Question about Jhoulys Chacin from an AZ fan
Hey everyone! I'm currently doing research for an article for the Snakepit that compares the top pitching prospects in the NL West. According to Baseball America, Jhoulys Chacin is your number one pitching prospect. I need to know more about Jhoulys Chacin, since I don't know anything about him other than his stats. How hard does he throw? What pitches does he throw? How do you pronounce his first name? What are his strengths? What are his weaknesses? From an objective standpoint, what do you think his ceiling is? The more information I have, the less bias i'll have in the rankings. And no, I don't think Jarrod Parker is the best pitching prospect in the West. I'd have to say Bumgarner takes the cake right now. thanks in advance everyone, I eagerly await your answers.

You pronounce his name..
“Yuhleece Shaseen”
He throws a changeup and a FB in the low 90’s. I would compare him to a right handed Jeff Francis. He nearly threw a perfect game in Asheville. I wouldn’t say he’s the Rockies #1 pitching prospect, that would probably be Tyler Matzek, but he’s pretty good. Last year the organization rushed his development from AA to the Majors a little too quickly. He posted a BB/9 rate 4x higher than his career average while in the majors and looked a little too amped up hitting 93+ on his FB with a lot of wildness.

Whoops, he doesn't throw a changeup at 93..
it’s closer to 83.

Thanks for the info!
I thought matzek would be number one as well, but he has yet to make his pro debut. It’s hard to compare someone on a statistical level when he has no statistics! I will make a mention of that in my article though. I hope y’all come by and check out my article when it’s posted. I put a lot of research into my work, and I take great pride into having the best, most objective analysis as possible. The last article(s) i did was a 5 part series that covered the Dbacks draft, which was probably in my humble, and slightly biased opinion, the best last year. (the rockies had an excellent draft as well)
In this article, I’m trying to have as little bias as possible. If Parker hadn’t had TJ surgery, I’d personally given him the nod as the best, or tied as the best pitching prospect in the west(he has really really good stuff), but the surgery knocks him down a peg until he proves he can pitch like he did pre-injury.

Here is his
PitchFX data for his short time with the MLB club last year. As far as the highest rated pitching prospect in the West, I’d argue it’s Christian Friedrich, maybe would have put Parker second if he hadn’t gotten hurt – I think he’ll come back ok though.
John Sickles had some stuff on him through AA back in July.

Friedrich isn't even ranked as the rockies best pitching prospect...
at least according to BA. He is pretty good though….

Ringolsby
has him just behind Matzek, who really hasn’t done much outside of High School ball (as you said above), I’d have a tough time giving recent draftees a high ranking. I’m interested to see what Kevin Goldstein and John Sickles have to say about them. Either way, I’m pretty happy to have Chacin, Matzek and Friedrich in the system, not to mention Rogers and Deduno.
Looking forward to your article, I read over at the Pit quite a bit.

check out Casey Weathers and Rex Brothers, they might be better prospects then Esmil Rogers and Sam Deduno, Weathers was the closer at Vandy when David Price was there, both came from the same draft and if it wasn’t for Tommy John surgery there’s a good chance he would received the call to the bigs. I guess he was a rising star RP like you guys have once had in Dan Schlereth.
Too soon?

that was suppose to be the title of the comment above

Chacin’s fastball sits at 99 mph and can touch 103. His curveball averages 90 with 6 feet of break.
He throws a screwball that warps space and time, creating miniature black holes between the mound and the plate. This pitch is very hard to pick up, and has yet to have been put in play or fouled off by any batter ever. If he learns how to control it, he will throw perfect games every outing.
He makes Chuck Norris look like Michael Cera. He cures diseases in his free time. He is directly descended from Zeus.
As a prospect, he ranks behind only Matzek and Friedrich.

You forgto the part about
His extreme gap power, his base running abilities, and his ability to get on base. He also plays gold glove caliber defense at 2B. A conservative look at his 2010 stats look like…
33-0, 0.25ERA .02 WHIP, 20K/9, 400K
.380 AVG, .450OBP, 580 SLG, 55HR, 150 RBI, 55SB, and a gold glove at 2B.
Most likely 2nd in NL MVP voting to Pujols.
What makes you think even two batters will reach base on him?

No
He doesn’t yet have complete control over his black hole creating screwball. He will most likely suck a few batters up into the black hole. I assume they award the base if that happens.

Tricky to fit onto a scorecard. I hear fangraphs have already got a stat to deal with it.
hehehe
Dear Rockies- What a fun ride! Best comeback in MLB history to become NL Wild Card Champs.
Troy Tulowitzki-MLB's BEST shortstop..nuff said
Yorvit Torrealba-Our clutch has gone out, along with the best name in baseball. Sad Panda :(
Brad Hawpe- UZR isn't everything!
Dexter Fowler- The Bedazzler- Blinding speed, blinding smile, leaps Utleys in a single bound.
Math
So Chacin only goes a little over 5 innings per start (and he has to go at least 5 innings to get those 33 wins)? With 20 K/9 and only 400 Ks, he’s only pitching 180 innings.
Also, to have a .380 AVG and 55 HR, but only a .580 SLG, he would have to have 314 hits, and all of those hits other than the home runs would have to be singles.
If you’re going to make up completely unrealistic numbers for a player, make them a little realistic.

Friedrich was ranked ahead of Harry Bumguarder
In the final prospect hot sheet on baseballamerica.com Friedrich ranked no. 8, one stop ahead of Madison. It seems they still favor MB over CF but there were some questions arising about his drop in velocity and a lot of people are questioning if he can refine his secondary pitches and be more then a one horse show
