. they are human. any psychologist will tell you it’s better to have positivie reinforcement than negative.
Well, I guess we get to be thankful for a surprise blessing then
The media doesn’t really care about us as much as the red sox.
This team is going to keep getting better. We’re a smart organization and we’re going to keep building, farming, and winning. I have full faith in this, esp. after my interview with Marc Gustafson.

That I can agree with
Winning helps the future and builds confidence. I just don’t think the players should feed off the media, but off their fans and themselves more. The fans get info from the media so this could be detrimental to the team attitude if the fans aren’t in-it-to-win-it.

The power of thought!
When we’re behind in the standings, trying to catch up, all the fans energy is focused on winning, and of course we’re so happy when they do win! We were hoping it would happen, and it did, aren’t we awesome, we won because we all were pulling for the team!
But once you’re on top, everyone is thinking about choking, and the team must NOT choke, we cannot lose or we’ll get caught. And when we do lose, it’s the biggest confirmation that all of our worst fears have come true, the team is doomed, we knew they would choke, game over man!
So then, let’s all be optimistic this last week. We just need to win. Don’t think about choking. Think about clinching that playoff spot. You’ll be much happier if you do! :-)
Gladly sharing a name with Dexter Fowler!
I know what you mean..
My “worry” is the following.
If the baseball gods horribly decide to smite the Rox right out of the postseason, it will be a neverending media smackdown. The hallowed halls of ESPN and other outlets and analysts, will once again, take great joy in saying that this proved the Rockies run in 07 was a fluke, blah dee frakkin’ blah blahhhh! We, the average fan up to the ridiculously informed stathead, will be forced to try and explain, as RMN did, why we are still a good team…
and I fear it will fall on deaf ears…that said…
I am in it for the long haul, whether it be all the way to the WS or going down in flames!
