What does your name mean?
I figured I would get one more silly off-topic FanPost going before pitchers and catchers report. The name changes on the staff in recent weeks have brought up some discussion on the choice of usernames by some Rowbots. I have wondered for some time what the origin of them are.
Some are probably pretty self-explanatory - I doubt much explanation is required for Rox Girl, holly96 and Chacinisthefuture. But how about some of those less obvious names? Biondino? Noelman? Phisbate?
As for me, my username is now my given name. As boring as it is, there's still an interesting backstory (at least to me). Most Americans with the last name "Fisher" have a lineage stemming from Britain, but there's no British blood in my veins. In actuality, my last name is 100% Czech, or at least it was. My great-grandfather came to America with the last name of Fišer. That doesn't translate to the English alphabet, so it was changed.
As for the former Poseidon's Fist, the story actually isn't that interesting. When I was the op/ed editor of my high school paper, I wrote a periodical movie review with a friend whose last name was Wacker. Each edition, we would "FishWack" a newly released film. The drama professor found our verbiage to be a bit crude and juvenile, so he recommended a strengthening of the term; hence, PF. Given that we were crude and juvenile, we stuck with our FishWacking, but PF stuck with me.
Disclaimer: of course, no one is required to reveal anything. Don't reveal something you're not comfortable with.
Eat. Drink. Be Merry. But the above FanPost does not necessarily reflect the attitudes, opinions, or views of Purple Row's staff (unless, of course, it's written by the staff [and even then, it still might not]).

I wanted to find the clip of it
But I couldn’t, so I’ll just wait for it to come up organically when we’re discussing Arrested Development sometime.

Oh, and as to my real name
It’s mostly uninteresting, except for my middle name. My great-great uncle or some such on my dad’s mom’s side was the 11th governor of South Dakota, and I got his last name as my middle name. It’s cool to me because having a last name as a middle name is unusual, plus it’s keeping a family name alive. I’m probably going to give it to a son as a middle name one day.

Cool post idea
My username is pretty self-explanatory. It’s a standard username that I use for most things so I remember it on all of them. Nelson is very much a Scandinavian name. My family originally hails from Sweden.
What makes my story a little more interesting: when my mom married my dad in the early 80’s, she swore she would never name a son Willie Nelson. I was the 4th child, and I guess they figured they were running out of names. I got tagged with the name Willie Nelson (I typically go by Will, but a lot of people call me Willie; it’s always funny when people catch on that that’s my name). Then they had 4 more kids after me.
I always tell people that I am entitled to make fun of any name that I want to. Sharing a name with a famous person, I’ve been getting flak my entire life. Everybody thinks their pretty funny and original when they say, “Sing us a song, Willie!” What nobody seems to understand is that I’ve heard that no less than a billion times in my life.
I hate the Red Wings.

Well, I'm an NCAA fencer.
I’ve been fencing since normal kids were playing T-ball. Turns out I got pretty good at it.
A few years ago, after getting addicted to one of numerous fantasy leagues, I decided to start a fantasy fencing league with various members of the NCAA fencing community. Last year was our inaugural season. I imagine no one will understand this, but if you want to see the results, here they are:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Ao-iDZU-SHpZcE1zLUNaaGU2Z0tUQ21Qam02RGk0VUE&hl=en
And if you’re interested in my own personal athlete bio, you can have that too, cause I’m such a trusting fellow. Pretty horrendous picture though.
http://www.und.com/sports/c-fenc/mtt/seroff_andrew00.html
As to why I used it when I selected my sbnation name, I’m not entirely sure. The League was probably on my mind.
I, for one, am optimistic about the future. And I'm not one to be optimistic about anything.
that's pretty cool
never met anyone involved in fencing, seems like a cool sport.
It is a lot of fun.
and could be a decent sport to watch too, if people understood it.

One day in class, one of my friends started calling me “Lieutenant” – he’s always been really weird, and that day he may well have been high or something. I thought he was just joking around, but he kept doing it day after day for some reason.
About a week later, I was signing up for a chatroom-type thing to talk to him, and needed a new online name (since my previous one I had come up with when I was 12 and was rather embarrassing). All variations of “Lt.” didn’t look good/were taken, so I had to get creative.
The Star Trek: TNG insignia for a lieutenant, two rank pips = oo. Add my initials and there you have it. oo_nrb.

A backhanded tribute to...
The Rockies’ first (and possibly worst) centerfielder.
Mine's kinda interesting, I guess.
I’m really fascinated with urban legends, myths, common misconceptions, etc., and debunking them (Snopes may well be my second favorite website of all time). One of the common misconceptions that I find the most intriguing, because it’s so false and so infuriating (to me, at least), is the idea that “there are no atheists in foxholes.” I think these people would probably beg to differ with that. (As James Morrow once said, “‘There are no atheists in foxholes’ isn’t an argument against atheism, it’s an argument against foxholes.”) So I adopted this username as a reference to my interest in widely known (mis)information and how it propagates, as well as to try and debunk that particular bit of propaganda.
As to my real name, my first name was my maternal grandmother’s maiden last name (it’s a Middle English word that refers to someone who makes or lays tiles), and my last name is a word from a long-extinct dialect of Low German meaning “one who lives near a small forest.” So…yeah.

I chose mine
solely based on my addiction to the Rockies. (Think crack head.) The Rockies are my crack, so I went with it. As for my real name, I was named after a biblical king. My maternal grandfather, God rest his soul, never called me anything but “King”.

I think I've explained this before
But when I lived in Italy in 1993-4, my best friend there was an English guy who shared my first name, Mark. To differentiate us in conversation, our friends classified us in two ways:
1) the other Mark was known as “Perfect Mark” (I’m sure you appreciate the inference here).
2) the other Mark was a Jamaican/Chinese/Spanish mix, so, as you can imagine, he had very dark hair. I had the light brown/mousy look that’s so prevalent in my country, but relatively speaking I was blond. Italian for blond is “biondo” and the affectionate diminutive thereof = biondino.
The internet arrived in my university the year I got back from Italy, so when I needed an online moniker, it was an easy choice.
As for my real surname, it's a fairly uncommon Italian name found mostly in the Veneto
Which is where my dad’s from. To the best of my knowledge we’re the only family with this name in the UK, so for obvious reasons I keep my surname away from internet chat forums :)

Hollidayrain?
Lot of history behind this one:
As some of you know, this is also the name of my electronic music project. It originated from a status I had on MSN messenger ( ‘Matt Holliday’s Reign’) back in my freshman year in high school. Eventually became Hollidaysreign, then Hollidayrain. But there’s more; back when I was 9 years old, the first song I ever made used a GM midi synth patch called “FX 1 Rain.” Then after that, my first legit trance track (I was 13 or 14) was called ‘Raintrance.’ Then, there was this that pretty much ended the discussion of me ever having another name (just listen to the first lyric, if you don’t know it already).
Even though he was traded, I think of the name as more of a Rockies symbol and a symbol to my own history as a musician than anything else, so I stuck with the name.

"I mean come on, you can’t be from Nebraska and go to school at CU, I think they take away your overalls or one of your last remaining teeth for that."
You could google my name
and instantly figure out everything I’m interested in. The name works well as no one knows what it means and I’m almost always unrecognizable

One of the things I like about being a cyclist is being 100% man while wearing “bib knicker tights” (this is probably more amusing in UK English where “knickers” and “tights” are both pretty much exclusively female apparel)
This is the kind of post I’m happy not to put my real name to.
I definitely wear spandex. In the U.S. "pedalpushers" were a type of girls casual pants. Same as "capri pants".

My brother, the cyclist.
When he told me on the phone years ago that he’d taken up bicycling, I asked if he wore one of those brightly-colored spandex outfits.
He replied, disgustedly: “No. Just because you’re on a bicycle doesn’t mean you can dress like Spider-Man and expect people not to laugh at you.”
I thought they were wise words then, I consider them so now, and I proffer them to you for whatever they’re worth.

Though when I came in this morning I had to wheel my bike through the office as I'd forgotten my D-lock.
I was in my lycra at the time, then went to get changed. As I came back to my desk in my normal clothes, the female temp opposite looked me up and down and said “I preferred the other outfit” :)
My wife thought at first that I looked ridiculous. When I told her that motorists were more likely to notice me if I wore
something garish, she quickly got on board with my garishness.

Rocktober 2007
because that is a year I’ll always remember & relieve when I watch FSN’s Rockies Special “21 Days” on DVD, I’ve been using it as my Livejournal Username and Twitter though now I’ve changed to a different name on twitter now (RockpileView), I’ll always keep using Rocktober 2007 elsewhere.
My previous username was Tulo Rox but another member signed up with a similar username and it was starting to get confusing with 2 members with similar usernames so I changed it to Rocktober 2007. As for my real name, it’s just a normal boring name, nothing intresting about it other then it being my nickname.

I'm the blogger of 'View from the Rockpile' on MLBlogs: http://rocktober-2007.mlblogs.com. And I work for the Rockies, I'm dog gone proud of it too!
Mine is pretty self explanatory...
My two favorite Rockies players, even though I really do like most everyone on the team. Also because they played next to eachother on the diamond, had a good friendship off the field etc. etc. My usernames are usually in support of players I like, especially in sports forums. And I will never back down from my favorites, even if everyone doesn’t always share my opinion on them. ;) Good thread.

My real name
My first name is pretty self-explanatory. It is a shrub (and no, I was not born on Christmas; Easter actually).
As for my last name, I think I’ve said it here before (since we have a PuRP with the same last name), Paulsen. It means son of Paul, and comes from Denmark. Slightly interestingly, my ancestors that came to the U.S. changed it from (I believe, sometimes I get it wrong) Poulsen.
Yep. My names are totally boring.
Holly's one of my favourite girl's names
I think because the first girl I ever liked was called Polly and I always associate the two :)
I get called Polly every so often.
Not only is it close to Holly, but my last name starts with a P, so people get all confused.
Seinfeld
My last name is Kramer …. hence Kosmo
When I lived in Illinois, I had “KOSMO 99” plates, since there was no extra charge. Not the case in Iowa, and I’m too cheap to pay extra for them. In any case, my wife hates Seinfeld, so she would nix the custom plates.
Reviews of some great baseball sites and other cool stuff on my web magazine @ The Casual Observer
I have two unusual middle names - one Scottish, one Italian
So my four names perfectly represent my genetic heritage – 50% Italian, 25% Scottish, 25% English (actually the latter is diluted with a bit of Irish and a tiny smidge of Australian, but not so you’d notice).
I love middle names. Any children I have will definitely have at least two. They’re too much fun to ignore.
interesting
I have no middle names, very odd coming from my catholic/hispanic background…we sure do love our long names!

That is good
People tend to look at you funny or think you made a mistake filling out forms and such…it really is a pain.

Squalene 203
My best scrabble word ever.
I was playing online, and had the upper lefthand corner. I initially put down “squall” (I had a blank), but before I clicked enter, I made an almost subconscious guess, and wrote in squalene. It turned out to actually be a word. I got both triple word score boxes and the extra fifty for using all my tiles. I bet you smart people can guess how many points it went for.
I mean, say what you like about the tenets of Rockies baseball, Dude, at least it's an ethos.
That's a good story (and impressive, my gosh!)
From wiki:
Squalene is a natural organic compound originally obtained for commercial purposes primarily from shark liver oil, though plant sources (primarily vegetable oils) are used as well, including amaranth seed, rice bran, wheat germ, and olives. All higher organisms produce squalene, including humans. Squalene has been proposed to be an important part of the Mediterranean diet as it may be a chemopreventative substance that protects people from cancer.

WolfMarauder - a very nerdly and esoteric origin
An evolution of my very first internet handle, TimberWolf365. I got the name TimberWolf from the PC game MechWarrior2. I next dipped into a Final Fantasy X phase where my handles all switched to AuronOverdrive09. The next stage, when updating, went back to mechWarrior 2, where I dropped the Timber, and added Marauder, which is another reference to that game. WolfMarauder stuck, and just never dropped. I use this title for all internet based accounts.
