2010 Player Review: Octavio Dotel, Reliever
Octavio Dotel began the season with the Pittsburgh Pirates and recorded 21 saves for them. Then on July 31 the Pirates traded Dotel to the Los Angeles Dodgers for James McDonald and Andrew Lambo. Move ahead to Sept. 18 and the Rockies are in LA. Dotel walked from the home clubhouse to the visitors' one. The Rockies gave up a player to be named later in order to acquire Dotel's services for a playoff push.
The Rockies won that night and then only once more over the rest of the season. OK, so Dotel isn't to blame for the end-of-the-season collapse. He appeared in eight games and you can see the results above. Is there much else to write about Dotel's time with the Rockies?
Buster Olney reports, to no surprise at all, that the Rockies will not pick up Dotel's $4.5 million option for 2011.
2010 Grade: D/D+. Dotel's time with the Rockies can best be summed up in his Sept. 28 appearance against the Dodgers, for which he took the loss. It was the top of the eighth and the score was knotted at 6-6. Catcher A.J. Ellis doubled off Dotel to start the inning. Ching-lung Hu pinch ran for Ellis and stole third base. Rafael Furcal tripled on a 3-1 count to score Hu. Dotel stayed in for one more batter, a Ryan Theriot single. Matt Reynolds relieved Dotel and gave up a sac fly to score the inherited Furcal.

Do Not collect 4.5 mil.
Go Directly back to the Pirates/Dodgers.
Tornadough! Tornadough! Tornadough!

Sure,
but not in his SSS with the Rockies.

true enough
I don’t grade him any higher, but I’d wager he’d do better over the course of a season.

Perhaps, but with our payroll and desire to sign JDLR (and, say, VMart)
There’s no room to offer him arb, where he’s gonna get at least $4m
So let's just win 12 more games next year, mmmkay?
Will the Giants complain about the non-humidor balls in Citizens Bank Ballpark when they lose there, too?
TWINS FOR THE WINS, I guess!
He's the singular cause for our late season collapse.

I really coveted Dotel earlier in the season and was really pissed off that he went to LA
Be careful what you wish for, I guess.
It's amazing how poorly every team he was on played while he was there

Even with high volume pillow fluffing
this article did not excite.

Octavio Dotel
is not exciting. Unless we want to start the rumor that he’s having a child with Dinger.

Octavio's a good guy
and a better-than-average reliever who could competently share
the 7th inning role with Belisle or spell Betancourt in the 8th when needed.
He’s worth about $750,000 a year. Decline the option, offer that to him,
and if he thinks it’s not enough, so long.
Mediocrity sucks
Fair enough,
although I think he’ll probably get a better offer than that elsewhere.
Just an average guy with exceptional hair. Nothing more, nothing less.

I hope the Mets or Cubs pay him $3 - 4 mil
Oh yeah, I forgot. Minaya’s gone and Hendry’s now a recognized failure.
Those options may no longer be available.
Mediocrity sucks
I know Dotel's numbers were not that bad but the Rockies went 1-13 after he appeared in a game for them
Instead of a D/D+ the two letters I would have given him are an “F” and a “U”.
