Rockies 13, Diamondbacks 5: Rox sweep away Snakes with bombs
The usual suspects gave Rockies fans little doubt that they would complete the sweep, with the aid of Arizona wildness. After Jorge de la Rosa wriggled off a wild hook in the first inning, Seth Smith hit a two run home run in the bottom half of the inning. Ian Stewart followed minutes later with his own two run dinger, his third home run in four games.
Yorvit Torrealba surpassed Joe Girardi for the Rockies franchise record for a hitting streak for a catcher, extending MLB's longest current streak to 15 with two doubles, driving in three. Carlos Gonzalez hit a home run for the second straight game, adding a single and a walk, but Seth Smith was the real hero.
Smith hit a second home run in the fifth, helping him to finish 2-for-4 with 5 RBI, 2 runs and a walk. In the series, he went 9-for-13 with three homers. The series helps make Smith a favorite for NL Player of the Week. He finished the week going 13-for-24 with 4 HR, 10 runs, 11 RBI and 4 BBs.
Aided by ten walks (three by Stewart and two by Jason Giambi), the Rockies managed to pound out 13 runs on just 10 hits. Seven ot those ten hits went for extra bases.
Jorge de la Rosa continued with a current theme of overcoming adversity. He allowed just 2 hits and 1 run in five innings, but he also walked six. It was good enough to earn his 12th game in his last 14 starts.
Chris Young had the best game of the year for Arizona, hitting three solo home runs off three different pitchers and Mark Reynolds hit his 41st home run. Justin Upton thought he hit a HR to center in the third inning, so he posed and walked to first, only to see the ball bounce off the warning track. A quick CarGo throw held him to a single, and manager AJ Hinch responded by pulling Upton for the gaffe.
The game lasted 3 hours and 40 minutes and included 22 walks between both sides.
The Giants lost on a walkoff HR by Prince Fielder, so Colorado now leads the Wild Card by two games. The Marlins and Braves, the next two in line, also lost. Los Angeles plays the Padres tonight at 6 MDT.
Comment of the Night
Ok if we're extrapolating Smith ...

Okay not that I'm not grateful to the Brewers
but WTF is up with the lying down in front of Fielder at home plate?
I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.
Some weird correographed act
That’s what the AP thing said, I was confuzzled by it too

Continuation of bush league act
by Brewers, who have had choreographed moves all season, particularly when Braun or Fielder hit homers. Hell, they were expected to challenge for the division title and they’re not even .500, but they celebrate like they’re NL Central champs. I may be old-fashioned, but I think it’s classless.
Yeah
I like the Brewers, particularly for their penchant for helping us out, but I think a lot of their gimmicks leave something to be desired.

Why 2011?
Dude, there’s almost no way he’s gonna use his player option for 2010-11. Unless the NBA salary cap falls to like $48 million, Lebron is becoming a FA in 2010. Not saying that he will leave, just, you know, whatever.

The Brewers aren't even the Suns
And their moves would’ve totally sucked had Shaq not been leading them
"I shoot so many 3's because I can't shoot 4's" -Antoine Walker
Not to mention the fact that the Suns currently consist of a forgotten guy still putting up 14 ppg and 9 apg, a dude with a messed up eye, a 36-year-old made of glass, Michelle Wie's husband, and a good deal of not-so-interesting people.
Well, Leandro Barbosa is good when he’s healthy, and J-Rich can still get his dunks blocked by LeBron. I really don’t care about Channing Frye and Jared Dudley.
Oh, you tell me NOW that this is actually a baseball blog….

I agree
Franchise… I loved it. It was something different and unique. Who cares that they are 5 games under? The Nationals jumped up and down when Zimmerman hit his walk off, should that be considered “bush league” because of their record?? Give me a break, have some fun. its a long season
every team jumps up and down, the mosh pit at home plate is kind of the accepted level of celebration
Jonathan Papelbon’s absurdly overkill-ish fistpumps and the Brewers attempting to make the move into the NBA makes them look like a team full of children who finally beat an adult team.

True Statement.
Also, I’ve developed a foolproof method for determining a person’s Colorado-ness. Natives pronounce the “a” in Colorado as the a in “cat.” Colorado-wannabes pronounce it as in “car.”
I pronounce it Colorado (as in rah-doh)
I grew up there, lived there for 25 years…and moved to cali…it hasn’t changed since I’ve lived here…..
Proudly SPILLYing all teams Colorado whilst residing in Sunny San Diego!
(the Broncos are sorely testing my Spillage)
That's just bizarre.
I blame your parents. Or maybe you grew up in some pocket of wrong pronunciation.
Actually, its more correct because it is
closer to the true Spanish pronunciation….save the rolling of the R:)
Proudly SPILLYing all teams Colorado whilst residing in Sunny San Diego!
(the Broncos are sorely testing my Spillage)
Clearly
You have never been to Buena Vista, if you think closeness to the Spanish pronunciation is the same as closeness to the correct pronunciation.
I actually don't know anyone who pronounces it
with a flat A, my entire life growing up in Aurora back in the day…(way back) and no one I know now..not my family in Colorado either..(and they are educators)
Proudly SPILLYing all teams Colorado whilst residing in Sunny San Diego!
(the Broncos are sorely testing my Spillage)
I have no explanation for that.
Just that it is incredibly strange. I have never in my life heard native Coloradoans pronounce it that way, and everyone I know bristles at that pronunciation (probably heightened because I’m from Arvada, which people similarly mispronounce).
That's funny,
because I bristle when people pronounce it with the flat A. LOL! and I also bristle when people pronounce Arvada…Arvahdah
Proudly SPILLYing all teams Colorado whilst residing in Sunny San Diego!
(the Broncos are sorely testing my Spillage)
I have a friend
From Nevada who uses the flat A for his state, but the, uh, ah’d A for Colorado. That’s almost as weird as saying Arvada but Colorah-do. :)
see we could argue this all day
I think when I lived there it was Colorado not flat A…and overtime Texans and Okies moved to Colorado…had children and diluted it so its pronounced differently now…However, its not wrong to pronounce it either way…
Proudly SPILLYing all teams Colorado whilst residing in Sunny San Diego!
(the Broncos are sorely testing my Spillage)
I don't know, I guess it depends on how old you are.
My mom also grew up in Colorado, and she pronounces it the same way I do.
well, maybe your mom lernt you wrong
as you suggested my parents did….
Proudly SPILLYing all teams Colorado whilst residing in Sunny San Diego!
(the Broncos are sorely testing my Spillage)
Not Wrong
But when, say, my wife’s friend pronounces it with a flat-a, I know instantly she’s a fellow Coloradan.
I’m pretty sure it’s got nothing to do with Texans or Okies – I’m a 4th-generation (at least) Coloradan with no such influence.
I’m blaming the Californians for the “ah.”
well i'm sort of over the discussion

okay no worries.....
its all good :)
Proudly SPILLYing all teams Colorado whilst residing in Sunny San Diego!
(the Broncos are sorely testing my Spillage)
Well, I've learned something today...
While it’s almost-foolproof that someone who uses the flat-a is a Coloradan, there are also real Coloradans who use the ah’d a, as well. So we shouldn’t judge people based on how they pronounce something. We should only judge them based on whether or not they’re Coloradans.

"In the future, I want to be a fossil. Or, at least have my feces be fossilized"
-Pygalgia
I don't know why I am wadding into this
First of all I laugh at people who say it with ash (I think you are calling this the “flat a” I am confused.)Ash is the “a” in cat (incidentally also the "a in “ash”)
Second of all, the true spanish pronounciation is unlike anything any Coloradan would say (except hispanic Coloradans) and DOES NOT have a rolled r. Only the double r is rolled in Spanish
I would argue though that if there was such a thing as the correct pronounciation it would be the Spanish pronounciation
Disclaimer: I am born and bred Coloradan (From Boulder) and fluent Spanish speaker (living in Mexico, actually)
well, shut my mouth..
Living in San Diego…20 miles from the Mexico Border. I’m sure I’ve never heard Colorado pronounced in the Spanish way. My mention of R being rolled was merely to explain the enunication of the R …and I have actually heard it pronounced exactly as I have …perhaps to my untrained ear…the R sounded rolled or trilled…
But thanks thanks for the Spanish lesson..
Proudly SPILLYing all teams Colorado whilst residing in Sunny San Diego!
(the Broncos are sorely testing my Spillage)
Hey I meant no offense
I was agreeing with your “a” pronounciation points (disagreeing with Yokel)
I am sensitive to the trilled r because one of my continuing errors in Spanish is trilling all of my r’s (sometimes this leads to embarrasing situations like the other day when I was buying pears)
The Spanish “colorado” would need to be written like [Coe-low-rah-doe]
Sorry I overreacted..
I wasn’t meaning to be mean…I’m just over the whole…"not true Coloradoan, because you don’t pronunciate (that was on purpose) the way I do’…got on my last nerve….

The a in cat is called "ash"
There is no “a” sound in “car”… there is only a sylabic (or vowel) “r” sound.

The Rockies control their own destiny
they just need to keep wining series. If the Dodgers happen to collapse and fall behind, that incidental at this point.
Does that apply?
I mean, with just a 3-game set against the Dodgers left to do the controlling, and a 3.5 game deficit, they still need the Dodgers to lose one more over the next month to really do the controlling. [/pedant] But I get your point, and am enjoying the score-board-watching as much as the next guy.
Rockies actually need to be within two of the Dodgers to control their destiny
Since LA has the tiebreaker with the head to head win, Colorado needs to finish ahead of them to win the division.
Piece of cake :)

Rockies 2 back from the Dodgers and 4 games up on the Giants, so the playoff spot is secured but the Division is still within reach.
Of course I’d prefer us to be 4 up on the division, but the above is far more exciting.

The wild card is theirs to lose. Getting the division would be incidental if the Dodgers keep losing and Rockies happen to pass them.

Like I've beaten into the ground but for some reason can't stop repeating
NBA teams do that trash all the time. MLB is a class higher than the NBA or NFL. This league doesn’t need antics to be appreciated.

Why do I subject myself to BBTN!?
I must be a masochist…They said that Jason Giambi is the new hero in Colorahdoh…Poor Holy Smit….no love at all…

okay sooo the main story BBTN took from our game today
is CY’s 4 home runs and Giambi starting…unbelievable….
MLB Network….why no analysis on Sundays(just Quick Pitch)…sigh

Wow....
impressive, considering CY only had 3. The Coors Field scorekeeper strikes again??

He's going to stay with his family in GA instead of flying to CO
Probably a good idea, as CO really messed up Ryan Church when he got concussed last year. But yeah, they got him dead to rights. Scary, especially with his parents in the crowd.
I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.
I'm confused what you are referring to here...
Are you saying he didn’t get proper care in Colorado….?

No
The flying and the altitude screwed with the head injury.
I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.
Ohhhh that makes sense....scary!

The hit Micah took was scary
I flipped over to watch that game as it was in the 12th and the bases were juiced just in time to see the pitch that dropped him. Yikes! I am sure they are holding him for medical evaluation. It is no fun to see someone get tagged in the head with a heater.
It was the worst part of a great baseball day
Is it just me
or does it seem like there’s a whole slew of guys getting hit in the head recently?
I love Greg Reynolds. Deal with it, suckers.
Damn... now I'll have to check the video.
And Micah’s such a nice guy, too. :-(
