Rockies avoid arbitration with Clint Barmes and Taylor Buchholz

The Denver Post's Troy Renck is reporting that shortstop Clint Barmes and reliever Taylor Buchholz have agreed to terms and will be signing 2010 contracts with the Rockies, avoiding arbitration hearings. The Rockies still have to work out contracts with Ryan Spilborghs, Rafael Betancourt, Jason Hammel, Huston Street and Jorge De La Rosa or face arbitration hearings for those five.

Renck says that he will update later today with terms, so keep an eye on the Post's blog for that.

UPDATE: Apparently, the team is also pretty close to reaching an agreement with De La Rosa.

oops, forgot Betancourt at first.

Buchholz and Barmes were probably the easiest two of our seven arb-eligibles.

Solid deals

I worry most about a deal for Street and to a lesser extent JDLR. It’s going to be hard to keep Street but not overpay (in my opinion).

by phishbate on Jan 14, 2010 1:59 PM MST up reply actions

Well we will keep him no matter what right?

It’s just gonna be hard not piss him off too much.

I don't want to spark an argument about closer value

but given how volatile the closer job is and how the “good” pitchers can fluctuate greatly from year to year, I just worry about giving a closer a large long term contract. Street was incredible last year, will probably be very good in 2010 and is still young but I don’t want to see the type of huge deal that overvalues him that usually happens with closers.

by phishbate on Jan 14, 2010 3:31 PM MST up reply actions

I agree with you

I just think Steet’s gonna get pissed off it the Rockies tell him this.

He may already be upset from the negotiations

I know the FO said a while ago as the talks stalled that they’re open to trading him at the deadline if they can’t work out an extension. I don’t think I ever saw actual numbers apart from speculation though.

by phishbate on Jan 14, 2010 3:38 PM MST up reply actions

I didn't see actual numbers either

but i heard the same stuff. This is one player where things unfortunately have the chance to get ugly.

I also think this is a spot the Rox are going to keep us nervous

We do have to people capable of filling a "closer " role but all are huge IF’s to produce and excel in such a big part of the game…Especially for us fans.

Arggggg, thats what I need to get through the off-season…

Still, Street’s probably more an Emo’s and Beauty Bar kid than a Steamboat/Liberty Lunch stoner. Or maybe not.

Indeed

Barmes’ defense alone is pretty valuable and it’s a reasonable salary for Bucky as he tries to bounce back off surgery. Another set of good deals from the FO.

Definetly good signs

I agree with the points phishbate has made especially with Huston, which I don’t think anybody will be suprised if he doesn’t get locked up and sign elsewhere in the future.

As for Barmes, I like the signing, but as pointed out earlier I don’t like the idea of him getting bigger pay numbers for the amount of production we can expect from him. But unless he starts become more consistent offensivly I’ll have a hard time keeping him on at a $5-$6 million tag especially with the young talent behind him. All in all though, for the 2010 Rockies, it’s well received.

I love the guy.

Had a fantastic rookie season, gets (unfortunately wow Todd :P) hurt, and comes back and has a good season this year. He has great defense…and if our reports come through with us signing Tatis I will like that deal a lot. I say he has a better glove and D game than Hanley does

relativeto thier position…Hanley doesn’t really do much for me at SS, in a limited sample size observation…

Of course I like my Shortstops to be able and willing to track down a ball anywhere from 3rd base seats to halfway to 1st and throw you out from left field….

Also leap mountains in a single bound

For the average fan to run around and have Rockies moments.
The workers are friendly the ball players are cool, especially the young guys and I really like Tuscon.

I did every NL West stadium in 6 weeks this year

Last weekend in August was SF when we got swept and Renteria hit the grand slam-not a great start.

Then I went to Coors to watch the Seth Smiths, I mean Rockies, kill the Dbacks.

Then it was SD to watch the first start of Esmil Rogers.

Then Phoenix, we won both games but I don’t remember much besides a Tulo and a Giambi home run.

They were off the next weekend but came back to LA for the last 4 of the season VS the Dodgers.

It was about the best thing ever. My favorite part was waking up in Phoenix and forgetting what city I was in.

I talked to alot of (excuse the word) “old-timers” there who do a ST trip every year for decades and they talk how Hi-corbet is more like how it used to be “back in the day” with fan accessibility.

by CentralCaliRox on Jan 14, 2010 6:51 PM MST up reply actions

Renck projects Street to make around 7 million, and Betancourt to make “South of 5 million” (I’ll leave it as $5 million as a sort of worst case scenario. That’s another 12, which takes us to 75, right around our payroll last year. Factoring in Spilly and Hammel, that could easily be another 5-6 million, putting us around 80, plus team control players at around $400,000 each, we could very easily see a payroll at $85 million, which is a $10 million pay increase from last year and the highest payroll in team history.

This just goes to show how sad the financial imbalance is in MLB right now

Here we are as Rockies fans concerned about our payroll being around 85 million dollars and the highest in team history while the Yankees have already committed 82 million dollars to just their starting infield alone for this season. It’s amazing how different teams live in different worlds but are all competing for the same prize.

Outside of the Helton bump, which is painful, only Corpas fits as a questionable expenditure at this point and it could turn out that he’s as valuable an asset to the team in 2011 at a smaller cost than what we’re likely to pay Betancourt in 2010. The other commitments are to three members of the starting rotation (assuming Francis’ option gets picked up), Tulo and Iannetta. Tulo will still be getting paid less than he’s worth, Iannetta will be getting less than we were offering Torrealba.

Our starting rotation will cost less than it does now assuming one of our prospects takes over JDLR’s slot, and the bullpen’s likely going to be cheaper as well assuming we lose both Street and Betancourt. I think the big number looks scary because of the $19 million to Helton, but the rest is spread out to important core parts of the franchise.

by Rox Girl on Jan 14, 2010 8:45 PM MST up reply actions

I guess what I'm trying to suggest is that the team would be in a much worse position financially in 2011

if it didn’t have that non-Helton money committed. Tulo’s and Jimenez’s arb awards would be huge, and trying to add parts while dealing with the unknowns in that would put us in a similar spot to the one that San Fran has been going through this winter. Cook would probably be a little bit cheaper in this market, but not much given Randy Wolf’s contract, and Francis’ option is definitely more than worth it if he rebounds this year.

Corpas is debatable and it depends entirely on how he performs in 2010, but I think where we have committed money has mostly been sound and does give the team some flexibility. Most importantly, it’s shifting the outside needs of the team to places where bargains should be found more readily because there are so many players available (utility infielder, bullpen). I’m just glad we didn’t sign Holliday and only inked Hawpe through his arbitration period. I’d be much more upset if our money was tied up in more aging corners.

Cot's is great, except for their extremely slow service time updates.

They should really put a note when it was last updated. All of the values right now are from before 2009, so they’re not up to date.

by Greg Stanwood on Jan 14, 2010 7:32 PM MST up reply actions

oh I know, that's my complaint as well

it’s hard to find a good source for service times.

But their contract info is extremely accessible

The new moon was yesterday, therefore:
Two weeks from yesterday is January 29. Four days after that is February 2.

Charlie77 must wait until February 2 to find out.

I want to throw this out here...

with Carlos Beltran out of the Mets’ lineup till at least June if not July. What are the chances the Rockies could trade Spillborghs or Hawpe for one or two good prospects. And should we get pitching, outfield, infield or catching prospects?

Another interesting link.

June if not July?

It’s just 12 weeks. He’s expected to be fully rehabbed and back on the team by 3 weeks into the season at worst…

by Greg Stanwood on Jan 14, 2010 11:16 PM MST up reply actions

I don't think so

WFAN was reporting that that 12 weeks was incredibly optimistic, and it could be more like 16+, and then he needs to go to extended spring training, so June is looking a lot more realistic.

I do see the NYT estimates May, but that's still not June or July.

I don’t expect the Mets to make some sort of trade out of desperation. They’ll just toss Pagan in there or something.

by Greg Stanwood on Jan 15, 2010 12:16 AM MST up reply actions

The question is does it keep him out long enough that he has to go through

extended ST because once it gets to that point thats a lot more time. With the Mets I would always assume worse case scenario though.

Anyway

the main point of my comment was optimistic wishful thinking of fleecing the Mets. As long as Omar Minya the GM and the going is good, lets get going (fleecing that is).
“Here is Johann Santana for Keith Weiser, Omar. Do we have a deal?”-Dan O’Dowd<./i>
“Sure, toss is in Dan Ortmeier and we can shake on it.”-Omar
“Wait, you serious? You haven’t been drinking, have you?- Dan O’Dowd
”Nope but I got my PEN. Lets get er done." Omar Minya

Omar signs off on the trade deal and passes out. O’Dowd walks off with a Johann Santana and shirt that says, "I’ve fleeced the Mets! (Again)"

You should listen to Mike Francesa at 11AM - 4PM your time during baseball season

He’s a pompous, arrogant, obnoxious, egomaniac but he’s almost always right and the entertainment value is second to none.
