Monday Rockpile: Biding time until Purple Row unveils its secret later today
Today's the day Purple Row will reveal its latest secret (you know, the one RMN and I have hinted about over the last week). Y'all are going to like this one. But while we wait for RMN to post it, here are a couple of links to start your day:
Inbox: How will the outfield shake up? | ColoradoRockies.com: News
Thomas Harding answered three questions in his latest mailbag:
- The outfield is going to be Brad Hawpe and Carlos Gonzalez at the corners with Dexter Fowler spelled by CarGo in center when necessary. Seth Smith will play in left (vague), and Ryan Spilborghs is the X-factor (Simon Cowell's already grooming him).
- Spring Training will determine the playing time split between Chris Iannetta and Miguel Olivo.
- Huston Street is a candidate to be traded during the season, but don't expect it if the team is in the playoff race.
Jerry Hairston Jr to sign with San Diego Padres - MLB News - FOX Sports on MSN
Mentioned in yesterday's Rockpile, the Padres are close to signing Jerry Hairston Jr., reuniting him with his brother, Scott. This just in: The Padres aren't world-beaters.

You two have some obvious hints on the surprise, at least from my end
I wonder if anyone has put it together.
Also,
Spring Training will determine the playing time split between Chris Iannetta and Miguel Olivo
I sure hope the conclusion doesn’t bear any weight past April. A month of the regular season is far more telling towards who is deserving than a month of scattered play against AA pitchers

I'm guessing Dex is getting the "super high upside prospect" treatment
I mean, he was highly touted in our system, and jumped straight from AA to the bigs. They might be looking at him as their best prospect still. Even though Gonzalez is a better all around player, he hasn’t been in the system as long.

In a way
But I also like that they’re committed to their prospects and want to build fan excitement for them.
Basically, the only thing that I really want the Rockies to do with the outfield situation next year is give Smith a real shot and bench and/or trade Hawpe if Smith produces more (defensively and offensively). If they also give Gonzalez more chances in center to prove that he’s a better option than Dex, that would also be great, but I think that Dex will be good enough in center that it won’t make that much difference.
by controlled_slide on Jan 18, 2010 10:50 AM MST up reply actions
true enough
but remember that Smith was a prospect as well, former 2nd round pick.
Gonzalez was also a highly regarded prospect with Arizona and Oakland, made apparent by the fact he headlined a deal that sent away one of our best players ever.
Loyalty and commitment to prospects just means they’re not gonna go sign a FA and supplant him. They’ve done that. Now that these guys are up, though, they need to pick who the best guys for the job are. I’m not 100% convinced that a full-time guaranteed Fowler is that. I think he CAN be, but he has so many things to work out still, I’m concerned he’ll flounder and we’ll be stuck.

I agree
Although I think that I allow a little more leeway than you do for these things.
It seems to me that there’s a sort of generally agreed-upon line of thinking that baseball teams get into and the writers and TV affiliates all kind of jump on the bandwagon, which pulls most of the casual fans along into it.
A good example is up here in Washington. The Mariners signed Griffey last year, and all of the fans were super excited and reminisced about him stealing home runs and his gorgeous swing. Then, even when it was apparent that he was no longer the power threat that he once was, they still ran ads on the local FSN station touting stuff like “the Yankees come to town to face Ichiro and Griffey this weekend” like Griffey is still one of the best hitters in the game. Radio stations talked about him like he was winning games with his bat all the time, and at the stadium they would play up late-inning situations with him. It’s like everyone is aboard the train, and I don’t know how it happened.
So with the Rockies, there’s this whole “Dexter Fowler is super good at defense and is really fast” mantra that permeates the organization and trickles down through the writers to the fans, so they play Fowler in center because that’s where he’s “supposed” to play and because he’s a fan favorite. I’m not trying to say that they indulge in groupthink, just that they seem particularly stubborn to change. Smith never had the hype that Fowler had, so he doesn’t get as much of a shot, even though his numbers are better than Fowler’s.
I wonder if any of that made sense to anyone but me.
by controlled_slide on Jan 18, 2010 11:47 AM MST up reply actions
True enough
but it’s not as if Fowler is KGJ, we don’t really have a that big pile of pent-up memories like we did with, say, Larry Walker, or hell, even 2007 Troy Tulowitzki.
Griffey probably sells an extra couple thousand tickets a game. Fowler…not so much, nobody except the fanatics really care about him, they just want to see him as a Rockies Player do well so the team wins.

I used Griffey as an example of a type
Not that Fowler is getting his chances for the same reason, but rather that he’s getting a bunch of hype that surrounds him. There was that “best of the Rockies” poll that came out after the season which included Fowler as one of the options for best fielder.
I don’t know where these notions come from, but they seem to influence decisions more than the numbers do.

Cargo love
on this site is amazing. He underwhelms for most of his professional career until he has a great half of one season and now it is a “G-d”. He had 6+ seasons in the minors and 1000 more minor league at bats than Dexter.
For all the proof that is shown on this site (IMHO an amazing amount) Cargo love seems irrational.
I love Cargo because it looks like he's starting to get a handle on his potential
and he’s already such a good OF defender that in the minors he’d get lazy on fly balls. Hardly a good thing, but I understand getting bored on stuff that seems easy to you. I feel Coors Field will be a good offensive inflater for him and a defensive challenge that’ll spur him to touch his ceiling, or at least closer to it.
And again, did you see how much he destroyed AAA

Understand
and hope you are right. I am really worried about his 2010 season for some “irrational” reason.
Yes he did great in his 3rd season (yes I realized not full seasons) in AAA at CS. Other two weren’t great.
CS is a pretty massive hitter's park, so they're inflated.
your concern is completely founded, I’m not trying to call you irrational. I’m high on him because for some reason I saw a maturity in him down the stretch that led my gut to think he’s gonna be productive in 2010. Not AS productive as he was down the stretch, but productive enough that he definitely should be starting.

I wrote a rockpile warning is to be wary of overhyping cargo. I’m mobile currently, so I can’t link it, but you can find it by clicking my name and then the blogs tab.
He was always a prospect whose potential exceeded his performance. Last fall had all the earmarks of him finally putting it together, and those numbers are absolutely real. I’m wary for 2010 to see how he adjusts to pitchers game planning for him, but he flashed the tools we don’t often see in one player
"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein
by Andrew T. Fisher on Jan 18, 2010 12:22 PM MST via mobile up reply actions
In a perfect world
No one would be overhyped to the point that they’re put in a lineup based only on their hype. Players would be played based solely on their actual production.
I don’t have a problem with getting all excited about a player and hoping for an MVP campaign, as long as those expectations are tempered with realism when a player underperforms to the point that he’s a detriment to the team.
by controlled_slide on Jan 18, 2010 12:26 PM MST up reply actions
the difficulty in this
Is determining a fair sample size in which to give a player to prove his worth. Players with more hype are probably more likely to fulfill a productive role, and I think that’s how it should be. Perfect examples are Tulo in 07 and Nix in 08. Both were abysmal, but Tulo deserved more time to figure it put, even outside of financial commitments. It would have been a mistake to send tulo to the minors after a month or to keep nix ofering through June.
"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein
by Andrew T. Fisher on Jan 18, 2010 12:38 PM MST via mobile up reply actions
Agreed
That’s what makes managing a baseball team tricky. There’s definitely no easy answer to how long one should give a struggling prospect. It paid off in ‘07, when Tulo came around to win the ROY and Gold Glove (he what? Really? Awwww), and this past year, when Gonzalez was given lots of chances and turned it on after the break. It’s a testament to how well the Rockies organization is run (or maybe luck, who knows), and I hope that it’s an omen of how the situation in the outfield will be run this year.
by controlled_slide on Jan 18, 2010 12:43 PM MST up reply actions
I'm not bummed at all
because they play 162 games and who starts in Game 1 is probably not going to be that big of a deal.
The hope from the org, presumably, is that Hawpe can get himself together in the offseason and put together another killer first half. I’m not at all worried that Tracy is too married to him and will play him if he struggles out of the gate. I mean, how many times has an all-star player been benched in the playoffs during the same season? I venture to guess almost never, and Tracy did that twice this year. In short, I doubt that he will sit Smith for long in favor of Hawpe if it becomes evident that it isn’t working out.
I’m generally on the side of those who thought it best that this offseason was the time to move Hawpe, but it didn’t happen. As such, right now it only makes sense that the long-term starter and defending all-star should have a chance to keep his position in spring training. I mean, despite his massive collapse last year, he still finished with an OPS over 900.
At the end of the day, this is a year where we are gunning for a title and nobody should be feeling secure about anything in terms of playing time. Sure, veterans should not feel secure just because they are vets, but likewise young promising kids should not get the benefit of the doubt because they are young and promising. The guys performing the best should be the guys that play. Period. But as in all sports, the young, “unproven” guy will have to beat out the incumbent. If we’re 20 games in and Smith is killing it yet sitting behind a struggling Hawpe, it will be time to start worrying. But for now, I want everyone gunning to earn the PT. Hawpe knows Smith is right behind him. True competition is best for everyone.
and one other thought
Smith is pedestrian (to put it nicely) on the road. Hawpe’s defense stinks. An impossible dream: a home/road platoon. Smith is a rampaging beast at Coors, and provides better defense in a park where it can really matter. Hawpe cruises along on the road, playing in smaller parks were his strong bat outshines the bad D.
Whatever, as with most position battles, you always end up wanting to combine attributes of the two players…
Completely agreed.

The whole thing was great but that was probably the pinnacle of it.

Hey you guys
I met this really cute reply link the other week. We’ve hung out together a lot, and she’s really cool, replying and linking all the time, you know how it is :) Anyway, I like her a lot, and I don’t want to rush things, but I think things are getting serious and I’m wondering if maybe we’re ready to move to the next level. What do you all think I should do?

Dude, I'd love to!
Most of my holiday time this year is taken up with my trip to Australia to meet my reply link’s girlfriend’s family, but I know last year she was looking to surprise me with a trip to Denver (I don’t think she knows how far it is) so you never know…
I know a Welshman from Cardiff..
who’s flying in to Tucson around ST time. Maybe you can fly with his carry-on baggage?

When's the Telluride Film festival...
Maybe I can spend all year plotting to have clients’ films showing at Telluride, thereby justifying my trip to Colorado…
Hmm, early September, interesting…
With all this reminscing. I went back and see that I joined on the day READ and LEARN was being skewered
I wonder if that’s why I joined….I don’t remember….
