Actually

they Betancourt deal doesn’t seem too bad. The Street one still seems pricey for a mid-market team reliever. Street would essentially have to duplicate his 2009 season for every year of the contract for the Rockies to break even with it.

What’s most curious is that we locked both of these guys up for the next two seasons. You’d think with Corpas, Morales, Buchholz, Weathers, and Brothers, the need to lock up any of them past 2010 let alone both of them would be severely reduced.

I'm not unsympathetic to your position

but I’m not about to start counting on these other relievers to play high-leverage roles going forward. Its entirely possible that NONE of those guys will be late-inning caliber pros. (Buckholz aguably already was but considering the nature of his injury he’s a question to me).

by Teekalong on Jan 19, 2010 11:10 AM MST up reply actions

agreed

I understand the fungibility of relievers, in the sense that a drop off from Street to say Matt Daley would be noticeable, but not season-crushing, and there’s a whole lot of money saved there.

I just don’t want to deal with another Shawn Chacon/Bad Fuentes season. Street’s just about the best we’ve had at the back end.

Here’s to hoping he’s healthy.

I disagree with your stance on the importance of closers..

a good closer makes the game shorter, causing batters to press earlier in the game. When a batter is pressing, he becomes less productive. So the closer doesn’t just affect the 9th inning, he affects innings 6-9.

I never said a closer is useless, or that having somebody with bite to nail down the game isn't useful.

I simply believe that the STATUS of the closer in regards to their importance of the game as perceived by most people (especially the existence of the Saves stat) is generally over-glorified.

by Greg Stanwood on Jan 20, 2010 1:03 AM MST up reply actions

I'm kind if in the middle on this one

I think closers are extremly overrated during the regular season but I also think that having a good closer is a necessity in the postseaon. Just look at every postseason series last season. The team that lost had their closer blow at least one game in all seven of them. (Lidge in World Series game 4 did not count as a blown save but he clearly lost the game with that performance) The idea of closers getting paid so much seems so wasteful to me during the regular season. It’s like “oh good job. You got the last three outs with a multirun lead with the Reds 6-7-8 coming up. You deserve all kinds of credit for closing down a game we were probably going to win 95% of the time anyway.” But once you’re in the postseason with a slim lead in the 9th inning, you start to think that there’s nobody more valuable then your closer. I’m torn here.

Not really, if you use traditional political spectra.

Libertarianism doesn’t exist on the left/right scale as such, hence, why there are such things as both left libertarians and right libertarians. I identify as a centrist libertarian, as on the left/right scale, my views are centrist. It is only on the authoritarian/libertarian scale that I lean towards a side.

As for Street, i think it’s suprising to me he signed. I envisioned him testing the market next year but I’m happy to see he’s commited. All I can do now is hope he continues to produce and stray away from declining.

Yeah, I can't really call them bad deals

Betancourt’s deal I’m fine with, pretty decent actually.

I just get uneasy with giving a closer a multi year deal like this. Plus side is that Street is still very young for a proven closer, so I wouldn’t expect major drop offs. I do prefer Street closing the next few years to anyone currently in the organization. Time will tell on the deal.

is that DOD is going for the window we have currently open. The Dodgers are going to have their struggles, the Padres are weak, the Giants impotent, Dbacks inconsistent…

It appears he has received permission to open the pocketbook for the next couple of years and maintain a highly competitive team while the young players are hitting their prime.

That’s my read on the situation at least. Prepare to root for a mid-market team (from a budget standpoint)

I agree that the stars have aligned somewhat for the organization and the team can be competitive over the next few years. There’s no time like the present.

by phishbate on Jan 19, 2010 10:48 AM MST up reply actions

But here's the key; and it could be very good news for Rockies fans

If the Rockies popularity can skyrocket during this window of opportunity and the team can make a few playoff runs, there is an outside chance that the window might not close for a long, long time. Suppose Denver falls in love with this team and attendance makes a run at where it was in the 90’s (I know it won’t get THAT high but it should at least head in that diraction). We already have a young franchise player in Tulo and a young franchise pitcher in Ubaldo. If the organization makes more money due to increased popularity both of those players could spend their entire careers in Rockies uniforms. If that is the caase the Rockies will have the hard part of the equation figured out for the next 10-12 years. The Two hardest things to find when building a baseball team are the franchise player and the ACE pitcher and the Rockies already have both.

Denver is not Philly, I’d be shocked to see the rox near that popularity level. I agree with the general thought, especially since the team can be a regional draw. A few years of winning can do wonders for a fan base.

the point is that if the Phillies aren't the first team, suchas in Boston or NY

Denver is the most under-rated Sports town in the country

People spend too much time obesessing with teams they know (Cowboys, Lakers, Bulls, Cubs, Stars, etc…) then educating themselves they don’t know yet and never will because they’re not from the market they tunnel-vision on.

Living in the same neighborhood as Utah and Nebraska only hurts our case. It was like that Robin Williams stand up that was brought up some weeks ago; “Canada is like an apartment above a really great party” Now use that here and you see what’s going on with Colorado and it’s surrounding states.

I thought it was Sporting News

and yeah i do remember something of that nature, I think with SN they won it back to back years (around the super bowls i believe) but as of the last few years i remember they were in the low-teens, behind places like Phoenix (with except the Suns or their WNBA team (only because we don’t have one) maybe, there is no way they draw more of a crowd for any sport then Denver does with football, baseball or hockey).

Honestly, if you don’t mention either altitutde or John Elway, most “mainstream (most ESPN viewers)” sports fans won’t know what you’re going at.

I think one thing that hurts Denver

in the national media is that the city has a shorter sports history than some of the big market teams (other than the Broncos). I can tell you that people around here know a little about the Broncos but know next to nothing about the other three teams (Rockies, Nuggets, and Avalance).

Broncos are always #1

and then #2 is whatever the most successful team in the state is. Right now i would say aside from the trainwreck that is the Broncos, the Nuggets are the most hyped. In the early 00’s and late 90’s I would definetly say the Avs were there and in the mid 90’s it was the Rockies.

So very true

My theory is that it takes roughly 25-30 years to establish a sports “tradition” in a city. Both the Avs and Rox are past the midpoint, and have a good foundation to build on (2 cups and a WS appearance), and at this point they just need to field competitive teams to solidify their place.

Once you can get to the point where people like us will be able to tell our kids “I remember back in 07 when Holliday slid into home launching us into the playoffs”, that’s when the tradition is set :-)

Caution: Colorado teams are better than they appear.

The Phils own Philly right now because they have a potential Juggernaut of a team AND a new stadium. The Eagles owned them for the first half of the decade because of their success.

These come in waves, and the recent Broncos history is loosening their reins on the town. There is still a long way to go before this is a Rockies town, though…

I'm sure the economy has something to do with it but I've always wondered about

the AVS ticket pricing model. I realize that the lions share of their revenue comes from ticket sales but seems they could improve revenue by having a lower price point.

recently they have started a $20 ticket night promotion

you can buy tickets at the Pepsi Center for $20. All of those games have completely sold out.

Hockey is different in that they don’t have a lucrative TV contract and the majority of their income is based on ticket sales, thus the higher prices.

I know I can’t afford to go to Avs games unless I purchase a discounted ticket package, and I think the Front Office is finding that out as well

If we consider the market size of the Broncos

who in the top ten in the NFL it’s easy to start to believe that the Rockies can come near that. We’re still a relatively young franchise who has never won a championship or even put together multiple winning seasons. It could happen.

by BringItHome on Jan 19, 2010 11:19 AM MST up reply actions

Rox could definitely draw that many fans

When they first moved to Denver, the Rox set all sorts of attendance records (albeit with the benefit of 75,000 seat Mile High) and when they built Coors, they added the entire upper right field section to the blueprints because of the demand they faced.

And then we hit the bad times in the early 2000s, and attendance slipped. But as RMN said, Colorado supports its winning teams. If the Rox can compete from the beginning of this season, I bet we’d be well on our way to selling out Coors consistently again.

Caution: Colorado teams are better than they appear.

Some of my favorite non-post season games

have been evening games during poor seasons. Especially with visting family/friends because you’re able to get some very very nice seats late in the game as it clears out. It’s kind of a cool atmosphere.

For the sake of the Rockies I hope they keep packing the seats while avoiding a Cubs/Red Sox horrible party atmosphere.

And remember

Even though the Rockies have had two playoff runs in the last three years, both attendance figures were killed early in the season by low expectations coupled with VERY slow starts by the team. The 2.65 million or so that the Rox drew last season is not an accurate reprisentation of how much fans will support this team if it wins. If the Rockies play well all year this season I think 3 million is a possibility for attendance.

This was the basis of my conversation with Dick Monfort about 5 years ago

He had this view that the Denver market was small and would never compete. I told him…“look at the Broncos”.

The Broncos have fanatical fans in Wyoming, Western Kansas, Western Nebraska, Utah, Arizona (I think there’s more Broncos fans in AZ than Cards fans) New Mexico and Nevada. Almost the entire Rocky Mountain region has some element of Broncos fandom.

Given time, the Rox will be able to reach these fans. Consistent winning breeds consistent and wider fan base.

The Rockies have gained A LOT of ground in the national media.

ESPN is not nearly as ignorant as they once were. Living outside of Colorado (and not having had Extra Innings of the MLB Network) ESPN has been the only place I could find highlights, and for years chances of even reporting the score were slim, unless they happened to be playing against a contender in an important game. But in the last 2-3 years, that has improved drastically. Granted, winning helps, but it also helps having players like Tulo and Ubaldo. We’re not just Todd Helton anymore.

It's interesting

Many of the new stadiums are actually being built with fewer seats. (Yankee Stadium being the exception) The Twins Target field which opens this year only holds 40,000, the Mets new park only holds 41,800, and the Marlins new park opening in 2012 (which looks pretty awesome actually) will only seat 37,000.

Teams are starting to value quality over quantity when it comes to seats in these new parks.

The other hurdle

Is maintaining a good farm system so that when your franchise pitcher and franchise player start to get unproductive, you have young players to replace them. That’s tough to do consistently over the years with low draft picks and not trading valuable veterans for blue-chip prospects.

by controlled_slide on Jan 19, 2010 11:10 AM MST up reply actions

Great Point

There is potential for a large market here and it is growing with the last two post season appearances. If DOD can put together a winning atmosphere around here our budget can continue to expand so we won’t be on the low-mid market limit so much anymore.

Great Take

Unfortunatly we do live in the Boras era, so the system we live in with agents and players makes it virtually impossible to keep a player on one team from the start of his career through his peak years. Colorado has certainly made a good case though for being an organization with direction and a bright future that makes it more appealing to stick around.

Seven?

- Michael McKenry
- Franklin Morales
- Chris Nelson
- Juan Nicasio
- Greg Reynolds
- Chaz Roe
- Esmil Rogers

Every player on the 40-man roster makes at least $400,000, even when on optional assignment in the minors. Only minor leaguers without major league contracts don’t get figured in there.

Betancourt is a steal at 2yr/$7.4M

Street at 3yr/$22.5M isn’t bad either. I seriously doubt he is around all three years, but at least we have him signed at below market value for an elite closer.

I really like this deal

I know there are concerns about the $$ going to street but he was lights out most of the year. If he can do that again this and even improve, remember he’s only 26, he will be worth every penny. The Betty deal is outstanding!! This may be the best set up and close combo we’ve ever had. Combine with a rotation that can go deep into games and we are looking very good!

by BringItHome on Jan 19, 2010 11:15 AM MST reply actions

I love both deals.

We got RafBet cheap and Street signed without going into arbitration. Good job DOD.

Remember old folks, I'm just 18 years old =]

by CentralCaliRox on Jan 19, 2010 11:30 AM MST reply actions

Street got almost exactly what Valverde got

from the Tigers ($7.5 mil per year), but with an extra year. (I wonder if there’s either some back-loading in the deal or there’s a buyout option. 3 years is long for a reliever.)

I think that’s reasonable. I’d rather have Street than Valverde, so I think the team is paying at or below market.

I was suprised, and pleased, by the Betancourt signing, too. Neither Buchholz or
Corpas are sure things to come back at this point, so locking up a proven 8th-inning
guy is a good step.

Congrats to the Rockies’ front office for both signings. They’re shoing some real commitment to puttting a championship-contending team on the field. Now I hope the fans respond with increased attendance this year,

I don’t live in Colo. yet, but plan to be there part of the summer & will try to take in a couple of Rockies games while I’m there.

Carroll went 27-21 in New England with a division title and two playoff appearances. Maybe in New England that’s a ‘disaster’, but in Seattle that’s a ‘contract extension’.

I think he’ll find some sort of happy medium and the Carroll Era will peak with a division title or three, maybe a deep playoff run, but I’m not sold that the Super Bowl is within reach in five seasons. Then again, it’s the NFL, so who knows.

Can't recall all but...

How many college coaches went on to be really successful in the NFL? Jimmy Johson comes to mind, but the Miami teams he coached were more like an XFL team than anything else. But the failures like Spurrier and Saban are what stick out. I guess I don’t remember Carroll doing as well as 27-21, but it was a while ago.

"I clearly miscalculated how popular it would be to show Calvin urinating on a Ford logo"--Bill Watterson

by frightened inmate #2 on Jan 19, 2010 2:33 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah but it's about the direction he took the franchise in New England

He took over a team that was in the Superbowl the year before he got there. The Patriots got worse every year he was the coach and were never prepared for a big game. The team also had a tendancy to get worse as each season wore on. (In 1999 for instance they started 6-2 and ended up 8-8)

HAHAHAHA. That still amuses me.

by jrockies on Jan 19, 2010 2:36 PM MST up reply actions

Counterpoint: Carroll’s last Pats team had a really young defense, Bledsoe, and that was about it. Besides, they were probably lucky to have even gotten to 6-2 – they were beating some pretty craptastic teams, and not by all that much. That same collection of guys went 5-11 in Belichick’s first year before the defense entered it’s prime, Brady happened, and the dynasty began. So I don’t think the decline of the Parcells-era Pats can be considered entirely Carroll’s fault.

by Franchise26 on Jan 19, 2010 2:48 PM MST up reply actions

Disagree

A lot of the guys on the Parcells Superbowl defense were there through the Carroll era and helped win the first Superbowl under Bellichick. (Ty Law, Lawyer Milloy, Ted Johnson, Otis Smith, Tedy Bruschi were all there through the whole trasition period) It think Carroll lost that team during his time in New England.

Both of these deals were definitely earned by both of the relievers. Street was pretty much perfect through the whole season and Rafael came in and was lights out in the 8th inning. I’m very satisfied with how our pen is going to look in 2010 and for years to come.

Renck has a full article on today's deals.

This Tulo perspective is from Renck again. He must call Tulo every single day before he writes his articles. It’s so funny to read. It’s not just the contract the Rockies offered that matters; it’s what Tulo thinks of it. :-)

On December 13, 2007, Lo Duca was named in the Mitchell Report in his connection with human growth hormone (HGH). Lo Duca allegedly received the HGH from former clubhouse attendant and known steroids dealer Kirk Radomski, who produced to Mitchell three checks from Lo Duca in the amount of $3200. Federal investigators also seized handwritten notes from Lo Duca to Radomski during a search of Radomski’s house. The report also claims that Lo Duca introduced several other baseball players to Radomski, including Adam Riggs, Kevin Brown, Eric Gagné, and Matt Herges.

Has anyone posted the THT article comparing Pavano and Street?

http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/blog_article/huston-street-or-carl-pavano/
I have to admit that I think for 2010 Pavano is a better deal. I could be wrong and definitely was last year, but I watched Street play in Oakland and I am still afraid he is going to be a bust.

"I never threw an illegal pitch. The trouble is, once in a while I would toss one that ain’t never been seen by this generation."

by arpagamos on Jan 19, 2010 10:28 PM MST reply actions

I disagree with Pavano being a better deal

we just signed Hammel for $1.9M this year and he will easily outperform Pavano, with less “injury” risk. I don’t see the logic in paying $7M for a #4 starter when there are other cheaper alternatives available.

Attention Whore.

by Muzia on Jan 19, 2010 10:42 PM MST up reply actions

That's not a fair comparison

Hammel is club controlled while Pavano is not, and that keeps Hammel’s actual value artificially deflated.

by Mitchell Who on Jan 19, 2010 10:45 PM MST up reply actions

but thats exactly my point

why pay that much money when there should be plenty of club controlled options that can give you 5 innings a game?

Attention Whore.

by Muzia on Jan 19, 2010 10:46 PM MST up reply actions

I take Hammel (but I know what the guy can do)

But that assumes there is a club controlled guy available. Let’s say your the Dodgers do you sign Pavano for the 7 mil knowing there is a better than even chance he makes 20ish starts on the year, or do you gut it out with the guys they have.

by Mitchell Who on Jan 19, 2010 10:51 PM MST up reply actions

I still see the Twins as a small market team, even though there are signs they are moving away from that

for a team like the Dodgers, $7M isn’t a terrible price to pay for a guy who can give you those innings, especially since there aren’t great in-house alternatives left.

Attention Whore.

by Muzia on Jan 19, 2010 10:53 PM MST up reply actions

Maybe?

But the Twins are in a pretty terrible division which makes the value that Pavano does give them all the more important, and I’m not familiar enough with their farm system to know what depths they can mine for similar numbers.

by Mitchell Who on Jan 19, 2010 10:56 PM MST up reply actions

Pavano has a really patchy history of underperforming

there are plenty of FA available that can give similar innings for less money.

Attention Whore.

by Muzia on Jan 19, 2010 10:58 PM MST up reply actions

That's Fair

I definitely see your point but 7 million to me seems like a decent deal, in the sense that both sides are happy. Granted there are a lot of ifs with Pavano, but if he can give an average performance he’ll be worth more than that.

by Mitchell Who on Jan 19, 2010 11:04 PM MST up reply actions

It's not a bad deal

Huge kudos for the Street and Betancourt signings. It’s arguable that three years for a closer is a mistake, but it sends a hell of a message to the fanbase, and really, we have more than the core of the best Rockies team ever in place for the next two seasons (and much of it for longer). This is a win all the way around.

And a huge thanks to the Gints for signing Bengie. Now please hit him cleanup for 140 games in 2010. plz k thx.

I saw an interesting snippet about Ben Sheets on MLBN last night

The analysts were suggesting that he should land with the Cardinals because of their pitching coach. And
I thought, much to my own amazement….that he should get with Apodaca, since apparently he has fixed Street, Marquis and Hammel….so what would you all think of us attempting to go after Sheets?

Dear Rockies- What a fun ride! Best comeback in MLB history to become NL Wild Card Champs.

Troy Tulowitzki-MLB's BEST shortstop..nuff said
Yorvit Torrealba-Our clutch has gone out, along with the best name in MLB. Sad Panda :(
Brad Hawpe- UZR isn't everything!
Dexter Fowler- The Bedazzler- Blinding speed, blinding smile, leaps Utleys in a single bound.

i don't not like the idea of it

I just don’t see any way that ownership gets on board something like that, especially with the rotation the way it is.

I think once they hear the words $6.5+ million per year

they’re out. I’d love to see Sheets pitch here, but he’s too expensive and he’s big-market bait anyways, he’s either going st. louis, nym, nyy or the cubs.

If a woman has to choose between catching a fly ball and saving infant's life, she will choose to save the infant's life without even considering if there is a man on base.

You guys have probably already seen this

but here it is anyway. Evan Brunell from THT has a neat little comparison between Carl Pavano and Hous. http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/blog_article/huston-street-or-carl-pavano/
