(OT) The super Superbowl thread
I thought it might be fun to start up a thread for discussing the superbowl (and probowl) so it doesn't clutter the rest of the site. We can use this tread to make predictions, discuss players, and maybe even turn it into a grame thread. At least it will be something to do while we wait for spring. So, who do you want to win?
Personally, I've got to root for the Saints. Either way, it should end up being quite a game.

I really want the Saints to win but I give them almost no shot
I’m going with my “no expectations, no disappointment” theory here.

I'm actually pretty okay with either team.
I’d probably lean toward the Saints, but I also have to root for my fellow Cougar (Collie) so I at least want him to have a great game either way. And I just can’t help but like Payton Manning. And I also like Drew Brees. So really, I guess I’m just rooting for a good game.
What would you have done if Naufahu Tahi and the Vikings made it in?

I didn't even know Tahi was a Cougar until a couple days ago.
He’s not nearly as high profile as Collie. But I think my hatred for Favre would have overridden all.
He ran all over my Rams a few years ago, so i remember him well

I’m ok with either team winning but I’ll probably personally be rooting for the Colts.

I usually root for the team who is currently in possession of the ball.
It’s a good method.

I'd like to see the Saints win
Since it’ll be their first. Also saw an interesting stat, where if the Colts win, the last 10 Super Bowls would have been won by 5 different teams. Rather see someone new hoist it!
But that said, my logic says the Colts will win :-/
Hopefully its a good game and good commercials, that’s all that really matters!
Caution: Colorado teams are better than they appear.
Only 5 champions in the last decade!
How can that be? The NFL has a salary cap, and parity, and stuff!!

I want the Saints to win,
but I think it will be tough for a team that played 4 out of 16 games on grass and won only one significant game of those 4 on grass (Miami, their win against Tampa doesn’t count).
I have always liked the Colts, especially Peyton Manning. He reminds me a lot of Todd Helton (go figure). So I’m not rooting against them.
I really don’t care though either way because I won’t be annoyed by either of these teams fans when they win and tear their cities to the ground. Both have pretty loyal fan bases and have been through a lot, a lot like Rockies’ fans. It should be a very entertaining and interesting game.

Oh crap, I’ve made a horrible mistake. I bought tickets online to a Rockies-Raiders game. Did I get ripped off?
It's the offseason.
We’re a community that like interacting with each other, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a Super Bowl thread. We’ve also had plenty of other non-baseball threads.
Which is a good idea, it's a great site...
but there is something to be said for chatting about football with baseball fans. :)

I can respect him
and his incredible talent but I don’t like him at all. It’s mostly for irrational reasons and I probably shouldn’t get into it. I do enjoy watching him on the field and he’s one hell of a QB.
Something I thought of
If there was no Peyton Manning, or if Manning wasn’t as good as he is, then maybe Todd Helton would have started at Tennessee, and might have focused more on football than baseball. So Peyton Manning: greatest football player in Rockies history.
by controlled_slide on Feb 4, 2010 11:28 AM MST up reply actions
I have wondered this as well
I certainly wasn’t paying close attention to Tennessee football when I was 10, but I think Helton probably wouldn’t have been good enough to make the NFL. So it may not have mattered, but who knows

It is entirely possible
The injury did happen a few games into his junior year, so he would have had about 16 games to shape him. Well…that’s probably enough.

was Helton got injured. Manning was 3rd string at the time and Helton was 2. I don’t remember where I read this.

That isn't always the case for everyone.
When the Yanks beat the Phills, I was glad cause the NLDS was soclose, and that would’ve meant we hypothetically could’ve won the Series- and that would’ve made me bitter.
So, I was all, “Well, we wouldn’t have won anyway. Oh well.”

by prettyinpurple on Feb 4, 2010 4:56 PM MST up reply actions
I can see that but I'm the complete opposite
I like to think that we were that close even if it raises more “what might have been” questions. I wanted the Phillies to win because I was already so bitter that them winning wouldn’t have changed anything (That and because I hate the Yankees).
And even though the Phils lost I still think we COULD (not would) have beat the Yankees because I think we matched up well agianst them.

The way I see it
Is that the Saints don’t even deserve to be there. Outside of a couple of fluke/bonehead plays, the Vikings were clearly the better team in the NFC Championship game. New Orleans shouldn’t be there, so they definitely shouldn’t win.
GO COLTS!
The Colorado Rockies aren't a team, they're an armada.
They might not deserve to be there, but Minnesota deserves to be there less
There’s a lot of teams that “didn’t deserve to be in the Super Bowl” that won.

the TV ad was such a non issue
It was short, quick, and really…well, a non issue. I didn’t even realize what was happening until the end, and since it only aired once I had to go back and watch it online, leaving me with the distinct feeling of, THAT was the big deal?!
"And I'm sick of all my judges/They're so scared of letting me shine/but I know that I can take it/So long as somebody takes me home every now and then" -- The Killers
I think the principle itself of politicizing super bowl commercials is a problem.
And the network having the power to filter what ads are chosen so they create their own political message, yes, I do have a problem with that.
I did not have a problem with the ad itself, however.
"And I'm sick of all my judges/They're so scared of letting me shine/but I know that I can take it/So long as somebody takes me home every now and then" -- The Killers
Agree with Squeaky. Not sure Hawperox's comment follows
How would you feel about a pro-abortion message? Or a “join the Klan” ad? Or 30 seconds of Osama Bin Laden pointing at the screen and laughing?
The ad itself is cunningly and cleverly done. I almost said “affectionately” but I don’t think something with that much dissembling involved can be affectionate.
