Off-Day Game Watching Thread
THIS THREAD HAS GONE OVERFLOW
Right now the Dodgers are down 7-0 to the Pirates. Manager Joe Torre is demanding that the players do not celebrate until the Rockies are officially eliminated from NL West contention. Keep waiting, Joe!
Hiroki Kuroda allowed 7 runs, 2 earned, and knuckleballer Charlie Haeger is on to pitch.
Braves and Marlins after the jump.
Later tonight, (5:10PM MT) the Marlins will do their best to stave off a BravesTember for the sake of our collective stomachs, and you know, their own dignity. Jair Jurrjens will take the mound against Anibal Sanchez, which should prove to be a pretty epic battle. Tune in via Gameday or Gameday Audio, and let's all root on the Marlins!
Over the past 28 days, Jurrjens is 3-1(4GS) with a 1.55 ERA, amassing 18 strikeouts to 10 walks.
Over the same time frame, Sanchez is 1-2 (5GS) with a 2.51 ERA, and 27K to 13BB.
Since being acquired by the Braves at the deadline, LaRoche has posted a.352/.429/.615/1.044/.438 line (AVg/OBP/SLG/OPS/wOBA) with 12 home runs. Over the past 30days, LaRoche has batted.333/.398/.596/.961/.400, pelting 4 long balls.
In the same timeframe, Marlins 1B Jorge Cantu has swatted 3 dingers while hitting .336/.382/.522/.904/.384.
An exciting matchup with implications dancing all around the National League playoff picture.

Thanks to a LaRouche double
It looks like the Dodgers are offering end-of-season cheap runs. Hopefully they’ll still be doing it at the end of the week.

This!
…and plenty of it.
I know it’s possible that this weekends games might be meaningful to the Dodgers, but at this point I think that’s doubtful. I also don’t think that the level of Dodger intensity will determine the Rockies success (or lack thereof) this weekend.

LaRussa
My dad hates LaRussa, always has. It’s like he’s reading from a script every time he brings him up in conversation: “I hate Tony LaRussa, he thinks he invented baseball.” My dad also calls him ‘Abner’ after the guy who actually did (allegedly) invent baseball. It never fails to crack me up.
It’s not the least bit surprising LaRussa pulled this crap.

After a memorable run-in with LaRussa back in the '90's...
Don Baylor first called him “Abner Doubleday,” I believe. Obviously a terrific manager, but I find him thoroughly dislikable. Still, if you haven’t read Buzz Bissinger’s profile of him (“Three Nights in August”), do so. An excellent read which offers a lot of insight into his methods (and madness).
And you’re right about Doubleday, who had as much to do with inventing baseball as you or I.

As far as the Dodgers go, they won’t win. In fact, they won’t survive the division series. I’ll go you one better: Put me down as the Dodgers going three-and-out in the first round. But there is some logic to it, in how their bullpen has been severely overworked
As demonstrated by Torre pitching James MacDonald in an already 8-0 ballgame.

And it's showing up in recent results
And given their starting rotation breakdowns recently…and ManRam’s recent slump (dude seriously needs more feminine hormone replacement), they’re not set up well for next week.
Wolf, Ethier, Kemp…they have some dangerous players, but Wolf can’t pitch the first 27 innings of the series.
Now I’m not suggesting a sweep, but I am having a hard time seeing how they win a first round at all this year.

When the reality is less than the expectations you are SAD…
Incidentally this formula is why we are all so happy, I mean what were our expectations on June 3rd?

If you want to pick nits and look at more than just OPS against. His K/BB is up at home, and he has a .370 BAIBP at home vs. .290 on the road. That OPS against is inflated by 5 additional homeruns and 5 additional triples. BR doesn’t have the batted ball data that fangraphs does – i’d be interested to see how his HR/FB ratio is at Coors compared to the road.

He’s not our starter anymore, and his arb figure will be too high. But I shall thank him for his years of service…some of them were great. Just not this one. Or last one.

If you guys can watch the game tonight
check out our SS, Yunel Escobar. He’s one of the 5 most underrated players in baseball, IMO. He’ll make a bonehead play every once in a while, but he’s incredibly clutch (leads the majors in avg. w/ RISP and 2 outs) and plays great defense.

Besides, the Rox are 6-1 versus the Cards this year…seems to me the Cards would want to do all they could not to have to face us in the playoffs.

He would be ahead of all but Jimenez there. Quite frankly, I’m surprised about Hammel too, but his stats have really ballooned at Coors, where his peripheral stats suggest he’s not pitching too poorly

Well, I geeked out on the ESPN folks...
I told them this:
Jimenez strikes out more than Lowe, has a better K/BB ratio, gives up less homers, allows an opponents’ batting average over 60 points lower, has a better WHIP, better ERA and better FIP than Lowe. The only reason Lowe has that one extra win is because he gets 5.3 runs of support per game while Jimenez gets just 4.3. Derek Lowe is in no way, shape or form anywhere near as good of a pitcher as Ubaldo Jimenez.

I don't know how he ended up with the ball if that's true.
If you follow the link in the article to the blog with the whole sequence, the fifth picture is the one that Renck shows. The ball appears to be on the ground next to Barmes’ knee. However, in the next image, he’s starting to somersault and the ball is nowhere to be seen. The next shot has him upside down, and the ball is definitely not on the ground. Two frames later it is clearly in his right hand as he is coming upright.
If the ball did hit the ground, it must have bounced back up and rolled with his body, then found its way into his bare hand as he rolled over. Either way, this goes into the category of plays where the umpire made the best call possible (like Holliday touching home plate). There is no way the ump could have called it any other way based on what he could see.

You would think the
slow motion Hyundai cam would’ve caught a non-catch, if that’s what happened.
Also, the entire Cards bullpen would’ve had a clear view of the play, and would probably be protesting if they saw Barmes fake a catch…

They replayed that catch on TBS repeatedly from different angles…and nothing was questioned. And the way Barmes rolled over, I don’t see how he picks up the ball from the grass without breaking his arm…

I can’t believe he didn’t catch it. That pic is clear as day. Braves lineup for you guys, and to address the Lowe/Jimenez discussion
McLouth
Prado
Chipper
McCann
Anderson
Escobar
LaRoche
Diaz
Jurrjens
There is NO way DLowe is better than Jimenez. I’d take Ubaldo over DLowe by a mile (and to be honest, I don’t get why Braves fans on ESPN would take DLowe. Derek gets a TON of criticism on TalkingChop.)
But to say any of your pitchers, besides Jimenez, to be better than Jair Jurrjens is rediculous. JJ has allow less than 2ER in 24 of 32 starts.. If our shitty offense would’ve been better in the 1st half, Jurrjens would easily have 16-18 wins.
Here’s how I think our combined pitchers stack up:
Vazquez>Jimenez>Jurrjens>Hanson>Marquis>Hudson>Hammel>DLR>DLowe

Sorry, but I am also a White Sox fan.
There is no way on this earth that Vazquez is actually a better pitcher than Jimenez. He’s had a great year, no doubt, and he does have some good stuff, but he is also capable of losing his command and putting up a crooked number. Also, I think DLR is better than Hammel and Hudson.

Javy has a lower ERA, WHIP, OBA, 41 more strikeouts/37 fewer walks (in the same amount of IP). The ONLY stat Ubaldo is better than Javy is slug% against.

Don't forget park effects
If people will detract from our hitters for playing at Coors Field, you absolutely must acknowledge with equal weight the effects on our pitcher’s stats. If you go by Fangraphs’ pitcher value (WAR), the pitchers grade out like this:
Vazquez (6.5), Jimenez (5.6), Hammel (3.9), Marquis (3.8), Jurrjens (3.7), DLR (3.6), Lowe (2.9), Hanson (2.3), Cook (2.0), Hudson (0.6).
Using Stacorner’s analog of pRAA, which stems from tRA::
Vazquez (32.5), Jimenez (30.7), Jurrjens (15.4), DLR (12.8), Hanson (10.5), Hammel (8.6), Lowe (7.1), Hudson (2.8), Marquis (2.6), Cook (-6.4)
Still, there’s no one who could say that the starting pitching edge does not go to Atlanta now that Hudson is back and Hanson is a regular. Still, for the season, Colorado is one of three teams that grade out better according to Fangraphs. Just something interesting.

So does
Wren trade any of the starters? If so, which one? For what?
by Hizilla on Sep 28, 2009 4:50 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
thats the big question next to who replaces Bobby Cox in 2011
IMO, yes, he’ll trade one of them. If I was Frank Wren, I would do this:
I would tell EVERY team that every starter besides Tommy Hanson is available. See what offers you recieve and work from there. The only way we would trade Jair Jurrjens would have to be for a superstar hitter that’s cheap and under control for quite a while (Im thinkin the likes of a Ryan Braun, Miguel Cabrera, Adrian Gonzalez, etc.) Personally, I think we find a team to take on Derek Lowe. I know we won’t get as much for trading him, but he’ll save us some money and we aren’t that hungry for a big time hitter with the arrival of Jason Heyward in early 2010.

And many of those traditional stays suffice just fine. But when there is such a disparity in park effects, you have to take it into account somehow to be fair. For that reason, coors field has pushedr towards sabr stats more than any other factor

the Twins Tigers game is in a rain delay right now, which sucks because the only baseball option I have is the RedSox(JD Drew just fell into the duggout)

I stopped rooting for the Yankees in 1987.
When Steinbrenner put Mattingly on the block. That was it for me.
I didn’t root for them thru their mid/late 90’s run as i had sworn off baseball (it’s a long story).
Mattingly was my favorite player after the core of those 77/78 teams had left. Otherwise, it was Munson (although i worshipped all of them).
The innocence of my youth can be personified by my undying devotion to those late 70s teams.

Helton reminds me of Mattingly.
Or vice versa (lest i offend anyone).
Tremendously disciplined hitter, never complained about being on some terrible teams (late 80s/early 90s Yankkees were terrible), lost power after back problems later in their careers but could still hit for average, etc…
