Rockies Add Four Players to the Roster for Stretch Run
As Inside the Rockies' Steve Foster reports, the Colorado Rockies have called up four players from AAA Colorado Springs, whose season ended after their playoff aspirations were dashed yesterday.
Receiving the call to the Rockies are two pitchers (Jhoulys Chacin and Matt Belisle) and two hitters (Matt Murton and Mike McCoy). All of the players except for McCoy have played for the Rockies this season.
To make room for Belisle and McCoy (Murton and Chacin were already on the 40 man roster), the Rockies designated Adam Eaton for assignment and placed Chris Nelson on the 60 day DL.
These moves provide much needed depth for the stretch run to the Rockies, who have suffered a recent rash of injuries to key players.
Speaking of that, here's an injury update by the AP on Troy Tulowitzki and Ian Stewart.

That said, i'm somewhat surprised Miller didn't get the call as well.

We have enough outfielders as it is, plus with the 40 man roster, there probably wasn't room
We needed infielders the most, which is why McCoy got the call, and even he can play the outfield.
That being said, I’m mad that they aren’t giving Esmil Rogers or Sam Deduno any chance whatsoever, even though they are on the 40 man. At least activate them just in case Russ’ dream of a 22 inning game comes true….

They were in the duggout
during the game today. I don’t know what that means but they are with the team.

Good to see McCoy get the call
I’m excited to see what he can do.
Now, Belisle on the other hand…

Gotta have someone mop up
The Rockies need some oldschool purple/white striped high socks. The team’s problem is it’s lack of swagger. I feel strongly that these socks will provide the swagger necessary to tap the potential that are the Rockies.

Well
That’s certainly a situation I’d like to avoid. I’d rather not see any janitors running out there for the Rockies.

I'm surprised Miller and Colonel didn't get the call
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

Our 40 man roster is pretty full as it is...
there just wasn’t room for more depth than that.
McCoy can play MI and Murton has big league OF experience (and is good) while the others do not provide the Rockies with something useful enough to replace another 40 man roster slot.

Yeah, I'm kinda surprised about Colonel
I always figured he’d be the one called up when Atkins was traded, but that never happened. He’s an intriguing one.

When is Fowler getting back exactly?
Give Hawpe a few days off and go Murton, Cargo, Smith. Hawpe is slumping and he has zero defensive value.

I can't agree with that last statement
Hawpe isn’t a good glove guy by any stretch, but to say that he has no defensive value is flat-out wrong. He makes some boneheaded plays, but he normally catches anything hit near him, and his arm saves a ton of runs, if only by holding singles to doubles. He doesn’t have to be a magician with the glove with Fowler or Gonzalez playing next to him.
He needs a few days off, though.

He has a fantastic arm
but it’s not as run-preventing as Stout, Tracy, and Helmer were talking about post game. Nobody runs on him anymore – so I guess it’s run preventing, I take it back, but it’s not out-creating so much as we’d like to think.

He's like
really really really bad defensively. His range is pretty poor. He’s finished as one of the worst, if not the worst defensive outfielders the past few seasons. True, anything hit near him he catches, and current defensive metrics have trouble with Coors and are somewhat unreliable. His arm is spectacular, but how much worse would CarGo’s arm be? I’ve heard he has a pretty awesome arm, and his range is awesome. The difference between Hawpe and Cargo would be pretty significant.

Interestingly,
at least according to Fangraphs, the worst defensive player in the majors (or at least outfield) is Brad Hawpe, then Vernon Wells, and then Dexter Fowler.
Does anyone know whatsup with that? Is Dex really that bad? Are these growing pains? Does UZR just suck?

UZR has to suck
cause the eye test has Fowler a solid OF. No cannon for an arm, but plus, plus range.

If Fowler grades out as terrible again next season
I’ll start voicing my discontent with UZR, until then, I’ll take a wait and see approach because so far this is more the exception than the rule.

Before you just spout off "UZR has to suck"
try and understand it and see if you can point out its deficiencies. Nobody claims it to be a perfect metric, just the best we have so far.

Relative
Being the least sucky option isn’t the same as being good.
The fact that people don’t automatically dismiss specific instances of defensive metrics that clearly contradict the actual plays on the field (not to mention scouting reports, manager opinions, etc.) is just as scary as people who automatically accept wins and RBIs as the ultimate measure of success.
If people insist upon applying these metrics as if they were law then they are going to be held to a standard that results in any failure being met with hostility.

Chris Nelson
Doesn’t this start Chris Nelson’s service time clock? And wouldn’t the injury time have to go back to when he was hurt?
And if it does start Nelson’s service time, does this mean that the Rockies aren’t worried about controlling him?
by Redhawk on Sep 8, 2009 11:24 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Yes, it starts his clock. No, the injury time is not retroactive.
The Rockies have the option to make it retroactive (and would if they were trying to get him back before the season ended), but won’t and shouldn’t.
As for worries about Nelson’s service time, it’s going to be 30 days or so…he’s going to be an interesting decision for the Rockies as they decide who will get a spot on the 40 man roster next year and beyond.
