Rockies 4, Reds 3: Ian Stewart's late-inning home run secures victory on Labor Day

Thoughts on the game:

  • Tulo may have an oblique injury or some sort of "muscular thing," but nothing official has come out yet. Please don't be a major injury.
  • Ubaldo Jimenez gets credited with a "quality start" by going six innings and allowing three runs. He also struck out five. But his WPA was -0.68.
  • Ian Stewart came through big time with that homer in the eighth, having stuck out thrice before that AB.
  • I want Huston Street back. Franklin Morales made me nervous. Frankie also got squeezed in the strike zone a couple of times by the ump, but those high leverage index situations he was in were tense. Still, he wound up with a .168 WPA.
  • Chris Iannetta made two throwouts today, but Clint Barmes helped save the second one. That one came in the top of the ninth and had Barmes missed that ball, the game would have been tied.

Saved by Barmes for sure,

but CDI was huge. Ian was huge. The Rockies were huge. God I love this team.

I don't think I should be on the roll call...

I was around to make trouble before the game started and then left.

Go Rockies!! Great win today, albeit a little tight. I want Street back.

And I really, really, really hope Tulo isn’t out for more than a couple days. That would be BAD. Horrible. Terrible.

Okay, that's what I figured were the options.

Is it a huge pain in the ass to get from one borough to another? Only time I’ve been to NY it was Manhattan and it took half an hour just to get around there, let alone to another part of the five.

unless you’re going to the outskirts of boroughs or doing anything involving Staten Island.

The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.

Yesterday was fun, but certainly not intense and I was a little worried about how the players would respond…
If both Tulo and Ubaldo responded by getting (even minor) injuries which will cause them to miss starts… Well, I couldn’t imagine a worse postscript to a great game.

So a little off topic...but comments from Andre Ethier

after the Padres beat the Dodgers Sunday night…

“It’s always tough to play a team that it’s hard to get up for. San Diego is going through a transition period where they are a lot of young guys, a lot of unfamiliar faces. It’s not the same energy as facing, say, a San Francisco team that you’re battling for the division title. It’s not an excuse, but that’s the way it is sometimes”

So things I get from this..
1) Andre Ethier has no heart, despite his repeated attempts to kill us.
2) He seems to think SF is actually battling them for the division…math fail.
3) Rockies better not EVER show this kind of attitude toward any other team we play, no matter their record!

Proudly SPILLYing all teams Colorado whilst residing in Sunny San Diego!

(the Broncos are sorely testing my Spillage)

by SDcat09 on Sep 7, 2009 5:59 PM MDT reply actions

With the exception of 3, I disagree.

1. Ethier is a passionate player, who is just being honest. It’s a bad attitude to have because it can get you beat (which is precisely why I don’t want the Rockies to have that angle), but it is a legitimate viewpoint.

2. He clearly referenced A team that was in the battle for the division title, not THE team that was in the battle for the division title. Just because SF came to his mind first, I really don’t take offense.

by Greg Stanwood on Sep 7, 2009 6:05 PM MDT up reply actions

I didn't take offense,

I think the Dodgers don’t see us as their competition especially since they’ve whipped us pretty good to this point.

It also seemed like he was saying, well, if we had really been trying, we could have beaten the Padres. I’m not sure if I was his teammate, I’d want to hear him say that. Maybe this will have a positive benefit for us…cause some clubhouse issues for the Dodgers…lol

I bet that the first team that popped into his head was San Francisco.

That’s my explanation for it. The Dodgers and Giants are rivals…it’s natural for him to think of the Giants before the Rockies.
If that’s not the way it was, then that’s a shame, because I’ve been an Ethier fan since the A’s traded him for Milton Bradley and I’d hate to have to boo him MERCILESSLY (I’ll boo him as long as he’s with LA anyways….but still)…

I'm not sure why everyone is defending Ethier

personally I think he’s the guy I can’t stand the most on the Dodgers. He always has this smug attitude and doesn’t seem to respect any other teams or players. I really don’t like him and feel he did it intentionally. I don’t think he has any respect for the Rox, and maybe for good reason, since they’ve beat us up, but I just don’t like his attitude. I just hope we sweep the Dodgers in that last series.

Had a great day at the yard

Thanks to friend, had awesome Club Level seats (2nd row) just behind and to the third base side of home plate. Best I’ve ever had there. Crowd was pretty quiet until about the sixth when things started heating up. Hard to gauge Tulo’s injury from up there, but am glad Tracy erred on the side of caution here. We can’t afford to lose him for two weeks if it’s at all avoidable. Let him rest tomorrow. Defensively we’ll be ok, and someone will just have to be extra good at the plate. I’m thinking it would be a good time for a monster game from Helton.

And BTW, I did my very best to squelch the -—— Wave in the name of Rowbots everywhere. Alas, I was unsuccessful. Go Rox!

Quick thought

Assuming Tulo is out tomorrow – which I feel would be wise, regardless of how he feels, just as a precaution – what about starting Q at SS rather than Barmes? I figure that Barmes has “attuned” himself to 2B, and he might be more effective remaining there rather than switching over to SS. Meanwhile, Q has gotten bench time at both positions (granted, twice as much 2B as SS) and might be more effective at SS than Barmes.

mind you, I’m not really advocating this, just a thought…

I can't remember

NOT paying $10 for a beer. Maybe they’re $8 at Dodger stadium for the smalls, pretty sure at least 8-9 for the smalls at Staples too.

$4 beers at Chase Field...

Yeah,

the last 2 seasons, the Dbacks have been really good about providing cheap options — $5 tickets, $4 beers, $2 hot dogs, $7 Dbacks shirts in the team shop, etc.

Coors Field

has a cheap options section as well. Although I think they’re all like infant sized servings.

There's also

a $15 All-You-Can-Eat section starting this season.
