Canada vs GB last night was epic..

I was watching at work and it was like a chess match between the two teams. Canada only pulled ahead after Gretzky “the Great One” entered the building. I think GB was affected by crowd noise.

Actually GB is beating USA right now 4-2.

That USA-GB match was tough

Especially in the sixth end. Having a four point swing in a two point match is debilitating, especially when it was a matter of two inches. The USA team doesn’t SUCK like some have said. They’ve been extremely close each game.

They came close 8 years ago

It’s odd, I’ve been somewhat close to the Olympics 4 times in my life: I was born in Fort Irwin CA, and thus was near when the games were in LA, lived in Seoul in ‘88, lived in CO in ’02 (which was almost 8 hours away, but still) and now I’m an hour south of Vancouver. And the only time I actually went was in Seoul, and I only have vague memories of attending fencing.

Don't forget Colorado was awarded the '76 games!

Not to get all historinerd, but the 1972 elections in Colorado were all about slaugtering republicans in the light of Watergate, and rejecting the olympics. Dick Lamm ran on an anti-olympics platform, and won his first term of office.

I suspect that the IOC has a LONG memory and won’t forgive that slight anytime soon.

Essentially we were awarded the 1976 Olympics

and voters decided against a tax increase to build proper facilities. Coloradans at the time were pretty concerned with environmental impacts and traffic congestion. They pretty much said “F U” to IOC. Whistler was also offered the games, but citizens there pulled the same move. They moved the Olympics to Innsbruck (who had the Olympics 12 years earlier).

Really dissappointing considering it was the Nation’s 200th birthday and our 100th. The fact that Whistler has it this year opens the door very slightly that we could get it again, but I doubt it. I don’t think the people in our city would want the burden with comes with hosting the games. :(

That nordic combined race was intense!

I’m pretty sure I was trying to propel the US guy along by way of my vociferous cheering. I was momentarily disappointed when the French guy passed him up at the very end, but then realized it was amazing that he even got a silver, considering that was the first ever US medal in nordic combined. I’m eagerly looking forward to the team event.

If you like the nordic

watch the sprints on Wednesday. The US has medal favorites for both men and women. Colorado local Simi Hamilton has an outside shot, while Andy Newell and Kikkan Randall both have World Cup podiums recently. The US hasn’t won an Olympic medal in XC in quite a while.

I think

That more important than skill level (the skill level in the NHL is as high as it gets) is tension level. Hockey lends itself well to high tension, and nailbiting big games in hockey are incredibly entertaining. So an Olympic USA-Canada hockey game is about as good as it gets outside a game 7 late in the NHL playoffs (and if it had been an elimination game rather than round robin, it probably would have been better.)

by controlled_slide on Feb 21, 2010 10:18 PM MST up reply actions

What I loved about that game though was speed of it

I agree with what you are saying about hockey and tension, but I think that having 30 NHL teams spreads the talent too thin to get many games like that.

Honestly

I think contraction would be fine as long as they dropped at least two teams. Go with 14 team conferences and two divisions per conference. and see how it goes. If 2 isn’t enough, then I think 6 would make the most sense after that just for the sake of pretty numbers and even balance but finding 6 teams to drop would be real tough.

Watched a bit this weekend

For the first time. It was strangely addicting because I had absolutely no idea what the scoring system was, and the strategy didn’t make any sense! Really weird experience, hahaha

Caution: Colorado teams are better than they appear.

by ShadowPenguin on Feb 22, 2010 1:10 PM MST up reply actions

The scoring is easy

The team with the rock closest to the center scores points. The number of rocks that team has closer to the center and in the home 12-foot circle than their opponent’s closest rock is the number of points scored in the end

"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein

by Andrew T. Fisher on Feb 22, 2010 9:26 PM MST up reply actions

Oh, that's simple

Then the strategy is weird. The end I watched, they spent the whole time throwing their rocks into the middle, then the other team would knock them out of the way. It seemed like no one was even going for the target circle.

Caution: Colorado teams are better than they appear.

by ShadowPenguin on Feb 23, 2010 4:17 PM MST up reply actions

I can't pretend to understand all the strategy either

But the main thing is, depending on the score, sometimes a team will want/need a high score (3+) to make it worth giving up the hammer. So often times if an end doesn’t start well, they tend to play defensively and make sure the other team doesn’t score, so they can get the big end the next end

"I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious." - Albert Einstein

by Andrew T. Fisher on Feb 23, 2010 10:53 PM MST up reply actions

I think it's because of the strategy

It like watching a game of chess except it moves much faster.

I predicted he would be DQed as soon as he crossed the finish line

The Canadian may have “flopped,” but it’s too hard to judge that, but you put your hand on another skater’s hip, and you run that risk. I’m sure it’s harder to abstain from that than it would seem in the middle of the race, but I definitely would have DQed him if I were a judge.

by Andrew T. Fisher on Feb 26, 2010 9:56 PM MST up reply actions

The Canadian and Korean didn't force Ohno to put his hand on the guy's hip

Going that speed around a turn on ice, I wouldn’t be surprised if that were enough force to make the Canadian slip. The bigger point here though, is that the judges have DQed skaters for far less than what Ohno did. It’s like complaining about a called third strike call when the ump has been calling it outside all day, imo.

Well, simply putting your hand on someone is not against the rules.

But because the other guy fell, they have to try to judge causation. It wasn’t an obvious push or trip, like we’ve seen sometimes, so it really was a judgment call. Apolo knows with how much pressure he was touching the other guy, which is hard to tell from just watching. But even then, who knows.

by holly96 on Feb 27, 2010 12:35 AM MST up reply actions

From where we were sitting,

it looked like the Canadian flopped after Apolo put his hand on him. However, it also looked like an illegal move by Apolo because he “impeded” the Canadians natural line. After being behind most of the race, he had to do something to get on the podium.

I don't know too much about hockey

But it seems that the US has outplayed Canada for about the last 30 minutes of game time.

USA lost :( I watched the entire game, and I’m not a big hockey fan. That was one heck of a game.

Well, it was a great run

and an exhilarating gold medal game. The US wasn’t expected to even medal, so a silver is nothing to sneeze at. A gold would have been all that much sweeter, but at least the US gave Canada everything they could handle today.

Go Canada!

A record number of Winter golds for the poor relation. Such an exciting game! Honestly, I can’t explain what a big deal it is for British people to be making social plans to watch an ICE HOCKEY GAME.

Question

Who had the more successful Olymics? The U.S. who won the most medels of Canada who won the most golds?

I would say the at the US over-achieved

so they had a successful Olympics. Not only did they win the most, they won more than anyone ever has! I’m not sure you can say who was most successful. Canada looked good on TV and fielded a very competitive team, they had a great games as host (assuming the $$ weren’t too insane; haven’t seen much about that) Both Gemany and Finland had very strong showings as well.

I suspect that Russia is pretty disappointed (but I won’t be surprised to see them KILL in 2014), and I heard the Swedes and Swiss were surprised they didn’t do better.

See you in Sochi!

Seriously?

Canada. Golds trump anything else, otherwise what would be the point of winning? And they set the record!

And even if you disagree with this, consider the fact that they have 10% of the population of the US.

by biondino on Mar 3, 2010 10:31 AM MST up reply actions

It was the record number of golds for a host, anyway...

I’m not sure about overall. I discount the population disparity between US and Canada for the reason that Canada actually cares about all of those winter sports and has a higher capitalization rate of winter sports talent. In other words, many more Olympic-caliber athletes in Canada are focused on winter sports than US athletes.

Considering that the US was actually drawing from the small percentage of its population that pay attention to winter sports/live in a colder climate, I’m extremely impressed with their performance.

USA all the way, baby.

I said Canada had a great olympics.

I just don’t buy that Gold medals are the only measure of excelence; there’s a reason why they give medals to the 2nd and 3rd place finishers.

My point is more that a country’s olympic success isn’t best measured by a counting stat, you need to measure results against expectations. It’s hard to see the bolded “a” in my first sentance, but I was trying to say that I thought the US was successful (without saying it was the most successful).

China has 3x the population of the US, but you wouldn’t expect them to triple our medals regularly…

The US was successful, no doubt about it. But Canada was more successful in every context that matters.

I’m beginning to wonder if all the advice and opinion I get about the Rockies on this site is similarly homer-biased!

“There’s a reason why they give medals to the 2nd pla.. oh, hang on”

I think I’ve over-egged this pudding, but come on. Who on earth believes that coming second is anything like winning?

No...

but in 2007, I told myself the the NL pennant was all that really mattered! ;-)

FWIW the IOC agrees with you.

They officially issue a medals table that is sorted in order of Golds won, with Silvers as first tie breaker, then Bronzes, then alphabetical.

I've had this argument too many times in other places.

But my preference would be some sort of weighted system. Yeah, in any other sport no one cares who came in second. But the Olympics are just different to me. I can’t put it into words very well, but it just is. If the choice is between sorting simply by Gold medals or sorting by total, I prefer total. Ideally I would like a weighted system, but no one seems to bother.
