Rockies attend Turnbow’s workout today | All Things Rockies
I don't really have much of a problem with this. Dan O'Dowd has shown that he has good judgment with bullpen arms, and a possible deal with Derrick Turnbow would probably be no different. It looks like the club has learned a lot about needing bullpen depth over the past couple of years, as opposed to the old strategy of forcing 3 or 4 guys to throw their arms off.

That was quick. After looking for help in narrowing it down a couple of nights ago, John Sickels has now posted his Rockies organizational top 20. Nobody rates higher than a B+, but in typical Rockies fashion, they have a whole bunch of guys in the B-range. I get the feeling that Sickels really likes a lot of the guys in the system, but feels most of them are too raw to really grade out. I would agree - a local scout (and all-around well-respected baseball guy) that I know sincerely thinks the Rockies have more good, raw talent than any other organization in baseball. And, that was before the club signed Tyler Matzek.

Our system definitely needs a good restocking as far as position player depth goes

simply because if you look at the team, Iannetta, Fowler, Gonzalez, Stewart, and Smith are all already up, so everyone else is kind of pushing to develop

Good point

I think the June 2010 Draft will probably be heavily focused on drafting position players. It seems like we have enough pitching right now to last us a 5 years or more.

Though I mentioned it last year before draft time...

… the biggest depth hole in the organization still seems to be corner infielders. We have Kindel and Holcomb, with last year’s Arenado behind them. I’d still like some more.

O'Dowd

would probably trade for corner infielder prospects if a trade deal comes up involving wither Hawpe, Street and/or Spillborghs.

I guess the good news is that a good pitcher in baseballs are like queens in chess. Everybody wants one.

I HATE Mark Kiszla. Hate him.

It’s not that he’s a miserable writer or whatever, but his pieces are never fair. He only writes anything when he can tear a team down. And therefore, he’s a hatchet man and I don’t even bother reading his articles.

Absorb the salary hit this this season (it won’t be too bad), hope he has another great season and scoop up that draft pick you get when he signs with someone else. For the Rockies, those extra picks every year are probably the best way to stay competitive as a franchise long term.

Hold on to him, and let the Type A status kill him like Betancourt this year

A first rounder and a comp pick is better than we’ll get in a trade, and if Type A kills him, we might get him to a better contract than he wants even right now.

Impossible not to have positive thoughts.

I think we could presumably get more return in a midseason trade from a contender, should we fall out of the race.

So I wouldn’t rule that option out.

Fantasy baseball question with lots of Rockies

Im in an NL-only league with 10 teams. I have the opportunity to trade for Eric Young, Seth Smith and Jason Hammel. The other guy wants James Loney. All players are at dirt cheap prices, and I can keep Young in my minors….Should I do it???

Standard 10 categories

Hr, RBI, BA, Runs, SB
W, Sv, Ks, ERA, WHIP

Obviously the risk on my end is playing time.

Oh one other factor, Loney is at the end of his contract. Can’t have him after this season. I could have Young for up to 5 seasons, and Smith and Hammel for up to 4 seasons each.

I decided to do the trade. Still worried about Seth Smith’s playing time….hoping Hawpe is benched or trade. But jeez, Smith outhomered Loney last season in about 300 less at-bats.

And the offer made me take a hard look at Jason Hammel. He doesn’t suck as much as I thought he did. I have him for only $1, so he just might sneak his way onto my list of 13 keepers.

Hammel had quite a season last year

He set the Rockies’ franchise record for K/BB, and RMN wrote a story a few months ago, analyzing all #4 and #5 starters against well over a dozen sabermetric and traditional statistics, averaging the rankings. Hammel was better than every MLB #4 and #5 except Jeff Niemann and Tommy Hanson. Here is the article. It will be interesting to see how he backs up his 2009.
