Non-Roster Invites

Just thought I'd start a Shot to discuss NRI. The only ones I'm aware of right now are Juan Rincon and Paul Phillips. I'm sure DOD will keep true to form and bring in a handful of pitchers to compete for that 5th spot too. As for which prospects could be invited, I presume that Rosario and Davis will be invited to help fill out the need for catchers. As far as pitchers, I think Friedrich and Weathers will be there and Brothers and Matzek are possibilities. May not be many hitters, though I could see Holcomb, who I think was down in the AFL be invited. I might be forgetting a couple others that were down in Arizona. Anyone know the date for C&P to report?? I can barely contain the excitement for 2010!

I'd be surprised to see Matzek

He’s pretty young, and I could see them wanting to seriously limit his innings this year. Seems a little early. Not my area of expertise though.

Instinctively I agree with Hizilla

Not sure of the upside of inviting Matzek. If he does well, that’s good obv but might raise both expectation and ego. If he does badly, it could have the opposite effect and be damaging to a fragile young talent. And as there’s zero chance of him making itto the show in 2010 I think we should focus on players with a better chance – it’d be great to discover that an AAA or AA player not projected as a frontline starter might have the necessary to do well for the team, or even get another Dex out of ST.

As far as I know

the club tends to invite the best prospects in the system to camp just to get a feel for things on the upper level. I know Weathers was there in 2008 after being drafted in 2007 (granted he is slightly more advanced than Matzek). I wouldn’t be surprised to see him and maybe Brothers in camp.

Fragile?

IMHO first round draft picks, especially starting pitchers, rarely are fragile in makeup. On the other hand, exposure to the big club gives young guys hope and adds confidence. You are right, zero (or close to zero) chance of being in Denver this year, but exposure to MLB in Tucson could pay dividends in 2011 and beyond.
