Rockies 13, Diamondbacks 5: Rox sweep away Snakes with bombs

The usual suspects gave Rockies fans little doubt that they would complete the sweep, with the aid of Arizona wildness.  After Jorge de la Rosa wriggled off a wild hook in the first inning, Seth Smith hit a two run home run in the bottom half of the inning.  Ian Stewart followed minutes later with his own two run dinger, his third home run in four games.

Yorvit Torrealba surpassed Joe Girardi for the Rockies franchise record for a hitting streak for a catcher, extending MLB's longest current streak to 15 with two doubles, driving in three.  Carlos Gonzalez hit a home run for the second straight game, adding a single and a walk, but Seth Smith was the real hero.

Smith hit a second home run in the fifth, helping him to finish 2-for-4 with 5 RBI, 2 runs and a walk.  In the series, he went 9-for-13 with three homers.  The series helps make Smith a favorite for NL Player of the Week.  He finished the week going 13-for-24 with 4 HR, 10 runs, 11 RBI and 4 BBs.

Aided by ten walks (three by Stewart and two by Jason Giambi), the Rockies managed to pound out 13 runs on just 10 hits.  Seven ot those ten hits went for extra bases.

Jorge de la Rosa continued with a current theme of overcoming adversity.  He allowed just 2 hits and 1 run in five innings, but he also walked six.  It was good enough to earn his 12th game in his last 14 starts.

Chris Young had the best game of the year for Arizona, hitting three solo home runs off three different pitchers and Mark Reynolds hit his 41st home run.  Justin Upton thought he hit a HR to center in the third inning, so he posed and walked to first, only to see the ball bounce off the warning track.  A quick CarGo throw held him to a single, and manager AJ Hinch responded by pulling Upton for the gaffe.

The game lasted 3 hours and 40 minutes and included 22 walks between both sides.

The Giants lost on a walkoff HR by Prince Fielder, so Colorado now leads the Wild Card by two games.  The Marlins and Braves, the next two in line, also lost.  Los Angeles plays the Padres tonight at 6 MDT.

Continuation of bush league act

by Brewers, who have had choreographed moves all season, particularly when Braun or Fielder hit homers. Hell, they were expected to challenge for the division title and they’re not even .500, but they celebrate like they’re NL Central champs. I may be old-fashioned, but I think it’s classless.

Why 2011?

Dude, there’s almost no way he’s gonna use his player option for 2010-11. Unless the NBA salary cap falls to like $48 million, Lebron is becoming a FA in 2010. Not saying that he will leave, just, you know, whatever.

The Brewers aren't even the Suns

Not to mention the fact that the Suns currently consist of a forgotten guy still putting up 14 ppg and 9 apg, a dude with a messed up eye, a 36-year-old made of glass, Michelle Wie's husband, and a good deal of not-so-interesting people.

Well, Leandro Barbosa is good when he’s healthy, and J-Rich can still get his dunks blocked by LeBron. I really don’t care about Channing Frye and Jared Dudley.

Oh, you tell me NOW that this is actually a baseball blog….

True Statement.

Also, I’ve developed a foolproof method for determining a person’s Colorado-ness. Natives pronounce the “a” in Colorado as the a in “cat.” Colorado-wannabes pronounce it as in “car.”

Just that it is incredibly strange. I have never in my life heard native Coloradoans pronounce it that way, and everyone I know bristles at that pronunciation (probably heightened because I’m from Arvada, which people similarly mispronounce).

Well, I've learned something today...

While it’s almost-foolproof that someone who uses the flat-a is a Coloradan, there are also real Coloradans who use the ah’d a, as well. So we shouldn’t judge people based on how they pronounce something. We should only judge them based on whether or not they’re Coloradans.

I don't know why I am wadding into this

First of all I laugh at people who say it with ash (I think you are calling this the “flat a” I am confused.)Ash is the “a” in cat (incidentally also the "a in “ash”)

Second of all, the true spanish pronounciation is unlike anything any Coloradan would say (except hispanic Coloradans) and DOES NOT have a rolled r. Only the double r is rolled in Spanish

I would argue though that if there was such a thing as the correct pronounciation it would be the Spanish pronounciation

Disclaimer: I am born and bred Coloradan (From Boulder) and fluent Spanish speaker (living in Mexico, actually)

well, shut my mouth..

Living in San Diego…20 miles from the Mexico Border. I’m sure I’ve never heard Colorado pronounced in the Spanish way. My mention of R being rolled was merely to explain the enunication of the R …and I have actually heard it pronounced exactly as I have …perhaps to my untrained ear…the R sounded rolled or trilled…

But thanks thanks for the Spanish lesson..

Hey I meant no offense

I was agreeing with your “a” pronounciation points (disagreeing with Yokel)
I am sensitive to the trilled r because one of my continuing errors in Spanish is trilling all of my r’s (sometimes this leads to embarrasing situations like the other day when I was buying pears)
The Spanish “colorado” would need to be written like [Coe-low-rah-doe]

The a in cat is called "ash"

There is no “a” sound in “car”… there is only a sylabic (or vowel) “r” sound.
Unless you are from New England
English has like 19 unique vowel or sylabic sounds so it is confusing

That was the EASIEST part. The hardest part was learning sounds for which there’s no equivalent in any western language.

I understand not thinking the Rockies are going to win the NL West given the slim odds, but trying to dissuade other Rockies fans from even looking at it just seemed to take fear of a letdown a little far, I thought.

The Rockies control their own destiny

they just need to keep wining series. If the Dodgers happen to collapse and fall behind, that incidental at this point.

by ddavis539 on Sep 6, 2009 9:31 PM MDT up reply actions

Does that apply?

I mean, with just a 3-game set against the Dodgers left to do the controlling, and a 3.5 game deficit, they still need the Dodgers to lose one more over the next month to really do the controlling. [/pedant] But I get your point, and am enjoying the score-board-watching as much as the next guy.

by Yokel on Sep 6, 2009 9:36 PM MDT up reply actions

Rockies actually need to be within two of the Dodgers to control their destiny

Since LA has the tiebreaker with the head to head win, Colorado needs to finish ahead of them to win the division.

I want to see the final series as such

Rockies 2 back from the Dodgers and 4 games up on the Giants, so the playoff spot is secured but the Division is still within reach.

Of course I’d prefer us to be 4 up on the division, but the above is far more exciting.

As far as going to the playoffs.

The wild card is theirs to lose. Getting the division would be incidental if the Dodgers keep losing and Rockies happen to pass them.

NBA teams do that trash all the time. MLB is a class higher than the NBA or NFL. This league doesn’t need antics to be appreciated.

I flipped over to watch that game as it was in the 12th and the bases were juiced just in time to see the pitch that dropped him. Yikes! I am sure they are holding him for medical evaluation. It is no fun to see someone get tagged in the head with a heater.
