Gammons: Time to give Rockies their due | ColoradoRockies.com: News
I like Peter Gammons:
So now the Colorado Rockies go into 2010 as a team with a realistic chance at playing in October for the third time in four years. Set your DVR for the Mountain Time start and watch Tulowitzki, Jimenez, Stewart, Gonzalez, Young, et al. You will not be disappointed.
Denver writers honor top Rockies | ColoradoRockies.com: News
"The Denver chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America named Troy Tulowitzki as the Rockies' top player for 2009 and Ubaldo Jimenez as top pitcher on Thursday."
Rockies put spring focus on consistency | ColoradoRockies.com: News
This has to be the first time in years that we won't be hearing about the guys "working on the fundamentals."

Thomas Harding answers three questions and runs down what the roster will look like.
Rockies' Gonzalez ready for spotlight | ColoradoRockies.com: News
"The postseason stage suited Carlos Gonzalez just fine last year, when he went 10-for-17. If the Rockies outfielder keeps performing like that, stardom won't have to come looking for him."
Hammel feeling comfy at Coors | ColoradoRockies.com: News
Harding puts it out there that Greg Smith and Tim Redding are going to challenge Jason Hammel for a rotation spot, but comes down more on the side of injury giving those two time in the rotation. Because, you know, Hammel's a pretty good pitcher.
These Ex-Prospects Face Watershed '10 -- MLB FanHouse
Biondino linked to this one in yesterday's Rockpile. Frankie Piliere writes that Carlos Gonzalez is "on the verge of stardom" and could be "one of the the elite players in the game."
Astros offer Willy T minor-league deal | Baseball | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle
There you go. If Willy accepts it's possible we'll see him for a couple of games this year. But he still won't be able to steal first base.

PRO TIP on hospitals. If ever you need hospitalization, do whatever you can to get to Swedish Medical Center in Englewood. Seriously, best hospital in Denver. Its like a week at the 4 seasons. They call your room and ask if you want to order food at every mealtime and they call it Room Service. Best staff of physicians. Just fantastic. The COO comes around to check on patients personally. While he was there, I said well see what you can do about getting my mom’s insurance carrier to pay for the rehab at Swedish. He said, sure. And darned if he didn’t come back to my mom’s room 4 hours later with a follow-up

Yep, I believe so.

I guess they still see an injury risk.
If Timmy is still Timmy in two years they’ll have to pay a ton to cover any free agent years. I don’t think it’s really that bad. Sure Timmy deserves more considering how awesome he is but his arm is due to fall off any day now.
That seems like the most likely explanation.
Rosenthal says deal is “pending physical” I’d think the Giants doctors would already have a pretty good idea on his condition.
Ignorance of the American League is a sign of good moral character.
Look out Dodgers...Purple objects in mirror are closer than they appear.

I had the same thought about that
He’s pretty much accepting the 8 million offer that they offerered and only 13 million next year, He could have made 13 million this year and 16-17 if he won arbitration this year. Makes me think he knew his case wasn’t going to win or he really wants to assurance of a 2 year contract. Maybe because he’s even afraid of injury risk.

their Minor League pitching well is deep and includes Jhoulys Chacin, whom one GM has referred to as “this year’s Tommy Hanson.”
Well isn’t that cute…but it’s wrong!!!

Chacin >>>>>> Hanson
Ubaldomania.
by The Lodo Magic Man on Feb 12, 2010 10:02 AM MST up reply actions
It's tough also
because they’re two different types of pitchers.
Not that I think Chacin will really touch Hansen, but Chacin’s inning-eating groundball inducing ways are nothing to sneeze at.
Between AA and AAA last year he had a 54% gb rate and in A ball in 2008 he had a 62%(!) groundball rate (and this was through 180 innings)
He also has good control save for his 25 combined AAA/MLB innings where he impersonated Daniel Cabrera…
"These are thin mints. I put them in the freezer. My favorites. So good."
--Reds outfielder Adam Dunn, on the girl scout cookies he keeps in his locker
That's a hell of a bold statement at this point.
One of the two has proven they can pitch very well in the majors. Time will obviously tell but still.
I think the comment was more about Chacin being the big breakout pitcher in 2010, not necessarily comparing the two anyway.
I believe Lodo
was referring to a Spanish spelling bee competition
"These are thin mints. I put them in the freezer. My favorites. So good."
--Reds outfielder Adam Dunn, on the girl scout cookies he keeps in his locker
It was.
Hanson absolutely dominated in the minors, and was incredible in the majors last year. Chacin has a ton of potential but hasn’t exactly dominated recently.
God, I hope.
Just an average guy with exceptional hair. Nothing more, nothing less.

Maybe not useful to cry over mistakes
I get it, but lets also not underestimate the difference that mistakes of that magnitude can make, and sweeping it under the rug is no more useful. Think New Orleans would be celebrating the SB right now if Miami’s doctors had cleared their signing of Drew Brees instead of Daunte Culpepper? Extreme example, sure, but sometimes its the ultimate difference between who takes home the trophy. Almost everything has to fall into place to win it all in sports. DOD has done a lot to make up for that mistake in recent years, but its pretty inarguable that it still has ramifications on our championship goals. Fortunately, as this year’s draft seems to suggest, DOD has tried to learn from the past.
I'm trying to say that we're still beating ourselves up over what was a good decision to begin with
Longo or Reynolds would’ve been a good pick, Bill Schmidt and his team deemed Reynolds a good pick.
He was dominating AA before he got hurt. Nobody can predict that happening.
I’m saying we’re hating on the past rather than celebrating where we’ve come.

I think you're probably not wrong
in that it doesn’t “help” anything…but throughout the year we’ll be looking for reasons this team will/will not be great and or win a title. Decisions from the past, even remote ones, are, of course, part of this calculus.
And I disagree that it was a “good” decision at the time. I don’t recall a single analyst saying that Reynolds was worth a #2 pick. Most thought it was a bad move, and they seem to be right, injury or not.
But whatever, I don’t intend to dwell or start a debate, just sticking up for the position that its a valid issue to raise in terms of the overall picture of this franchise.
Frank Thomas has retired.
The big hurt will be missed.
He was a hell of a player and from everything I’ve read about him, a hell of a guy.
kudos, Big Hurt

I think we should have a Frank Thomas discussion
Hall of Famer or slam dunk Hall of Famer? I thought he was really good. Then I looked at his stats, and he’s better than I thought. He had almost 1700 walks. He was really good at getting on base, where he then clogged them up.
Here’s his Baseball Reference page to facilitate discussion.
by controlled_slide on Feb 12, 2010 12:57 PM MST up reply actions
Slam dunk, no question.
He’s without doubt one of the best hitters of all time (he’s 15th in OPS for instance). Plus, he started pushing against PED use in baseball around 1995. He deserves to be first ballot easily.
For the first seven years of his career, he was among the best ever.
The only person that seems to compare currently is Pujols, who I’ll admit is better. But Frank had 24 HR, 100 RBI, 100 BB, 100 Runs, .300 BA for the first seven years. If I recall correctly, that had never been done. Oh yeah, his lowest OBP in that period was .426.
Over the next 10 years, he only had one at his previous level (2000), but he still had some very productive seasons between injuries. His career declined as he aged, much like players in the olden days.
For what it’s worth, I plotted his WAR by season, in the same way that BtB does to look at HOF candidates. He was well above the “HOF zone” for almost his entire career.
I'm sure you've read these
But Beyond the Box Score and Rob Neyer have both written pieces about him today saying basically that.

Oh, I hadn't seen those yet.
Thanks for the heads up.
Lets not also forget
he probably has/had the best nickname in baseball
"These are thin mints. I put them in the freezer. My favorites. So good."
--Reds outfielder Adam Dunn, on the girl scout cookies he keeps in his locker
I should add
as long as he’s not linked to PED’s, 1st ballot HOF…
"These are thin mints. I put them in the freezer. My favorites. So good."

hmmm.
“Right fielder Brad Hawpe and third baseman Ian Stewart combined for 48 home runs and 156 RBIs during the regular season, but just five at-bats in the NLDS.”
This can’t be true, can it? I’m suddenly less enthused about Tracy’s judgment (sitting Hawpe was defensible, but I can’t believe he gave Atkins so many starts against Philly).
