I don't like the direction this is going with George of the Rose

I’m all for having him back, hopefully pitching to expectations, but I think this is not setting up well for the Rockies after 2010. If he goes big this season then he is going to be hard to retain as a free-agent next offseason, the only thing in this situation I see in this situation that favors the Rockies is the quality of next years pitching market will be much better then this years so many teams won’t list him on the top of their pitching wish lists.

I guess I’m just concerned that DLR won’t build off last year very well and the Rockies will end up getting stuck in a low reward situation.

If a woman has to choose between catching a fly ball and saving infant's life, she will choose to save the infant's life without even considering if there is a man on base.

by KDub1988 on Jan 15, 2010 8:41 AM MST reply actions

Look at it this way

—it’s only for one year
—we’re paying him about half of what we are paying Cook
—we have plenty of candidates to take his place next year
—he was severely underpaid last year based on his performance, so we already come out ahead on this deal
—he should be worth at least one free draft pick at the end of the year

We’ve already won on this deal.

Attention Whore.

by Muzia on Jan 15, 2010 8:59 AM MST up reply actions

You basically said everything I was going to,

I would also add that this is where the Rockies patience with their pitching prospects will pay off, as players like Friedrich and Chacin will more likely be ready to step into a big league rotation and be valuable than they would be if they had been rushed.

by Rox Girl on Jan 15, 2010 9:02 AM MST up reply actions

The other thing too is that if he's underperforming early,

the Rockies themselves likely would be as well and the team would be more inclined to trade him at the deadline. His value as a rental would be pretty high, higher than what we traded for him (Ramon Ramirez) two years ago.

by Rox Girl on Jan 15, 2010 9:05 AM MST up reply actions

that would have been my next point

but I don’t feel like considering that possibility on the morning I purchase my Opening Day tickets.

Was up for doing that too

Until the only available seats that I keep getting are in Secs 140 – 144 for $100 a throw.

by Since1993 on Jan 15, 2010 12:17 PM MST up reply actions

I'm not dissing the move at all

We had to bring him back at a cost at some point. I guess I’ve just seen the progression of him going from a annual rotation holder to a pitcher in our rotation who’s getting closer to being out the door.

Kind of like with Street, I want him on the club as long as we can keep him but that’s not going to keep me from seeing the writing on the wall. Also if George tanks, his value will decrease, possibly immensly if he has a Fransisco Liriano-type fall from grace (which I don’t think will be the case/as severe because Liriano did a complete 180 from where he was when he first came in the league).

And I agree that our pitching depth totally will absorb most of the impact if things don’t work with either this deal or in terms of not being able to keep DLR on. Also, I’ve never been good at determining between Type A and B FA but am I wrong to get the impression he’ll probably be a B?

If a woman has to choose between catching a fly ball and saving infant's life, she will choose to save the infant's life without even considering if there is a man on base.

by KDub1988 on Jan 15, 2010 9:14 AM MST up reply actions

He's currently a Type B, tied for 35th with Randy Johnson among NL starting pitchers

To be a Type A he’d have to be 21st or higher. Your scenario that has him pitching well enough to bolt as a FA likely would imply he improves his rank, whether it would be enough to push him into the Type A category could be interesting, as that cutoff might make it more likely that he returns to the Rockies (ala Betancourt) as the loss of a draft pick could limit his free agent appeal.

by Rox Girl on Jan 15, 2010 9:24 AM MST up reply actions

you don't think a dynamic lefty in his prime

would demand a high price in FA?

If he somehow pitches himself to Type A status, he gets a fat contract somewhere.

Attention Whore.

by Muzia on Jan 15, 2010 9:26 AM MST up reply actions

I agree, I just think if he's a borderline case, say he lucks into a lot of wins in 2010

thanks to run support, the switch from Type B to Type A might cost him some leverage with teams that value draft picks. Less competition for him increases the likelihood that the Rockies retain him, even if that likelihood remains slim.

Jose Valverde just got 2 yrs/$14 mil

I’d put Street’s likely award, if he goes to arbitration, about
midway between Bell & Valverde.

I also will go out on a limb & say that Valverde will end up not being worth what he got from Detroit. Despite his save numbers, he had a lot of shaky outings for Houston last year. He has Fuentes/Lidge tendencies & they’re going to catch up with him at some point.

I saw that list of prospects in the links,

and it got me to wondering: how is Casey Weathers doing? Is he fully recovered now, and what is his ETA in the majors? Also, can he still be a good reliever/closer, or is he just average now?

by RoxnSox09 on Jan 15, 2010 9:40 AM MST reply actions

I'm not an authority on this

But I do know he had suffered a set back or two in his recovery, but he is still progressing. I’m not sure if he is throwing yet. Last I heard, he may be ready by midseason, but I feel they may not send him to the majors this year. Safer bet for his ETA is next season.

I thought I had read recently that he was doing some work this fall and should be ready by ST. I may be mistaken here, but I was under the impression it was just a matter of building up arm strength now.

I don’t think he will be picked up that quickly, before spring training i’m sure but aside from the Cardinals I don’t see a competitive team making him an offer soon. Sure Oakland and Pitt and Toronto or Baltimore (maybe? just a guess really) could throw an offer at him but if he wants to be on a winner I don’t think he’ll sign until right before spring

Depends

If they can somehow work out a trade (which sounds unlikely) then they might not eat it all. More likely from what’s being reported is that they’ll just outright release him which means they’ll be paying his base salary, then another club could pick him up for the league minimum.

Baseball, rather obviously, is a popular sport. An immensely popular sport. But it’s a sport that attracts particular sorts of people. It doesn’t have hockey’s speed or blend of skill and strength. It doesn’t have basketball’s pace or high scoring. It doesn’t have football’s ability to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Buahahaha!

As such, it has a tempo all its own, and while it’s this tempo and thinking-man’s appeal that draws a lot of us in, it’s also the very thing that pushes a lot of people away. If you don’t like baseball because it’s too slow or too boring, chances are no one will ever be able to change your mind.

This part is so true. I have a friend who absolutely hates baseball simply because it’s slow and boring, and despite my best efforts, he’ll never change his mind.

Caution: Colorado teams are better than they appear.

by ShadowPenguin on Jan 15, 2010 1:51 PM MST up reply actions

Ok, actually finished reading it

And on the whole, I disagree with his ideas.
Replay – That’s alright with me. Give teams 2 challenges a game for review.
Pitcher pace on mound – This is actually one thing my friend bitches about. Penalizing throws to first? Working slow? These are just complaints due to our societies short attention spans and wanting everything NOW!
Mid-inning pitching changes – Guh, this one is most annoying. Yeah, let’s remove the strategy in the game with the ROOGY and LOOGY pitchers just because you have to watch some commercials. I think it raises the tension because it burns a pitcher, and what if it doesn’t work? What if the game goes to extra innings and a team is in trouble cuz they burned 3 pitchers in one inning?
Penalize IBBs – WTF? Umm, strategy is the name of the game. Penalizing the IBB is penalizing a chess player who moves out of checkmate by sacrificing a pawn. We’re giving up a base. Maybe if your #3 hitter didn’t strike out earlier, then we wouldn’t have the opportunity to face the pitcher with the bases loaded.
Even Leagues, Condense Playoffs, and Equalize Payrolls – Lumped these together cuz I think they were alright. Evening the leagues would be a weird schedule, but still possible. Playoffs are way too long, Reggie Jackson was not Mr. November. Payrolls definitely need work, a floor and ceiling with harsh luxury taxes could work.
PEDs - This part makes absolutely zero sense. PEDs are ok if they’re not secret? Lasik is a PED because it fixes vision to a STANDARD BASELINE of vision? At this point, he seems just to a be a hack writer who truly doesn’t know the game.
Sliding collisions – There can’t really be that many collisions throughout a season, and middle infielders and catchers put in extensive work learning their positioning and footwork to avoid these very collisions. Overreaction at its best. Lets have all fielders wear helmets and chest protectors too because baseballs can be hit hard.
HBP penalties – Any time someone is seriously hurt by a pitch, you can bet it’s an accident. Try throwing a ball as hard as you can 100 times and hit the same area every time. Yeah, not gonna happen. Penalizing an accident is stupid, and intentional bean balls are already handled by the umps and the league in ejecting and suspending the offenders.

In conclusion, that guy either never played the game, is a new fan of the game, or was stretching way too hard to get his ten bulletpoints.

Caution: Colorado teams are better than they appear.

by ShadowPenguin on Jan 15, 2010 2:19 PM MST up reply actions

Give teams 2 challenges a game for review

I don’t like that idea. Makes it too much like football, and it’s kind of dumb to limit how many times you can challenge a call. If the umpires keep making mistakes, keep correcting them. I’d rather just have a replay guy in a centralized location in communication with the crew chief to tell him if a play is being reviewed and/or overturned.

by controlled_slide on Jan 15, 2010 2:33 PM MST up reply actions

Oh, didn't think about that

Like the replay official in hockey. If it’s a close one, the home plate ump goes over to the phone, talks to the man upstairs, and comes back with the official call.
Yeah, that’d work out much better.

Caution: Colorado teams are better than they appear.

by ShadowPenguin on Jan 15, 2010 2:34 PM MST up reply actions

Please, God, don't expand replay. This is a game played and judged by humans.

The human error by players, umpires and managers is part of what makes this game great. I hate it when the call goes against my team. I gritch about it but I know that’s part of the game. Besides if we had replay, we’d never have need for another Earl Weaver.

Replay? No thanks.

Decent article

I agree with some things, disagree with others. The thing that surprised me was his bit about intentional walks, and he used Bonds, Pujols and, of all people, Ichiro as his examples. I was like “Whaa? Has this guy even seen a baseball? Ichiro? Has Ichiro ever been intentionally walked? He’s not exactly a huge power threat.” Then I looked at his Baseball Reference page. Turns out he’s led the AL in intentional walks 3 times, including last year. Shows what I know. Then later in the article, he professed to being a Mariners fan, so the Ichiro reference made more sense.

by ShadowPenguin on Jan 15, 2010 2:22 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah, theoretically

But the batter can already move himself around in the batters box more than an inch. So unless a batter is already at the extreme aft end of the box, moving it an inch doesn’t change a thing. And really, an inch is not very much. It’s not a very well thought out opinion.

by controlled_slide on Jan 15, 2010 2:23 PM MST up reply actions

Looking at this

I think that I was thinking “move the batters box back an inch or so” meant back toward the catcher, giving the batter a little extra reaction time. You’re reading it as back away from the plate. I don’t know which he meant – probably away from the plate – but it still doesn’t make too much sense. Maybe it would help reduce HBPs, but really it would just give the pitcher that much more of the inside of the plate.

by controlled_slide on Jan 15, 2010 2:29 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah, I read it as

back the batter off the plate an inch so it’s harder to lean in and get hit. Which is a ridiculous argument in itself.

Caution: Colorado teams are better than they appear.

you are right

I was thinking of it moving away from the plate…but you are right…it doesn’t make much sense…esp. with not getting hit.

I really cannot tell if this guy is serious or not
In order to keep the game moving forward, I think pitchers should be timed, pickoffs should be penalized (after the first one), and mound visits should be limited.

So the rest of the game, the runner on first shouldn’t even bother to lead off? Or just let him run free? Does he not get that throwing to first isn’t just to give the pitcher a break or delay the game? Does he not understand its also done to disrupt the hitter’s timing?

good lord I rolled my eyes at this one…

by A.J. Haefele on Jan 15, 2010 7:26 PM MST up reply actions

This is VERY false.

Ovie impacts the game in ways Crosby cannot begin to touch. Crosby is a great player and I want to make very clear I’m not saying anything otherwise but if you were to start a team tomorrow, Ovechkin should be the pick. I realize I also hold the theory that Centers >>>>>>>> Wings but in this case Ovechkin is that good. Ovechkin’s defensive game is overall much more of a factor than Crosby’s solid play. Crosby is a sound defensive player in his own right and while you can debate the legality of Ovie’s defensive play at times, he certainly makes more things happen. Crosby does his job defensively, but Ovie takes his defense and turns it into instant offense in a way you simply don’t see from goal-scoring wingers (Sup Kovalchuk).

Offensively you could call them about even because they both produce at an amazing level. Crosby scores his fair share of goals and as a playmaking center pots plenty of assists along the way whereas Ovie fits the high-goal scoring winger mold (Sup Pavel Bure) and he simply does his job better than anyone out there. That’s where I really think, other than defensively, Ovie separates himself from Crosby. Crosby is a great player but I don’t think it’s definitive that he is the very best at his position whereas I think Ovechkin stands in the “God Tier” of current wingers and everyone else is “Elite Tier” or lower.

A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.

It's ironic in a way

but the very thing that bores many people when it comes to baseball (The slow pace of play and the anticipation for each pitch) is the very thing that makes it the most exciting sport of all in tense spots. A ten pitch at bat in the 4th inning of an April game with men on first and second and two out might anger the casual fan and make them say “just put the ball in play already”. But a ten pitch at bat in the 9th inning of a September pennant race game with men on first and second and two out will give every fan in the stadium a heart attack. It’s baseball’s ability to extend the drama of these situations that makes it the greatest sport ever created. With no clock, it leaves more possibilities open for the fans to agonize over; and since there is time between each foul ball, the fans will agonize over each and every one of those possibilities.

No sport can keep you on the edge of your seat like baseball can.

One of the ways in which cricket is better than baseball

Is that the captain of the fielding team can construct his field in almost any way, depending on who’s bowling, who’s batting, the condition of the outfield, whether the opposition needs to score runs quickly etc. For example, if you need to take the wicket of a poor batsman who’s unlikely to make many big shots, you can position several men very close to the bat, in the hope that he’ll just nick the ball when trying to hit or defend. I’ve seen games where 7 of the 9 available fielders are clustered around the batsman!

by biondino on Jan 17, 2010 7:51 AM MST up reply actions

This is true

I would say that cricket is the only sport that comes close close in this regard. I’m not sure how I feel about matches taking days and teams beating each other by over 100. Wouldn’t that get kind of boring?

"There's no clock in baseball and we proved it" Clint Hurdle after the 22 inning game.

by RhodeIslandRoxfan on Jan 16, 2010 1:02 PM MST up reply actions

That was my reaction as well

I also rolled my eyes when he said that if a pitcher accidentally beans a batter, the batter gets 2 bases and the pitcher is immediately ejected and suspended. Not only is penalizing an accident kind of stupid, but it also made no sense to me that he wanted to eliminate mid-inning pitcher changes, but then wanted to institute this ejection rule. If a pitcher is ejected in the middle of an inning for accidentally hitting someone, looks like you’re sitting through another commercial break…

I disagreed with most of the article, actually, but these ones riled me the most.
