Friday Rockpile: Jason Giambi open to returning to Rockies; KOA hires Jerry Schemmel as new voice of Rockies radio

Giambi open to returning to Rockies - The Denver Post
Two thousand and nine Rockies Jason Giambi is one of several players the team has expressed interest in, as well as a few relievers for bullpen depth. The comment to the article makes everything sound so simple: "Trade Hawpe for PITCHING [and] keep Giambi [...]"

Rockies find new voice in Schemmel - The Denver Post
Jerry Schemmel will join Jack Corrigan in the booth to broadcast Rockies games on KOA. I don't know the Denver radio scene, but good things have been said about him on this site.

Pawtucket Times - Iannetta, Bailey, Rhault eye upcoming baseball season

"If I play to my potential, there won’t be any platooning. If I struggle, there will be. It just depends," Iannetta told Blackstone Valley Sports. "Hopefully with this contract it will allow me to play 130 games and just go out and see what happens."

Iannetta's stoking the flames for a 2010 Catcher Debate War.

Don’t you forget about me :: The Hardball Times
Craig Brown at The Hardball Times takes a "big picture look at the lower end of baseball’s current financial structure—the middle to lower class, if you will." For the Rockies, Brown concludes that the Rockies are in a good position after having made no significant moves during the offseason.

Twitter / Jerry Crasnick: Scott Podsednik has reache ...
Jerry Crasnick reports that Scott Podsednik has reportedly reached an agreement with the Kansas City Royals. Dayton Moore is putting the Royals over the top in 2010. World Series victory--naaaahhh.

Schemmel is my favorite broadcaster of any sport, period

I agree with him that it will be interesting to see how he adjusts to a slower paced game and sharing the booth. I’m officially going to pause my TV on Opening Day until it aligns the game with my radio.

I guess I"m one of the few who actually have heard him broadcast baseball

Though I didn’t realize it till I read the article. I never connected the Jerry Schemmel that did Billings Mustangs games with the one that did Nuggets games.

Schemmel was interviewed on KOA this morning

he commented that he was a long shot for the job, but somehow “the pieces fell into place”

I personally can’t wait to hear him.

his words, not mine

my guess would be what you had mentioned, about baseball broadcasting being a completely different beast than any other sport. Instead of describing the action, you have to paint the picture between pitches.

I know this was probably discussed but I might have missed it.

but CHONE projects Toddfather to drop 40 in BA? .325 to .283. That makes no sense to me. He’ll be even more effective having a full season to recover from his back surgery and likely more rest with Hawpe at first..

Can some stathead help me?

Projections don't incorporate such rationale

They usually use the last 2-3 seasons as a baseline and adjust for age. With Todd being 37 and being just a season removed from a .264 season, I’m not shocked at that projection.

"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein

by Andrew T. Fisher on Jan 8, 2010 9:14 AM MST up reply actions

This may sound stupid

but these projections are kind of predictable. It just seems to be an average of the player’s last few seasons and then takes a few other things like age and injury and adds them to the equation. Unfortunately it really can’t predict a breakout season (or a disastrous season) and that’s what can really make a difference. (I don’t dislike like CHONE as much as I think that you just can’t predict baseball. You can get a good estimate but I really can’t put to much stock into them)

Naturally

But how much wrath would it get if it had actually predicted Martin Prado to hit more HR than David Wright in 09? They have to be conservative, and you just have to keep that in mind

"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein

by Andrew T. Fisher on Jan 8, 2010 9:26 AM MST up reply actions

Is there a place where they predict something like

10 breakout seasons and ten busts? I think that would be helpful. Just something where they go out on the limb a little more often.

"They fired me for being too old. I'll never make the mistake of turning seventy again." -- Casey Stengel after being let go by the Yankees

by RhodeIslandRoxfan on Jan 8, 2010 9:31 AM MST up reply actions

And it seems to me going out on said limb

involves a little more than last couple of seasons numbers…and perhaps understanding the player a bit more.

I mean really , a lifetime .320ish hitter with one season of less than .300 because of injury drops 40 points…

this really bugs me..lol

Schoenweis is the only RP worth pursuing in that group

Maybe Guillermo Mota could be alright and seriously what can Brendan Donnelly do at this point? But FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DON’T SIGN KEVIN GREGG!!! Even Jorge Freakin Julio thinks it’s a bad idea to have Gregg be a RP for the Rockies

yeah but maybe that's the reason why i'd like to give him a chance

i think it would come down to either the mound is his escape from his problems or he can’t escape his problems when he gets to the mound. The fact he came back last season makes me think it could work out but tell me that’s not a rough place for someone to be. So going to a good team that can use solid LH innings could be a great success story for him and the Rockies.

Although I am new at posting here, I have been an avid reader since last spring training. Has he not heard of the Great Catcher Wars of 2009? The Row dosn’t need any encouragement, he needs to refuse any and all interviews untill he has captured the starting catcher spot in spring training and demonstrated the HE is en fuego or has en fuegoness or whatever. Whats next, is he going to do an interview and praise/complain about Barmes? I personally like the guy but he’s got to keep himself out of the news for our sakes!!!

The exit numbers don’t align with the mile markers, and as you might expect they have had to add some since the interstate was built 50 years ago. So the exit numbers go 1,2,3,3A,3B,4,5A,5B,6. Exit 6 should be like Exit 17 or something.

Of the first six exits in RI, and by six I mean nine (see above) seven have have a Dunkin’ Donuts within five minutes of the exit. Even more amazing though is that all of them, and I mean all of them are packed. And I don’t mean “oh it’s crowded here” packed; I’m talking about lines coming out of the door each morning packed. They have pretty much run Starbucks out of business in this state.

/Sigh

I just don’t get the hole “must have Dunkin’ Donuts coffee in the morning to function” thing.

I seem to recall

That after 2007, when he got sent down, came back up, and was tearing the cover off the ball when he played the rest of the year, he said something similar. Which I would kind of prefer that he doesn’t need to give himself a boot in the arse every 2 years, but if we got more like the 2008 production than the 2009, I’d take it.

Keep the DH in the AL

Leave it as it is, everyone talks about the DH taking away from the purity of the game. Or they support the DH because they get their jollies from more runs (Giambi’s right, chicks DO dig the long ball) but my whole life the DH has been in affect and it has formed my view of baseball to this day. Say goodbye to the Jamey Carrolls, Craig Counsells and Omar Quintanillas of the world because if there is a full time DH those type players will be completly weeded out of ML rosters with in 5 years and without any DH at all in baseball what would the careers of Giambi, Thome, Cust and etc. look like if they were all basically playing to the same schedule Giambi was with the Rockies for their whole careers? If the DH is fully instituted/abolished there will be no reason for inter-league play and a lot will be taken away from the World Series.

Having to see NL players, typically 4th outfielders, being placed in a somewhat unfamiliar position in the biggest games of the year and watching AL managers have to adjust their lineups and basically their entire gameplan for NL parks sets the stage for some of those great dramatic underdog-comes-through moments or huge decision that backfire on a team and turn momentum for the remainder of the series. Too much attention is emphasized on installing a uniform system for “competitive equity” rather then considering the consequences of taking away so many careers and also killing the imbalance between the leagues that creates such intrigue when it comes to seeing one league’s team trying to compete with an oppossing team playing by their league’s rules.

If a woman has to choose between catching a fly ball and saving infant's life, she will choose to save the infant's life without even considering if there is a man on base.

I think

it would be nice to have Giambi back if he can’t find a DH spot. It would almost be the same as the Phillies having Matt Stairs on their roster (except he might still be able to play a little outfield).

by jrockies on Jan 8, 2010 10:21 AM MST up reply actions

i would love to see giambi back as a pure pinch hitter

it gives us a certain amount of swagger in that role. Offensively, I think it helps cover for a slumping _fill in the blank(ianetta, barmes, stewart, etc) all who have capable defensive backups that have questionable offensive skills. it makes other managers have to think harder and might get us to bullpens earlier(which we traditionally seem to own). as far as having a backup right handed hitter, isn’t that Hawpes roll now that we have a smith, cargo, fowler outfield option(hawpe can play rf and the infield corners)

by Muzia on Jan 8, 2010 11:15 AM MST up reply actions

We would have no RH bench bats other than Spilborghs, that's why

And Giambi would have practically no usefulness other than being a pinch hitter. Also, just because our 25th man was useless doesn’t mean we have to resign to having a useless player defensively there this season

by Andrew T. Fisher on Jan 8, 2010 11:19 AM MST up reply actions

I agree we shouldn't resign ourselves to it

so you don’t see EY2 making the roster? If Hawpe is starting, we would have EY2 and Dex switch hitting available off the bench and Spilly and Giambi available as right handed hitters

Spilly and Giambi available as right handed hitters

Whatchu talkin bout Willis? Giambi only bats RH in the on deck circle.

I can see EY2 on the roster, and I get that he and Dex are switch hitters. It just seems to me that it would be a better use of the roster spot to fill two needs (corner IF defense and RH bat) than bring back a glorified pinch-hitter, especially if Smith is on the bench most days

Giambi only makes sense if...

EYJr. is the starting second bagger and Barmes serves as backup infielder for all except Helton, where Hawpe and Giambi can spell him. This might still be possible with EYJr in the backup spot because I’m not sure if he has the ability to play third base (play it well, I mean, but Giambi can’t really play first, either).

by Mitchell Who on Jan 9, 2010 8:49 AM MST up reply actions

although i see your point

the ball dosn’t care if it hit by a lefty or a righty. i am slightly concerned about the fewer right handed options, but believe that giambi could easily have a vaner wal type of season for us. my thought is to keep giambi till mid season as hitting insurance and either use him as trade bait if his hitting stays hot, or replacing a slumping fill in the blank with a righty when we know who it is(the slumper). all I am saying is that we have a number of players that neeed to have better seasons at the plate, some will some won’t but I think giambi provides good insurance at the plate, not just defensively like some of our other backups potentially might(although even with that it is a guessing game. I just think he is a more known quantity

Half of this game is 90% mental.

by christianrockie on Jan 8, 2010 11:34 AM MST up reply actions

but so is Fernando Tatis, and he is RH and can play all four corner positions. Giambi can play half of one.

17 years after he retired. However there are no stats listed for him during this time period at Baseball Reference. Wagner is one of the greatest shortstops of all time.

Frank Chance led his team to World Series titles while also being one of the best players on the team. This gives him the edge in my book.

It's kind of all over the places in little pieces

I can tell you that I think it makes sense to trade him and would like to do it if we got a good amount in return. My question right now is whether or not a good enough offer is out there with so many decent outfielders available this offseason.

I also don’t think Hawpe’s season ending numbers will drop off in 2010 just because he was so bad in the second half of 2009.

Schemmel

For those who’ve never heard him, Schemmel is the voice of the Nuggets and also took over calling Colorado State sports this season. He’s low-key, has a dry wit and is not at all “announcery”. A very comfortable style you can listen to for a long time without him wearing on you.

One thing I always liked about him is that he modulates his performance with the flow of the game. When things aren’t going well for the home team, he doesn’t try to gloss over it. When things do go well, he generates some legit excitement.

And, of course, there’s this: http://www.roundballminingcompany.com/jerry_schemmel/

The Rox couldn’t possibly have done any better with this hire. I’m pumped to listen to him.

Schem is a class act all the way

It’s going to be weird not hearing him call Nuggets games…but our Rox are getting a great guy and as you can see, a legit hero as well.

Duct Tape

Here is an idea. You keep Giambi as a PH and occational 1st basemen. Then you re-sign Christian Colonel (he is a free agent right now I believe). Last year in Spring Training Clint Hurdle called Christian Colonel duct tape because he could play anywhere. I think you could realistically count on him to backup up 3rd (there is not other 3rd base backup right now) and 1st. In fact I think I remember hearing he has even done some catching somewhere along the line. If so that would open the possiblity of letting Olivo swing for the fences if the situation dictates. It would also give you another right handed bat. Then let Chris Nelson, E. Young Jr, Omar Quintanilla and anyone else they want to bring in fight it out for a middle infielders backup job. (the winner = x below)

1st Helton, Colonel, Giambi
2nd Barmes, x
SS Tulo, x
3rd Stewart, Colonel
LF S. Smith
CF Fowler
RF Cargo

So swinging off the bench you have L. Hawpe (I am saying he is a backup if not you put S. Smith here.), R. Spillbourghs, R. Giambi, R. Colonel, R. Olivo (If I am right about Colonel being able to catch in a pinch) and the X player. Pretty light on speed (depending on who the X player is) but you would already have Fowler and CarGo in the game. Now that I type all this up I am not that thrilled with the depth.

What if the hokey pokey is what it is all about after all????

Hawpe at First??

I know it’s his original position and all but am I the only one not looking forward to seeing Hawpe at first base?? Don’t get me wrong I want him in the line up and I want Helton to get the rest but the guy can barely handle pop ups how is he gonna dig Tulo’s throws out of the dirt and rob doubles down the line the Helton does. If we have Giambi as a back up I think we need to consider trading Hawpe for a power righty that can play the corners and/or the outfield. I do like Hawpe we just don’t have much more room for left handed outfielders and sub par first basemen.

Alright, I'll try and get us into some quasi-baseball related talk

I’m very excited about Schemmel taking Kingery’s place in the broadcast booth, but what does everyone think about some type of something at Coors Field for Jeff? Maybe a baseball with a JK in it right near the broadcast booth? I mean, the man sat in the chair and called every Rockies game ever (sick days and time-out days aside). Or do you think the incident/issue from last year will have lasting effects and they’ll just let Jeff quietly retire?

Yes, Yes, and Soon

I’m working on the 2009 Uniform Summary as we speak (like, I literally hopped over here to take a break from it), it should be done worst case scenario by the end of the month. It’s taking a little longer this time around because I’m making it all pretty-like – I got featured on UniWatch last year for it and it was a bunch of ugly Excel spreadsheets, so on the off-chance that happens again I want to make a better impression :) .

And I don’t have anything specific in mind for a wallpaper before a Spring Training schedule wallpaper unless I get a request for one – and if you have an idea I’m always open :) .

Teams are starting to release their NRI lists.

Other than Phillips and Rincon, no others have been confirmed for the Rockies yet. In terms of in-house players, Quintanialla and Herrera will probably be there to start, maybe Matt Miller and Alan Johnson. Then, of course, a set of younger prospects looking to get into some action with the MLB guys.

I still remember Helton's blast last year in his first ST at-bat..

But anyways, hopefully one of our NRI shows ability in ST

by CentralCaliRox on Jan 8, 2010 4:14 PM MST up reply actions

I don't necessarily expect us to go that far down to the wire with a potential NRI invitee.

I think for our final bench spot, we’ll sign a Tatis/Mora type and go with that. I only expect any NRIs to make the team should there be an injury or seriously bad performance.

by Greg Stanwood on Jan 8, 2010 4:17 PM MST up reply actions

For example if Barmes drops off the table in ST and Herrera gets white hot and hits like .400

Would that affect who starts at 2nd at the beginning of the year? I don’t think so..I think we have our starters set in stone and our backups all but.

well, sort of

over the course of the season, he did what he does. Simply regressing to the mean would mean that 2nd half he hit .285 and OPS’d .890, at least in my interpretation.

You could also take it as you phrased it however and look at his whole season and say “yeah brad hawpe regressed to his career line by the end of the season”

What's what hawpe actually did called?

(I mean hitting below your career average to regress to your career average)

Again, regressing to the mean

It’s probably more proper to say that’s what Hawpe did by batting so poorly that he resembled his career average by season’s end.

So regressing to the mean has multiple definitions?

"The Dodgers are such a .500 team that if there was a way to split a three-game series, they'd find it." Vin Scully: On-Air Radio Broadcast (1990)

by RhodeIslandRoxfan on Jan 10, 2010 12:01 AM MST up reply actions

if you'll notice I'm backpedaling a lot

but it can depends on the context. If Brad Hawpe is batting .400, I’ll say that he’s not a .400 hitter, he’ll regress. Take it to just mean that he’ll approach his career numbers by all likelihood come the end of the season. He might stay high, say, finishing the season at .300/.390/.520, or low, .265/.355/.480, but when you look at that year next to his career numbers, it’s off, but not so catastrophically off that you’d say that Hawpe’s a different hitter.

does that make any sense? Regressing to the mean basically means “He’s gonna bat his career line” as that what you expect a batter to do at any given moment, bat his career line.

Yeah it makes sense

I was just checking to see if batting your career average in the second half of the season after batting 50 points above your career average in the first half of the season had a different name/definition than if you batted 50 points below your career batting average in the second half of the season after batting 50 points above your career average in the first half to end up at your career average.

About his game? Or about the guy??

He throws a ton of INTs and he has a snotty attitude. I know I don’t know the guy personally but his image through the media and what the sports news have made of him is that he falls into the category of Elway and Manning…that is very greedy.

OK, so I was pouring beer at Coors Field one night last summer....

and some guys come up arguing about their 5 most hated teams. It was pretty entertaining—-let’s hear yours!

Ignorance of the American League is a sign of good moral character.

5. China gymnasts. Cheaters :P

4. LA Dodgers. Almost all the people that I live around like them or the Giants.. So whenever one of them beat the Rockies I hear a bunch of crap. Plus, they’re in the division and whooped our butts last year. Never liked them at all truthfully.

3. Celtics. Paul Pierce is a flat out crybaby (he went out on a WHEELCHAIR and comes back in the game jogging like nothing happened about 10 minutes later..so pathetic) and there’s just something about Boston…

2. Patriots. Tom Brady is another Boston crybaby… Oh and there’s just something about Boston…

1. Red Sox. Whooped our butts in 2007 and that fueled the hatred… And geez there’s just something about Boston… Lol.

Boston sports and their fandom has become pretty bothersome as of late

You’ll get no argument there. There’s something about winning a championship or 6 that turns loveable losers into arrogant losers.

It is getting rediculous

You should hear peoplehere talking about the Patriots this week. Stuff like “Oh they suck this year” or “It’s almost not worth watching them” and my favorite “They have no chance to win it all”

At some point you would think they would take a step back and say “wait a second. This team just won it’s sixth division title in seven seasons. Maybe I should be a little bit grateful”

In no particular order

New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, any AFC West team aside from the Broncos, and the ESPN Baseball team.

Honorable mention: The Denver East Duo team that kicked my ass in the State Forensics Championship back in 2006. They were really good but also really irritating. Kind of like the Phillies – you respect how mind-blowingly good they are, but you really wished they played in Japan or something.

were more likely to see a Sunday afternoon game during the last week of the season than a Monday night game that ended in the wee hours of the morning in August.
