Rockies sign Ryan Spilborghs to 2-year deal
Troy Renck reports that the Rockies and Ryan Spilborghs will avoid arbitration by agreeing to a two-year deal for $3.25 million.
Spilborghs was one of four Rockies ready to go to arbitration with the Rockies. The three remaining now are relievers Huston Street and Rafael Betancourt and starting Jason Hammel.

Will Spilborgh only get ABs vs lefties? Rockies have alot of lefty hitting OFers…..just realized that.

It will definitely be difficult for him to find playing time
He could start for a lot of teams but he has four OFers with better resumes ahead of him. He’ll certainly get ABs against lefties, but other than that, his PT will be one of the more interesting developments of the season

OH HAPPY DAY!!!! woot!
Dear Rockies- What a fun ride! Best comeback in MLB history to become NL Wild Card Champs.
Troy Tulowitzki-MLB's BEST shortstop..nuff said
Yorvit Torrealba-Our clutch has gone out, along with the best name in MLB. Sad Panda :(
Brad Hawpe- UZR isn't everything!
Dexter Fowler- The Bedazzler- Blinding speed, blinding smile, leaps Utleys in a single bound.
YAY! YAY! YAY!
I Spilly this news! Love the guy, and I’m doing a happy dance knowing that he’ll stay a Rockie. Thanks for the update, Russ!

Hopefully with a little oil and some rewiring, the Spil-borg 5000 will be up and running again in 2010.

But he's only a $3.25m man
Which means he’s likely to hit only about 55% of what Steve Austin would have hit.

Well
now we know our outfield will be, either that or it is setting up for a trade by signing him. This is a good thing, I like Spilly and I want to see him play.

Trade set up was exactly my first thought when I saw this.

Agree, trade.
That’s a pretty affordable corner/4th outfielder for the Phillies come an injury or July.
I really like this deal because it keeps an option of trading open
and if not, who could dislike having Spilly around for another two years at that salary.
Spilly ROX!
So happy for him and us. Would love it if this means the Rockies will actually let him compete for more playing time, even starting, and not be saddled with the 4th outfielder moniker. His total stats are better than some think
It won't
and carring a Hawpe trade, he would be the fifth outfielder

Given the platoon necessities
we almost have 2 4th OF rather than a 5th, but your point is well taken.

Reports are coming in that Spilly celebrated his new contract by
growing yet another style of beard that has never been seen.

Okay, this irrationally annoys me
But who are the two Rockies players standing near where the ball lands, and why don’t they celebrate?
The two Rockies there are
Jim Wright: Bullpen Coach
Josh Fogg(?): Reliever warming up
Briefly Seen Holding Hands Up:
Mark Strittmatter(?): Bullpen Catcher
JFK
From what I can tell
Their numbers are 55 and 34, which would make them Jim Wright the bullpen coach and Matt Belisle respectively.
As for why they aren’t celebrating, I couldn’t tell you.
by controlled_slide on Jan 19, 2010 3:04 PM MST up reply actions
Belisle makes sense
nice catch, I’m on a small, low res monitor so I couldn’t tell who they were but Fogg hadn’t been in the game up to that point so I figured it might be him.
JFK
Matt Belisle made the catch
(which is still on my DVR so I reviewed for this discussion :) )
Upon further review, they did in fact high five each other :)

Because I doubt that you're going to repond to any of these arguments
I’m gonna go ahead and pretend like you made the argument that the grand slam was one game and he grounded into double plays alllllll the time. So I went through his game logs on Baseball Reference to figure out whether his grand slam outweighs all of his double plays. Therefore, according to Baseball Reference’s calculations of WPA:
1 Game-winning grand slam: WPA = +66%
9 GIDP: WPA = -84%. But one of those double plays just happened to be in the game in which he hit his grand slam, and it was a doozy, the worst of the bunch at -33% WPA. So, we take that out and get:
8 GIDP: WPA = -51%
So that one grand slam outweighed all of the times he grounded into double plays last year.

and like you said most of them are about trashing one of our players with no evidence to back it up.

Just checking in after a busy weekend to say I'm glad we singed Spilly through through two of his arb years
Arbitration can be a nasty process and I’m glad that the Rockies now have four of their seven arb eligible players under contract without having to go through that ordeal.

He deserves a lot of credit for that too because it's important to not have a large chunk of your
players upset with the team because of the way contracts were handled. The Rockies could have had five or six guys going to arb and all of a sudden you have the possibility of 20% of the guys in the clubhouse everyday potentially telling other players how tight the organization is when it comes time to pay for a new contract. Now the most guys we can have going to arb is three and there are already four players who should be happy with with the team and spreading positive feelings about that to teammates.

With Atkins gone there has been talk of Hawpe backing up helton. I think he played infield in college or highschool
That frees up a few more at bats for spilly and seth smith.
Hawpe was actually a 1B in the Rockies minor league system, not just before.
The last time he professionally played at 1B was with the Drillers in 2003. It’s not at all a stretch that he can be re-trained as an emergency backup (which he will be during ST), however, I still expect a free agent corner infielder to be signed, if not to a major league contract, then as an NRI, to give us our final bench spot.

Welcome to the Row
In response to you liking Payne Stewart I have a cool story about him.
In 1999 when the Ryder Cup was held in Brookline Massachusetts my dad took me to one of the practice rounds. During this particular practice round Payne Stewart’s foursome was playing a best ball match to prepare for the upcoming tournament. The match was all square when the group came to the final hole which was a long and difficult Par-4 that had an elevated green and a huge sand trap in front. To make a long story short, Payne ended up in that bunker in two shots. I was standing behind the back left portion of the green and all I could see was that classic old golfer’s hat he used to wear. The rest of his body was hidden by that deep, deep, trap. The next thing I know a ball comes popping out of there, takes a couple of bounces, and just as it’s about to run out of speed drops into the hole. That shot won the match (practice round so it didn’t mean anything but still) and the gallery went nuts. (I guess it was just a preview of the heroics to come from that week. Sorry biondino) The shot was crazy though. I mean from where he was anything within 30 feet of the hole would have been good shot. You could have given him 100 more chances to hit a ball from that same spot and he probably would not have made another one. It was that good.
Anyway just a childhood memory I had of Payne Stewart. It’s what I always think of whenever I see his name.

We should have a Ryder cup thread this Fall
if the Rockies have already clinched the division by that point. It falls on the last week of the regular season this year so the Rockies might have nothing to play for and could just be waiting for the postseason. That’s what I’m hoping for anyway because it will be very stressful if I have watch both the Ryder Cup and the Rockies battling for a playoff spot that weekend.
