Monday Rockpile: Be wary of Seth Smith...
Especially if you're an opposing pitchers. :)
No seriously, like I mentioned and got lashed for yesterday with Yorvit Torrealba, Seth Smith's tear is also unsustainable, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't enjoy the awesomeness while it lasts. And the good thing with Smith is that when he does come back down to earth, he will likely still have a very valuable bat for the Rockies.

Meanwhile, I think fans tend to think that both good and bad stretches represent new "normals" for players, when normal will probably be closer to what it always has been. Just as Smith's or Yorvit Torrealba's hot stretches are almost certainly unsustainable, so too are unusually extreme cold streaks, such as the one being experienced by Brad Hawpe:

Sunday gave the Rockies the best possible outcome it could, and the separation from the other wild card contenders is a relief. Let's continue that trend with the Reds series.

This has been a fun week, and a good bounceback from our little skid.
Current record : 5-1
Target record before Giants series: 10-3
Target record for remainder of this stretch: 5-2
I think that’s pretty possible, but we can’t let up…a 2 game lead is nice but can vanish in a hurry!
Carlos Gonzalez is a sexy man
hellyeah
that is exactly what i am thinking as well and hoping the Giants go 4-2 at best in these next 6 games…i would like to be 2.5/3.5 up on them going into that series
we seem to have gotten over that HURDLE

Sweet stroke..
Seth Smith, what a great story. How do you not let this guy get plenty of ABs right now. Dude is just raking.
Seth Smith has been optioned to class AAAAAAAAAA
God needs Seth Smith’s superpowers to defeat Satan. He will start in left field tonight and be back tomorrow.

Follow the trends..
Of course Yorvit is fool’s gold, but he’s trending in a similar fashion to his 2007 season when he ripped up the playoffs. If he continues this trend he will peak in a couple of weeks and comeback to the Yorvit we’ve all come to know and watch GIDP. Dreamy on the other hand is hitting right in his average, and the only time he has shown outstanding ability was in early 2008 when he was platooning with Mr. GIDP.

Seth OTH has been a flatlined model of consistency with a slight improvement this year which should be expected of a 2nd year player. Brad Hawpe is in his normal 2nd half slide into death valley and could use some rest since he’s been a fixture in RF even playing through the ASB.

While Smith is riding thunder made of rocket fuel,
or whatever, and his bat is truly unsustainable, his success in general isn’t going to be. Guys who have good plate discipline like Smith tend to be able to turn it into nice hot streaks like we see now, and when they cool down, their sheer on-base ability keeps them as a worthwhile bat in the lineup
